All Eyes on Asia Pacific

any of our readers will be attending the Asia Pacific Coatings

Show September 3-5 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Professionals involved with the paint and coatings industry will tell you this
region is one of the most important growth areas for our industry. From
automobile production to shipbuilding, the Asia Pacific region is a huge
consumer of paints and coatings.

Asia Pacific Report

Contributing editor Dan Watson takes an in-depth look at this diverse and
dynamic region for our annual Asia Pacific Report (page 32). According to
Watsons research, the Asia Pacific region is home to approximately 62 percent of the total global population (4.4 billion). China and India account
for more than half of this regions total population. India is projected to
pass China in population size in 15 years, becoming the worlds most populous country with approximately 1.5 billion people.
The Asia Pacific region represents the single largest growth opportunity
for the paint and coatings industry. In 2001 the region represented 27 percent of the global coating market compared to 33 percent for the Americas
and 36 percent for Europe. In 2010 the region represented 40 percent
of the coatings market while the Americas share declined to 26 percent
and Europe declined to 28 percent. This trend is expected to continue.
According to the article, depending on how you define the composition of
the region, the total Asia Pacific region coating market is estimated to be
valued at more than $62 billion with an annual growth rate estimated at
12-15 percent.

Marine Coatings
My article on the Marine Coatings Market (page 28) examines the latest
trends in this diverse market, which comprises not only antifoulings for
ships, but protective coatings for offshore structures such as oil rigs and
more. Geographic speaking the vast majority of demand for marine coatings is in the Asia Pacific region. Christian Ottosen, group marine marketing director for Hempel estimates that ninety percent of new building for
ships takes in Asia. China and Korea have the highest market share, followed by Japan, Ottosen added.

AkzoNobel to Invest in New Performance

Coatings Technology Center in China

AkzoNobel is investing more than 6.5 million in its Songjiang site near Shanghai to
expand an existing research center by adding a dedicated facility for the companys
Performance Coatings businesses. Once completed in June 2015, the new development
and application center will add capability and
capacity to serve growing demand throughout Asia for innovative solutions targeted
at the packaging, coil, specialty finishes and
powder coatings markets. The extension will
also double the number of people working in
R&D at Songjiang (to around 200) over the
next couple of years. When fully operational, the new laboratory will be Performance
Coatings second largest research and development base after Felling in the UK.Boosting
our R&D capabilities in Asia means we can
accelerate the development and formulation
of new products tailor-made for the Asian
market, said Conrad Keijzer, AkzoNobels
Executive Committee member responsible for
Performance Coatings. The expanded R&D
center will therefore play a crucial role in supporting our growth ambitions for China in
particular and will provide us with a major
innovation facility located close to our customers in the region. RD&I Director for
Performance Coatings, Klaas Kruithof, added
that the new center will also drive efficiency
by further consolidating the companys R&D
footprint. Expanding the existing facility will
enable ongoing research and development activities for powder coatings to be transferred
from Ningbo, he explained. It will also be
capable of accommodating R&D activities
for Decorative Paints and the companys
Surface Chemistry business. Strategically
positioned in the greater Shanghai area, the
Songjiang site was recently expanded to create one of AkzoNobels biggest resin plants
for performance coatings in the world. In
total, around 300 people are currently employed at the location. With operations spread
across the country, AkzoNobel employs more
than 7,400 people in China, including 500 in
R&D. In 2013, the company generated revenues in China of 1.6 billion, the majority
coming from local demand. CW

Boosting our R&D capabilities in Asia means we

can accelerate the development and formulation of
new products tailor-made for the Asian market.

