painting that tells loads of stories about gender. During the
exhibition, Made Bayak (MB) took ve minutes to chat with

BB: Could you share a bit about your project Merayakan
Murni?
MB: Ive tried to respond to the gender issue that Murni had
been focusing on, especially about women. I decided to
collaborate with my wife and son to make a wide, detailed,
and colorful painting of Rangda and his students that is
inspired by Cok Sawitris novel titled Janda dari Jirah.
In the novel Rangda is depicted as a wise mentor with
male followers that act female and vice versa. But Rangda
emphasizes that it does not matter as long as they respect
people and give back to their surroundings. This philosophy
is also related to my sons behavior. Because of his long
straight black hair, he is often miscalled as gek, a Balinese
word for Ms. Thats why in this painting project I wanted to
blend Murnis ideology, Janda dari Jirahs philosophy, and my
opinion about gender.

installations are made part of the ritual. I always look forward
to seeing the art because they often tell stories about life
after death and I am always mesmerized by the artists
imagination.

Celebrating Niluh the Orangutans 8th birthday in conjunction with

National Childrens Day, Bali Safari & Marine Park invited 55
children from the Al Ittihad Rasyid Wa Habib Orphanage on July
23. Niluh was a wonderful host, showing her remarkable skills as
she welcomed the children to the park. The childrens adventure
continued with the Safari Journey before they watched the elephant
and tiger show as well as the Bali Agung Show and played at the
parks Fun Zone.

INSPIRING JOURNEY
On August 8, a number of young Indonesian professionals
traveled to Nusa Penida to share their knowledge and
experience with underprivileged children on the island.
They were volunteers for a program named Kelas Inspirasi,
which aims to inspire children and help them to reach their
dreams. Kelas Inspirasi is a program created by Indonesia
Mengajar that is focused on giving education in rural areas
of the archipelago.

Yanies Restaurant presents Taste of Bali, a dining experience

performance by the Gita Mahardika Dance Troop. First debuting
on July 28, this special dinner will be held every Thursday. The
pilot event served a Balinese dinner crafted by the restaurants
chef Ida Ayu Pratiwisari Pidada and was opened with a speech
by Bali Adventure Tours founder Nigel Mason. Located at Ubud
Adventure Centre in Kedewatan, this restaurant aims to excite

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot

more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most
hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali
Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms,
but not gastro-related infections. A fever along
with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed
antibiotics.
Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic
drinks under various brand names are widely
available and are known to replenish body
hydration and replace uids. For discomfort,
diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea;
avoid fruits and spicy foods.
Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.
Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not
required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions
easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them
immediately.
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit
before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at
reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.
Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.
Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.
AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases
are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers
have multiple partners from around the world.
They are not checked for sexually transmitted
diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms,
available over the counter at pharmacies.
