ICT Technology in Education

ICT is an acronym that stands for information and communication technology. It is consists of three
words:
Information refers to the knowledge obtained from reading, investigation, study or research.
We need information to make decisions and help us fulfill our daily tasks.
Communication is an act of transmitting messages. It is a process whereby information is
exchanged between individuals using symbols, signs, or verbal interaction.
Technology is the use of scientific knowledge, experience and resources to create processes
and products that fulfill human needs.
ICTs are defined, for the purposes of this primer, as a diverse set of technological tools and
resources used to communicate, and to create, disseminate, store, and manage information. These technologies
include computers, the Internet, and broadcasting technologies (radio and television).

A Brief History of Technology in Education

1890 School Slate Writing slate is a thin piece of flat
material used as a medium for writing. Used
throughout the 19th Century in nearly all classrooms.
Chalkboard Chalkboard is one of the biggest
inventions in terms of educational technology
1900 Pencils Pencils eventually replaced the school slate.
1905 Stereoscopes Stereoscopes is a 3D viewing glasses
that are used to illustrate points made during lectures.
1925 Radio Radio was used to send lessons to schools
through a radio station.
Film Projector Film projector projected images
on a screen for students to view.
1930 Overhead Projector schools began using overhead
projectors to display instructions, projects, and activities
for pupils.
1940 Ballpoint Pen It was used worldwide in classrooms
in 1940.
Mimeograph Mimeograph is a low-cost printing press
that works by forcing ink through a stencil onto paper.
1950 Headphones It was used for repeated drills and
repetition. Mostly used in English laboratory.
1951 Videotapes The students were able to learn by watching
films and documentaries in their classrooms.
1958 Television By the early sixties there were channels
of TV which included educational programming.

1970 Hand-Held Calculator - The hand-held pocket calculator

was invented at Texas Instruments, Inc. It was used
to calculate basic math equations.
1980 PLATO Computer PLATO (Programmed Logic for
Automatic Teaching Operations) was the first
generalized computer assisted instruction system.
1985 CD-ROM and CD-ROM Drive CD-ROM is a storing
device that could store an entire encyclopedia. CD-ROM Drive
is the op tical drive is the device used to read them.
1990 Multimedia PC the MPC is any computer with
CD-ROM drive and that is capable of running programs
that combine video, animation, audio, and graphics.
1995 Internet and World Wide Web WWW is an information system
on the Internet that allows documents to be connected to other
documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for
information by moving from one document to another.
1998 USB Flash Drive This made storing and transferring
information easier than floppy disc or CDs.
1999 Interactive Whiteboards This device was created using
touch-detecting white screen, a projector and a computer.
2015 iClicker iClicker allowed teachers to be able to poll students
and obtain their results instantly.
2010 Ipad/Tablet Computers schools and students gained access
to interactive apps, eBooks, and other technology tools.

In recent years there has been a groundswell of interest in how computers and the Internet can best
be harness to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of education at all levels and in both formal and nonformal settings. But ICTs are more than just these technologies; older technologies such as the telephone, radio
and television, although now given less attention, have a longer and richer history as instructional tools. For
instance, radio and television have for over forty years been used for open and distance learning, although print
remains the cheapest, most accessible and therefore most dominant delivery mechanism in both developed and
developing countries. The use of computers and the Internet is still in its infancy in developing countries, if
these are used at all, due to limited infrastructure and the attendant high costs of access.

ICT has a great impact on education as well as other aspects. ICT in education has both positive as
well as negative impact on students and teachers.

Shift from:
Knowledge transmitter

Changes in Teachers Role

To:
Learning Facilitator, collaborator, coach

Primary source of information

Knowledge navigator and co learner

Teacher controlling and directing all aspects of

learning

Teacher giving students more options and

responsibilities for their own learning

Passive recipient of information

Reproducing knowledge

Change in Students Role

Active participant in the learning process

Producing knowledge

Learning as a solitary activity

Learning Collaboratively with others

Advantages of ICT in Education

Special facilities for pupils with disabilities.

It enables distance learning

Easier planning and preparation of lessons and designing materials

Access to up-to-date pupil and school data, anytime and anywhere

Can repeat work again and again.

It can promote change and foster the development of the 21st century skills.

Through ICT, images can easily be used in teaching and improving the retentive memory of students.

Through ICT, teachers can easily explain complex instructions and ensure students' comprehension.

Through ICT, teachers are able to create interactive classes and make the lessons more enjoyable, which
could improve student attendance and concentration.

ICT enables pupils to gather data that would otherwise be difficult, time-consuming or even impossible to
obtain.

Disadvantages of ICT in Education

Needs electricity.

Hard for teachers to use with a lack of experience using ICT tools

It is very expensive.

Excess use of ICT harmful for health.

Eye sights become weak of the learners.

Students going out of content; download absurdity and silly songs, pictures, dialogues and videos.

Conclusion
The integration of ICT in education is a good way to attract the interest of young
students. With all kinds of tools, we are able to control what children are doing but we
must keep a constant watch for it does not use their technological tool inappropriately
during school hours. As every good thing has a bad thing, in the same way ICT also has
both positive as well as negative impact on education. But the use lies in our hands
whether to use ICT in a useful manner or have its negative impacts on our life.