Axalta and Yongjia Increase

Coating Offerings in China

Axalta Coating Systems is stepping up

its efforts to expand its product offerings in China. Manufacturing capacity
for new modified polypropylene powder
products will be added to the Huangshan
operations center of Axaltas powder
coatings joint venture - Huajia Chemical
Co. Ltd. This new high performance thermoplastics powder coating will meet the
increased domestic demands for thermoplastic coatings in China. Huajia is a
joint venture that Axalta Coating Systems
shares with of Yongjia Chemical Co. Ltd.
The new modified polypropylene
powder coatings have significantly
higher corrosion resistance than can be
achieved with other powder coatings.
Due to increasing demand for this exceptionally durable coating, Axalta and
Yongjia have made the decision to develop manufacturing capacity in China in
order to meet the growing demand from
local customers. By adding capability for
cryogenic milling to the Huangshan factory, Axalta and Yongjia will make this
important commitment to customers in
China which can significantly shorten
the lead time previously required to supply domestic customers.
The modified polypropylene powder
coating manufactured in the Huangshan
facility will be applied on the shelves of
dishwashers, go-carts, flange, furniture,
buttons and other surfaces requiring a
high hardness coating.
In addition, Axalta supplies its Abcite
thermoplastics coatings in China in conjunction with its Huajia joint venture
company. Abcite thermoplastic coatings
have excellent resistance to moisture and
chipping and can be used for outdoor
furniture, light poles, sign posts, railings and stairways, fencing panels, bike
racks, cable grids, battery trays and perforated steel. All of these attributes are
available in a sustainable powder coating technology with virtually no VOC
emissions. Abcite is manufactured in
Bulle, Switzerland and marketed and sold

successfully throughout the world.

In China, Axaltas powder coatings
are used in a variety of end-user applications, including customers in the automotive, oil and gas pipeline, transportation,
architectural, information technology,
furniture, and general industrial sectors.
In addition, Axaltas powder coatings
feature environmentally sustainable technology and have earned a reputation for
corrosion resistance and durability due to
superior edge coverage, thick film build,
and primer-less systems.
In China, in addition to a manufacturing facility in Huangshan, Axalta and
Yongjia operate powder coating manufacturing plants under the Huajia name
that are strategically located in Qingpu
(Shanghai), Guangdong, Chengdu, and
Shandong. Axalta and Yongjia recently
announced a significant capital expansion to double the capacity of its
Qingpu manufacturing facility to serve
the needs of customers in Shanghai and
eastern China.
Also in China, Axalta Coating Systems
operates liquid coating manufacturing facilities in Changchun and is completing
a significant expansion of its waterborne
coating production facility in Jiading.

Flowcrete Americas
Expands to Support
Business Growth
Flowcrete Americas has moved its center of operations to a new facility to
meet a rise in demand for its specialist polymer floor systems across the
U.S., Canada, Latin America and the
Caribbean. The 30,000 square foot facility, located in Spring, Texas, will allow
the flooring manufacturer to more than
double its production capacity from 10
million pounds per year to over 20 million pounds. This development has been
designed to not only significantly boost
the companys manufacturing output
but also to enable Flowcrete Americas to
build upon its reputation for high levels
of customer satisfaction by ensuring a superior response capacity despite a sharp
rise in demand and workload.
Officially set to open in September,
the new facility will include a long list of
advantages over the flooring specialists
previous site. The total area of the building is almost double that of the old one,
allowing for significantly larger production, office, warehouse and laboratory areas as well as 6 more loading docks and
double the number of both packaging
and liquid mixer stations. The plant has
been constructed with the principles of

