5E Lesson Plan

Teacher: Megan Moore

Date lesson will be presented: This lesson plan with span 8/30-9/2 (Tuesday
after quiz-Friday)
Subject area and grade level: 7th Grade Science
Materials:
Poster board, computer, magazines, scissors, glue, markers, rubric, copies of
the instructions.
TEKS:
(A) plan and implement comparative and descriptive investigations by making
observations, asking well-defined questions, and using appropriate equipment and
technology;
(B) design and implement experimental investigations by making observations, asking
well-defined questions, formulating testable hypotheses, and using appropriate
equipment and technology;
Learning Target(s)
I can understand the process of scientific experimentation
I can apply my knowledge of scientific experimentation
I design an experiment

ENGAGEMENT: (Tuesday)
Students will be asked, What is your favorite type of gum? After students take a few
moments to share their preferred brands of gum, they will be asked, WHY is this your
favorite type of gum? What makes this gum better than the other brands that you
have tried? Some may say that Juicy Fruit disintegrates after about an hour. Some
may say that Extra loses its flavor too quickly. After discussing the why questions
with their tables, the teacher will write some of these reasons/brands on the board.
At the end of the experimental design lesson, we will start photosynthesis, and
students will color a comic about photosynthesis and place it in their interactive
notebooks (Friday after gallery walk)
EXPLORATION: (Tuesday & Wednesday)
Students will be given 3 different types of paper towel brands and will explore the
absorbency of the three paper towels at their table groups. After 10 minutes, table
groups will share which paper towels that they had that seemed more absorbent.
EXPLANATION: (Tuesday/Wednesday)
Together, we will discuss the terms related to scientific experimentation (IV, DV,
control, hypothesis, constants, and procedures). As a class, we will relate their paper
towel investigation to how this could be a great way to test the claim that This paper
towel is the more absorbent paper towel ever.
After discussing the terminology and having the students provide examples of the

terms, I will ask them, Based on our discussion, think about How you could test which
paper towel brand is the best? What would be the IV, DV, constant, control(s),
procedures if you were to test this claim?
ELABORATION: (Wednesday and Thursday)
Students will be asked to choose an ad from a magazine that makes a claim about a
certain product. This could be about makeup, candy, trucks, etc.,. (as long as its
making a claim that could be tested). Students will design an experiment that could
test the claim stated in the ad. Students must include the following things in their
experimental design (IV, DV, controls, constants, hypothesis, procedures). Students will
make a poster with each of these components included in it.
EVALUATION: (Friday)
Students will complete a gallery walk of their experimental design on a poster.
Students will provide 1 positive comment, and one critique of every students design.
