Product Overview
The DR-6080 (black & white) and the DR-9080C (black & white and color) are
two new versatile document image scanners that, when connected to a personal
computer with Microsoft Windows based application software,1 scans and files
both sides of documents at high speed. Both models capture documents in black
and white and Grayscale mode, however the DR-9080C is also capable of
capturing documents in 24-bit color.
As an Energy Star Partner, Canon U.S.A., Inc. has determined that this product
meets the Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency.
Design Features
A.
High Speed Scanning
When scanning documents in Simplex Mode (scanning one side of the
document only) a ppm (pages per minute) designation is given to indicate
the speed specification of the scanner in terms of pages scanned. When
scanning in Duplex Mode (scanning both sides of the document) an ipm
(images per minute) designation is given to indicate the speed
specification of the scanner in terms of images scanned. The number of
pages scanned remains the same in both simplex and duplex modes.

Front Operation
To facilitate intensive operation, most operations can be managed from
the control panel located on the front of either unit.
Image Compression
JPEG
Image Sensor
The CMOS CIS (Contact Image Sensor) allows simultaneous front and
back (Duplex) capture of document images.
Image Rotate
The scanner recogizes the direction of charactures and rotates the image
to the correct document direction automatically.
Double Feed Detection
Documents double fed into the scanner can be detected by thickness and
length.
Easy Maintenance
The Feed Rollers (Pick-up, Feed, and Retard Rollers) are end-user
replaceable items.
Staple Detection
The staple detector senses the lift-up mode when stapled documents are
fed into the scanner and will automatically stop the scanner.
Utility Software
CapturePerfect 2.0 is high-performance utility software that includes the
following new software functions:

Documents can be saved as a searchable PDF through OCR

processing

Scan batch mail for easy transmission by e-mail

Imprinter (Option)
The Imprinter prints a variety of text messages on the front of each
scanned document using an inkjet cartridge.
Endorser ED600 (Option)
The Endorser ED600 endorses bank checks and other documents by
printing up to 8-digit numbers on the back of the scanned document. The
ED600 option is available for both models. However, when the ED600 is
installed on the DR-9080C then the maximum scanning speed becomes
approximately 85 ppm or 170 ipm when scanning in duplex mode.
Hard Counter (Option)
The Hard Counter counts the number of pages scanned through the
scanner.
Barcode Module (Option)
The Barcode Module is an optional module that enables the
ISIS/TWAIN driver to recognize barcodes.

Service Features
A.
Installation
The DR-6080 and DR-9080C are both designed for customer (end-user)
installation. No technician is required to install the main unit.
B.

Serviceability
Although the customer can install the main unit, a trained technician must
install the accessories. Since service modes are preinstalled, there are no
service mode tools on a floppy disk as with previous models. The service
mode contains a total counter however; a technician can reset it. The
roller system is designed for ease of service.

Service Policy
A.
Authorized Servicer
1. Current Authorized Servicer
Service Dealers or Resellers with a current Authorized Servicer
Agreement who successfully complete the Service Training for the
DR-6080/9080C will receive a new Schedule A to be included with their
Authorized Servicer Agreement.
2. New Authorized Servicer
Service Dealers who are not authorized under the DR Scanner
Sales Agreement in conjunction with a DR Scanner Servicer
Agreement should contact their respective District Account
Executive. A Sales Agreement is required before an Authorized
Servicer Agreement can be entered into. This option is not
available to resellers.
B.

Authorized Servicer Technical Support

The following support mechanisms have been established to deliver high
quality, timely technical support services, and product information to
DR-6080/9080C Authorized Servicers. These support services cover
areas such as system and user software, networking and connectivity
issues, electro-mechanical operations, and other hardware servicing.
1. Canon USA/Authorized Servicer
In order to ensure that each Authorized Servicer receives the highest
level of support, and in turn can resolve the end-customers problems
quickly and accurately, here are several recommendations for
maximizing your technical support request.

Authorized Servicer Support personnel should check technical

documentation (Manuals, Tech. Pubs, etc.) and the e-Support
website (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) before calling Canon USAs
Technical Support Center since your concern may have already
been addressed and documented.

Have your Support ID Number ready when you call the Technical
Support Center and prepare to be at the location where the scanner
is accessible. This dramatically improves the Technical Support
Centers ability to help troubleshoot the problem and eliminates any
of the guesswork when answering a specific question. There are
many causes to various problems, but by being at the location
when calling, it takes the speculation out of the troubleshooting
process by supplying accurate answers to what the machine /
application is doing.

DR-6080/9080C Service Guide

Rev. 0

November 2003 Page 9

DR-6080/9080C Service Guide

Provide the serial number of the installed scanner you are

troubleshooting. While this is required for access to support, it will
also provide the Specialist with information about previous calls for
support.

Be prepared to provide environment specific information and any

other site-specific variables.

Submit and update your profile information such as cell phone

number, e-mail address or company address. To do so, you can
logon to e-Support and access the Current Profile section to make
updates or call Canon USAs Technical Support Center. Accurate
profile information will allow for quick contact if more information is
required from the caller later on.

At the completion of each call, a ticket number is provided. If the

Support Specialist does not provide a number, the caller should ask
for the ticket number.

A return call from a Authorized Servicer Technician with a resolution

is extremely helpful. The information Canon USA receives from you
on what actually resolved the problem is sent to the Support
Specialist and enables them to better assist other callers who might
have the same problem you just fixed.

Making certain that all of our support partners get the highest quality
technical support as fast as possible makes everyone more
productive and ultimately delivers better results and customer
satisfaction.

Following some of these basic guidelines, and working as a team,

helps everyone achieve their support goals.