Results of U.S. Architectural Coatings Industry Research Report Which Compared Business Trends
in 2Q14 vs. 2Q13
Each month, Northcoast Research surveys a large sample of paint retailers throughout the United States to get a sense for current
business trends. Please note that of the three primary architectural coatings channels (paint stores, home centers, and retail distributors), this survey is primarily reflective of the distributor channel which tends to see volume growth less than the industry; therefore,
the company views the results as a directional indicator more so than absolute industry volumes. For inquiries regarding this report
please contact Kevin Hocevar at 216-468-6924 or kevin.hocevar@northcoastresearch.com.
Architectural Coatings Sales Volumes Up 2.6% in 2Q14 vs. 2Q13
According to industry participants, average sales volumes accelerated 2.6% thus far in 2Q14 compared to 2Q13 as weather conditions improved across the country and Ace Hardware volumes accelerated due to positive feedback from the Valspar roll-out. This
compares to volume growth of 1.8% in 1Q14 where our contacts experienced modest general growth which was partially offset by
harsh winter conditions. The 2.6% volume increase in 2Q14 represents the strongest growth we have seen since the inception of our
survey so we view the pick-up in year-over-year paint volumes as an encouraging data point for the architectural coatings industry.
Overall, 69% of respondents witnessed an increase in volumes vs. only 19% that saw volumes decline, which averaged out to 2.6%
volume growth with a net increase of 50%.
Price of Paint from Suppliers 2Q14 Paint Prices Up Slightly vs. 2Q13
53% of contacts noted a year-over-year increase in the cost of a gallon of paint from suppliers in 2Q14 as our paint price index increased 1%. This compares to year-over-year increases in our index in the range of 1.5%-2.0% throughout 2013 and is largely in-line
with our paint price index of 0.8% in 1Q14. Price increases were announced in the paint store channel in 1Q14; however, this survey
is reflective of the retail distributor channel and given that the times when coatings manufacturers were trying to recover rising raw
materials costs have anniversaried, we believe the year-over-year increases in price are becoming less pronounced. Overall, 53%
of respondents witnessed an increase in pricing vs. only 11% that saw pricing decline, which averaged out to a 1% increase in price
with a net increase of 42%.
Raw Materials TiO2 Remains Largely Benign
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) prices have been stabilizing in recent months after witnessing sharp declines in 2013 and propylene has
come down considerably since the beginning of 2014. Overall, we anticipate raw materials to remain largely benign over the nearterm with the potential for TiO2 to increase sometime in 2H14, although no price increase announcements have been issued by
TiO2 producers to date and even then it is still skeptical due to the previous price hike attempts which were ultimately unsuccessful. As a result, we believe that the price/raw relationship from paint manufacturers will remain favorable during the near-term.
3-Month Outlook Outlook Robust Due to Great Start to the Busy Paint Season
Our proprietary Architectural Coatings Outlook Index reached 0.78 during 2Q14 which compares to a reading of 0.92 during 1Q14.
Please note that the highest possible reading is +2 (indicating all contacts have a very positive outlook) and the lowest possible
reading is -2 (indicating all contacts have a very negative outlook. Therefore, we view the 0.78 reading in 2Q14 as a positive as our
outlook index remains at elevated levels. We find this encouraging given that the busy paint season got off to a robust start once
weather improved and contacts are optimistic and believe that the upcoming months will continue to experience positive year-overyear growth. The vast majority (64%) of contacts share a positive (42%) or very positive (22%) 3-month outlook, 30% believe that
current trends will remain the same and the remaining 6% share a negative outlook.

HMG Paints Pioneering

Future Entrepreneurship
Eight students aged 14-15 from
Manchester Communication Academy
have
successfully
completed
the
first stage of their pioneering Future
Entrepreneurship Partnership at HMG

Paints Ltd. HMG Paints, the UKs largest

independent industrial paints manufacturer, invited the students to visit the site
in Collyhurst, Manchester on a weekly
basis to learn about the industry and gain
invaluable business experience. The program began in September 2013, with 100
eager Academy students applying for the
exclusive opportunity. After a rigorous,
three month selection process, the eight
outstanding entrepreneurial candidates
were chosen to take part in the scheme.
Starting in January 2013, the young entrepreneurs began working in departments across the business, learning about
sales, accountancy, marketing, formulating colours and research and development. Mentored closely by experienced
HMG employees, the students have embarked on a wide range of projects that
have included developing a range of eyecatching nail polish colours and staging, filming and editing a promotional
video. One of the eight budding entrepreneurs, Lewis Whalen, enthused about the

of the UK based Flowcrete Group Ltd,
has been a leading manufacturer of polymer floor and wall coating solutions since
it began operating in 2004. Its systems
have been designed for use in a variety of
environments including heavy industry,
large-scale commercial locations and government facilities. In addition to the companys manufacturing plant, it also has a
West Coast warehousing facility in Los
Angeles, California and sales representatives working across the U.S., Canada,
Latin America and the Caribbean.

