1. Application of Rational Equations

Working together, Anya and Bill stained a large porch deck in 8 hours. Last year, Anya
stained the deck by herself. The year before, Bill painted it by himself, but took twice as
long as Anya did. How long did Anya and Bill take, when each was painting the deck
alone?
Given:
A= number of hours for Anya to paint a deck.
Anya: A hours -> 1 decks
deck
A hour
B = number of hours for Bill to paint a deck = 2A
Bill: B hours -> 1 deck
Deck
B hours
Anya + Bill: 8 hours -> 1 deck
Deck
8 hours
= 1 deck + 1 deck
A hour B hour
=1=1=1
8 A B
=1=1+1
8 A 2A
(8A) 1 = ( 1 + 1 ) (8A)
8
A 2A
A=8+4
= 12
Therefore, the number of hours it takes for Anya to paint a deck is 12.
B=2xA
= (2) (12)
=24
Therefore, the number of hours it takes for Bill to paint a deck is 24. When they do it
combined, it takes 8 hours which makes sense because if Bill took 12 hours by himself,
combined they would take 6 hours; they would take half as long, but Bill isnt that
efficient. Hes not as efficient as Anya, so it takes them a little bit longer. It makes sense
when combined because they will take less time taken individually.

2. Piecewise Function

In 2008, long distance calls cost $1.40 for up to two minutes and $0.15 for each
additional minute, up to 20 minutes. Write and graph a piecewise function to represent
this situation.
f(x)=

1.40
1.40 + 0.15 (x-2)

f(0) = 1.40
f(2) = 1.40
f(20) = 1.40 + 0.15 (20-2)
= 1.40 + 0.15 (18)
= 1.40 + 2.70
f(20) = 4.10

if 0 < x < 2
if 2 < x < 20
(0, 1.40)
(2, 1.40)

(20, 4.10)

cost
(0,1.40) (2,1.40) (20,4.10)

Rational Functions

Annie can do a job in 4 days and her assistant, Andrew can do the same job in 16
days. How long will it take for Andrew and Annie to complete the job, if they work
together?

Given:
Part of the job Annie can do in 1 day = 1 / 4
Part of the job Andrew can do in 1 day = 1 / 16
Let t be the time taken by Annie and Andrew to complete the job.
[(Part of the job Annie can do in a day) (Time taken by Annie)] + [(Part of the job
Andrew can do in a day) (Time taken by Andrew)] = 1
1 t + 1t=1
4
16
[16 (1 )t] + [16 (1 )t] = 1 (16)
4
16
4t + t = 16
5t = 16
5
5
t = 16 / 5
= 31 / 5
The time taken by Annie and Andrew to complete the job together is 31 / 5 days.

4. Quadratic Function
An object in launched directly upward at 64 feet per second (ft/s) from a platform 80 feet
high. What will be the object's maximum height? When will it attain this height?
Given:
Initial height = 80 ft
Initial speed = 64 ft/s
Number for gravity = 16
Maximum height = ?

Equation: s(t) = 16t2 + 64t + 80

Vertex:
h = b/2a
= (64)/2(16)
= 64/32
=2
k = s(2)
= 16(2)2 + 64(2) + 80
= 16(4) + 128 + 80
= 208 64
= 144
Vertex: (2, 144)
Therefore, It takes two seconds to reach the maximum height of 144 feet.

5. Composition of Functions
Your computer's screen saver is an expanding circle. The circle starts as a dot in the
middle of the screen and expands outward, changing colors as it grows. With a twentyone inch screen, you have a viewing area with a 10-inch radius (measured from the center
diagonally down to a corner). The circle reaches the corners in four seconds. Express the
area of the circle (discounting the area cut off by the edges of the viewing area) as a
function of time t in seconds.
Since the circle's leading edge covers ten inches in four seconds, the radius is
growing at a rate of (10 inches)/(4 seconds) = 2.5 inches per second. Then the
equation of the radius r, as a function of time t, is:
r(t) = 2.5t
The formula for the area A of a circle, as a function of the radius r, is given by:

A (r) = r2
Then the area, as a function of time, is found by plugging the radius equation
into the area equation, and simplifying the composition:
A (t) = (A o r)(t) =A (r(t))
= A (2.5t)
= (2.5t)2
= (6.25t2)
= 6.25 t2
Then the function they're looking for is: A (t) = 6.25 t2
