HOW INTERNET GOVERNANCE CAN SUPPORT INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE

GROWTH

The Internet has developed due to its openness, inclusiveness and transparency and this growth is
very eminent and progressing much faster in the developing world. It has become one of the
most important tools for developing policies in Education, Health, Social, and among other
things Agricultural matters in developing and the least developing countries. Consequently, it is
crucial for development and notwithstanding its governance is very much required for supporting
inclusion and growth sustainability.

Internet Governance (IG) as agreed to be defined by Tunis heads of state is the development and
application by governments, the private sector and civil society, in their respective roles of
shared principles, norms, rules, decision-making procedures and programs that shape the
evolution and use of the Internet.

Through IG proper policies and decisions can be put in place by governments to remove all
barriers to the use and/or access of the Internet; in view of this, there should be an increased
participation and involvement of national and regional governments at relevant global, regional
and national fora.

The IG should be open, transparent, secure, and protect sensitive data to boost confidence of
citizens and should also support the creation and sustenance of relevant local content, setup
national/regional data centers that can host national/regional applications and services.

The IG should encourage the inclusion of all by identifying the right people that will help
maintain the ethos and values of what the Internet means and will ensure that development of the
internet does not become regressive by what they do.

By developing outreach programs whereby participants of international IGF will act as

ambassadors to publicize the outcome messages to benefit national IGFs.

By ensuring that IG offers platforms that are sensitive to developing and the least developing
countrys needs, that also set to dialog on internet related issues such as Accessibility,
Affordability, Security, Critical Internet resources and so on.

Actively and effectively including governments, regulators, academia and research, industry
(ISPs, MNOs, etc), civil-society, regional internet registries, etc., to help fight and/or reduce the
threats of cybersecurity on the internet platform and ecosystem.

IG has somewhat supported inclusion and helped sustained growth through its various multistakeholder fora organized globally, regionally and nationally but should coordinate actively
with governments and other major stakeholders to make and implement policies that positively
affect several aspects of life and civil, social and the economy.

Good IG is therefore required to ensure active inclusion of the right people that will support the
development of sustainable ICTs for socio-economic growth globally particularly in developing
and least developing world.