partnership: During the project

I have really enjoyed being part
of the team here at HMG, but
have also become much more independent. The last six months have been
an incredible experience for me and without this opportunity I would not have acquired essential skills that I will be able
to draw upon throughout my working
life. In September, all eight students will
be returning to HMG Paints on a weekly
basis to complete the second phase of the
partnership. In pairs, the students will be
specialising in chosen departments of the
business and using their newly acquired
business acumen and industry knowledge
to establish exciting projects in new business areas for HMG.
John Falder, managing director
of HMG Paints and President of the
British Coatings Federation, is thrilled
with the progress made by the students:
The first stage of the partnership has
been a complete success. HMG has always supported the development of its

employees and currently has

eight apprentices working on
site. This project continues this
tradition whilst also providing
the candidates with valuable business
experience that will give them a competitive advantage in their future careers.
The partnership is a result of a long
term relationship between Manchester
Communication Academy and HMG
Paints. In October 2013, HMG supplied the school with 100 literss of
colored decorative emulsion paint for
the Harpurhey and North Manchester
Handmade Film Festival. The paint
was used by Academy staff and students to create a colorful Manchester
street scene that provided attendees
with a nostalgic trip down memory
lane. Steve Taylor, Lead Professional in
Careers and Partnerships at Manchester
Communication Academy, believes
similar pioneering partnerships could
become an established program nationwide. The project has been fantastic
for the students, as it has allowed them
to take their classroom skills into workplace scenarios and has also helped
inform their decisions about a future
career. Partnerships of this kind are in
sync with the governments educational
objectives and offer significant benefits
to businesses, schools, students, local
communities and the UK economy.

Hemmelrath Opens New

Location in Russia
Hemmelrath Lackfabrik GmbH founded the companys first Russian branch,
Hemmelrath RUS, in Nizhny Novgorod.
With the new location, Hemmelrath
opens up the Russian OEM market for
itself and lays the foundation for further expansion of its market activities in
Central and Eastern Europe.
With this strategic investment,
Hemmelrath underlines the significance
of the rapid-growth market Russia, where
the high quality automotive coatings of
the Bavarian manufacturer continue to
gain importance. The new location in
Nizhny Novgorod will initially serve to
better attend to the Russian car market,
but for the future, the coatings manufacturer is already planning to gradually increase the degree of localization and to
eventually establish its own local production facilities.
For Hemmelrath, the decision to establish a site in Russia is the logical consequence resulting from the ever-increasing
demand in Eastern Europe and the desire
to fully meet the specific requirements of
the Russian market.

UV Cured Adhesives Used to Create Art

Sidney Hutter is an artist who uses UV
cured adhesives to create beautiful glass
sculptures. Hutter has developed his
sculpting process on his own. The artists
system starts with using UVP BP100 UV
lights for spot curing. He takes two pieces
of cleaned glass and then applies the adhesives to one piece and positions the
other piece on top. After the adhesive is
spread evenly and fixed in place, he uses a
modified UVP BP100 light to cure the adhesive. After spot curing the glass he then
cures the adhesives with a Loctite 7400,

power bulb. For his pieces, Hutter uses
Dymax Light Weld GR212A, a medium

viscosity crystal clear UV curing adhesive and GR217A, a higher viscosity

UV adhesive.
Over the years, I have used machines
and materials that have been specifically
developed for my work to create sculptures, Hutton said. I use cold-working
techniques: cutting, stacking and laminating sheets of glass to create volumetric forms. My interest in technological
advancements of various formulations of
ultraviolet adhesives, dyes and pigments
lead to the incorporation of pieces with

Do Great Leaders Need Experience?

by Phil Phillips, PhD

decisions. A strong leader will evaluate the input from all interested parties and work for the
betterment of the whole.

Resourceful

s global consultants to the specialty

chemicals industry over the past 39
years, we have witnessed the results
of degrees of leadership capabilities that range
from very poor to excellent. Of course, this
range can be said of every industry at one time
or another.
According to the Holden Leadership Center,
an exceptionally effective business leader keeps
the following 17 key success elements in balance:

Utilize the resources available to you. If you

dont know the answer to something find out
by asking questions. A leader must create access
to information.

Proactive vs. Reactive

The exceptional leader is always thinking three
steps ahead. Working to master his/her own environment with the goal of avoiding problems
before they arise.

Knowledge is power. Work to be well educated

on community policies, procedures, organizational norms, etc. Further, your knowledge of
issues and information will only increase your
success in leading others.

Flexible/Adaptable

Open to Change

How do you handle yourself in unexpected or

uncomfortable situations? An effective leader
will adapt to new surroundings and situations,
doing his/her best to adjust.

A leader will take into account all points of

view and will be willing to change a policy, program, cultural tradition that is out-dated, or no
longer beneficial to the group as a whole.

A Good Communicator

Interested in Feedback

As a leader, one must listen...a lot! You must

be willing to work to understand the needs
and desires of others. A good leader asks many
questions, considers all options, and leads in the
right direction.

How do people feel about your leadership skill

set? How can you improve? These are important questions that a leader needs to constantly ask the chapter. View feedback as a gift to
improve.

Respectful

Evaluative

Treating others with respect will ultimately

earn respect.

Be sure of yourself with humble intentions.

Evaluation of events and programs is essential for an organization/group to improve and

progress. An exceptional leader will constantly
evaluate and change programs and policies that
are not working.

Enthusiastic

Organized

Excitement is contagious. When a leader is motivated and excited about the cause people will
be more inclined to follow.

Are you prepared for meetings, presentations,

without your leadership being consistent.
People must have confidence that their
opinions and thoughts will be heard and
taken into consideration.

Delegator
An exceptional leader realizes that he/
she cannot accomplish everything on his
own. A leader will know the talents and
interests of people around him/her, thus
delegating tasks accordingly.

Initiative
A leader should work to be the motivator,
an initiator. He/she must be a key element
in the planning and implementing of new
ideas, programs, policies, events, etc.
The Notre Dame School of Business
adds these attributes as keys to exceptional leadership:
Motivating teams Inspiring others is the mark of an effective
leader. Motivation is best done by
example and guidance, not by issuing commands.
Team building Putting together
strong teams that work well is another trait of great leaders. The opposite is also true: if a team is weak
and dysfunctional, it is generally a
failure in leadership.
Risk taking You can learn how to
assess risk and run scenarios that
will help you make better decisions.
Great leaders take the right risks at
the right time.
Vision and goal setting A team
depends on its leader to tell them
where they are going, why they are
going, and how theyre going to get
there. People are more motivated
when a leader articulates his or her
vision for a project or for the organization, along with the steps or
goals needed to achieve it.
In most all researched definitions of
Leadership, we found that the need for
experience in general, was missing.
Interestingly, in the October, 2012
HBR, Professor Gautam Mukunda,
Harvard Professor challenged and questions experience versus leadership success. He concludes that unfiltered

leaders (those without experience) were

both most effective and the least effective leaders, while highly filtered
(those with a great deal of experience)
were leaders that landed in the middle
of the pack.
The professor further concludes that
unfiltered leaders (little experience) can
crash and burn just as easily as becoming great and successful leaders. Steve
Jobs and Abraham Lincoln were unfiltered (relatively little experience) and
were great leaders because they could
think differently without the experience
filter getting in their way.
Mukunda says that experience many
times prevents leaders from approaching
business situations any differently than
other experienced people. Filtered leaders will usually make the basically same
decisions. They will usually become
good but not great leaders.
In comparison, Mukunda compares
Presidents Jefferson and Lincoln, concluding Lincoln was the ultimate example of the unfiltered leader while
Jefferson was a good decision-maker
but he was the prime example of a filtered leader, accomplishing what others
(Madison and Adams) could and would
have done in his place.

August 2014 www.coatingsworld.com

Lincoln was a two-time loser in

Senate races and so outside of the system
that he wasnt even listed in the top 10
Republican presidential candidates in
some newspapers in 1860. Lincoln had
the ingenuity to announce, we wont
give up Fort Sumter without a fight, thus
strategically, forcing the South to fire the
first shot and unite the North behind him.
The conclusions reached in his research, Professor Mukunda says:
Unfiltered Leaders are best when the
organizations tolerance for risk is
high.
Unfiltered Leaders are best when
the organization vision is to grow to
dominance.
Unfiltered Leaders are best when the
organization is a start-up or is on the
precipice of failure.
Filtered Leaders are best when the
organization just wants to be in
business for 50+ years.
Both type leaders are important in
medium to large organizations.
One can choose leaders who are
likely to lead an organization to
big wins or big losses, or a leader who will definitely be good at
their jobs but almost certainly
wont be great. CW

Appropriate Punishment for Theft

of Trade Secrets - Death by Beheading
by Steve McDaniel and Jon Hurt,
Contributing Editors

aybe thats a little harsh. But,

that indeed WAS the punishment exacted by Chinese emperors for several thousand years upon
anyone caught attempting to export
Bombyx mori (silkworms) or mulberry
seeds (Morus alba) in order to start international silkworm competition (sericulture). But, sericulture reached Korea
around 200 BC, when waves of Chinese
immigrants arrived there.
Silk reached the West through a number of different channels. Shortly after
AD 300, sericulture traveled westward
and the cultivation of the silkworm was
established in India. Stories are also told
how, in AD 440, a Khotan prince (todays Hetian, a kingdom on the rim of
Taklamakan desert) courted and won a
Chinese princess. The princess smuggled
out silkworm eggs by hiding them in
her voluminous hairpiece - then Khotan
kept the secret too (why share it with the
Westerners and kill a good market.
Then around AD 550, two Nestorian
monks appeared at the Byzantine
Emperor Justinians court with silkworm eggs hidden in the hollow bamboo staves they carried (sneaky, but
hardly original). The Byzantine church
created imperial workshops, monopolizing production-again keeping the
secret to themselves. This allowed a
silk industry to be established in the
Middle East, undercutting the market
for ordinary-grade Chinese silk. By
the sixth century the Persians, too, had
mastered the art of silk weaving, developing their own rich textile artistry. It
was only around the time of the Second
Crusades 13th Century) that Italy began silk production with the introduction of 2000 skilled silk weavers from
Constantinople. Eventually silk production became widespread in Europe.

So it goes with trade secrets they

are only as good as your ability to keep
them a secret! But, several thousand
years? Dadgummit! That beats Coca
Colas
allegedly-deeplyvaulted and highly-vaunted secret formula by at
least a couple of millennia.
It goes to show you though
that protection of trade secrets on an international
scale has been with us for
a VERY long time.
Ratchet quickly forward to the present times.
Just as is the case between
states in the U.S., trade
secret laws range all over
the place internationally.
The likely reason for this
disharmony is, of course,
money. Filing a patent
gives a government an opportunity to charge patent fees for virtually every
contact with a patent office. Naturally, this was a
model that had a built in
incentive that inspired nations across the world to
adopt and harmonize laws
and procedures globally. In
contrast, a trade secret is,
at its core, simply maintaining information as confidential. And governments
cant easily charge a fee on
what they dont know exists. Hence, laws protecting trade secrets have been
slower to standardize between jurisdictions, though the trend to
smooth out differences is clearly visible.
In the United States, trade secrets
have historically been protected by individual state common laws. This made
seeking legal regress for misappropriation a more costly proposition given the
use of multiple lawyers familiar with

22 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

different local statutes. However, after a couple centuries the U.S. started
to get its act together with the publication of the Uniform Trade Secrets

Act in 1979. After a few decades, some

form of this act has now been made the
statute in 47 states. Adoption is pending in Massachusetts, with New York
and North Carolina being the remaining
holdouts. Is the same trend happening
elsewhere in the World? It would appear
to be so.

proposed creating a standardized set
of trade secret laws for enforcement
throughout the European Union. A
draft directive to have a minimum legal standard across EU states has been
created in recent months. Notably,
member states agreed that individual

national law may enhance trade secret protection beyond this standard,
that the trade secret definition used
by this standard would be consistent
with the World Trade Organizations
Agreement on Trade-related Aspects
of Intellectual Property Rights (the
TRIPs Agreement), and that the time
to pursue action for misappropriation would be six rather than two
years. Overall, this is a
mixed bag with some
acceptance of standardization while retaining the
legal flavor of individual
states. Finalization and
adoption by the European
Parliament still needs
to occur.
CHINA: Though the
world is a big place,
the up-coming giant for
trade and manufacture
is China. They are fully
aware of the concepts
and value of trade secrets,
ever since the days when
they kept the methods
of producing silk secret
for over two thousand
years by beheading. But,
no offense meant to our
friends on the mainland,
China has a less than
stellar
reputation
for
protecting others intellectual property. Phrases
such as possible systemic stealing of intellectual property of American
companies have been
used by the Treasury
Secretary Geithner in
2011. And those words
were backed by the steely
power a Federal Circuits
decision supporting the
United States International Trade
Commissions ability to block import
of items manufactured in China using
misappropriated trade secrets.

Procedure Law was amended so you

from trade secret misappropriation. So
hope is in the air.
GLOBAL: The Golden Land of
Global Standardization. After thousands of years of international commerce, the World Trade Organization
(WTO) adopted TRIPS agreement in
1995. Information that we would understand as a trade secret is defined in
the TRIPs agreement Article 39(2) as:
(a)is secret in the sense that it is not,
as a body or in the precise configuration
and assembly of its components, generally known among or readily accessible
to persons within the circles that normally deal with the kind of information
in question; (b) has commercial value
because it is secret; and (c) has been
subject to reasonable steps under the
circumstances, by the person lawfully
in control of the information, to keep
it secret. To protect your trade secrets
under Article 39(2) natural and legal
persons shall have the possibility of
preventing information lawfully within
their control from being disclosed to,
acquired by, or used by others without
their consent. Over 100+ member nations of the WTO that have adopted the
TRIPS agreement.
So your problem with international
trade secret misappropriation is solved
for all time? Nah, dont be silly! To
enforce your rights, Article 42 state
Members shall make available to right
holders civil judicial procedures. And
the agreement goes on with generic
minimal requirements for civil procedures such as written notice of basis of
claims provided to defendants, the right
for both parties to legal counsel and to
present evidence, etc. that are not exactly
a detailed standardization of rights and
procedures, but more of an agreement to
have rights and procedures.
And as we have seen from the US, the
European Union and China which have
adopted this agreement, the laws and
penalties for each nation / region still remain far from consistent. But it is a step
forward. And, it probably beats beheading. Stick around for another thousand
years, and everyone will probably operate
using the same rulebook.CW

has completed
its acquisition of
Comex.

PG is expected to introduce some products new to Mexico and the surrounding

Latin American region once it has consummated the announced plans in late June for
the $2.3 billion acquisition of Comex, expected
to gain approval from the Mexican anti-trust
agency soon.
The transaction will have, as a potential
benefit, that PPG will introduce into Mexico
state-of-the-art technology, as well as new architectural products that currently are not sold
in Mexico, said Mark Silvey, a spokesman for
the company, in Pittsburg.
Technical sales and support of the combined
brands will be a primary strategy in architectural, automotive and industrial sales, according to
a post-acquisition announcement comment by
Diane Kappas, PPG vice president for the marine coatings business in the Americas.
A clear key to Comex success in the region is its massive store network. The company
sells in Mexico and Central America through
some 3,600 stores, largely owned and operated
by over 700 concessionaires. Comex has some
3,900 employees, eight manufacturing facilities
and six distribution centers, and had sales of
approximately $1 billion in 2013. PPG expects
acquisition-related synergies of up to four percent of Comex sales or some $40 million
will be achieved over a two-year period, along
with double-digit increases in revenues, according to PPG CEO Charles Bunch, speaking in an
analyst conference call in mid-July. The majority of the synergies will arise from the purchase
of materials and basic inputs from powerful international suppliers, says Silvey. Overall, the
companys Latin America sales are projected to
rise to 11 percent of global sales from a current
five percent, with Comex sales added.

Architectural Segment to
Expand Most
PPG officials say it has no footprint in the
countrys architectural market, but the company
24 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

expects sales to be boosted by the rapid rate

of new home construction in Mexico, that are
typically hitting 400,000 units per year, according to company COO Michael McGarry, also
on the conference call.
PPGs architectural presence in Latin
America is primarily in the South America region. It now operates its Tintas Ideal business
in Brazil in Gravata, Rio Grande do Sul state,
producing architectural, industrial and marine
coatings and operates in Argentina, in Pilar,
Buenos Aires province, where it manufactures
architectural and industrial products.
PPG also manufactures architectural coatings in Paramaribo, Suriname, for export to
the Francophile Caribbean, the EMEA, and
other country markets; PPG has a presence in
French Guyana, Guadalupe and Martinique,
where it markets its La Seigneurie and
Geuthier brands.

Automotive and Industrial

Strength in the Region
Although PPG holds a majority share of the
Mexican automotive market, it will not run
as much risk of forming a monopoly as did
Sherwin-Williams in attempting to purchase
Comex, since the latter holds only about two
percent of the Mexican automotive market.
PPG operates an automotive and industrial
coatings plant in San Juan del Rio, Queretaro
state, Mexico, where it recently announced $27
million in new investments. New PPG sales in
the Mexican automotive paint aftermarket are
expected to grow particularly, thanks to the
Comex store and technical support network.
This demonstrates PPGs commitment to
Mexico and its intention to support the economy of Mexico, says Silvey.
In Brazil, PPG manufactures industrial
and marine coatings in Sumare, in Sao Paulo
state, where some $40 million in new investments are underway. In Medellin, Colombia,
PPG acquired Colpisa in 2012, a licensee of
PPGs automotive, industrial and architectural coatings technology, marketed in Colombia
and Ecuador.
PPG also purchased a distributorship in
Panama earlier this year. CW

BASF Forecasts Color Trends for

atisfying the color preferences of car buyers across the world is becoming more
challenging for producers of OEM coatings and their raw materials.
The choice of colors has been broadening
because of the development of new materials
and application methods. The technical requirements of the car companies, particularly
in the way the vehicles are manufactured, have
become more demanding.
Nonetheless the top coatings makers are rising
to the task of responding to these needs through the
development of new technologies in areas like effect
pigments, particle processing and coatings systems.
The test is whether they will be able to maintain the pace of innovation to keep up with a

26 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

mix of global, regional and local trends in peoples color tastes.

All these factors were highlighted at a press
conference on color at the world headquarters
of BASF Coatings at Muenster, Germany, in
early July.
The event was used by the companys color
designers both to issue their forecasts of automotive color trends for 2014/2015 and to predict some changes in the choice of colors of car
owners over the next several years.
These shifts in preferences will be dictated
by a range of influences such as fashion, contemporary art and culture and economic and
political tendencies. A significant tendency will
be a move to the hyperlocal with communities
wanting more control over their lives while at
the same time people will also want to show
their own individuality.
The increase in individuality can be seen
as a reaction against globalization, explained
August 2014

Europe International Coatings Scene

Mark Gutjahr, head of design at BASF
Europe. People have a need for a sense
of uniqueness, of things which are special.
They want to show who they really are,
their true selves but not necessarily in an
up-front way. Satisfying all these needs
through different colors and surfaces can
be difficult with cars.
Individuality in cars can be shown
through shades and variations of the
main colors, in which in Europe and
much of the rest of the world the top
preferences have been altering in recent years.
The fastest growing color in the
European auto market has been white,
said Gutjahr. Seven years ago white
had a market share in the German auto
market of three percent. Now it is 27
percent. The main loser has been silver
whose share in Germany has dropped
from 40 percent to 27 percent.
The major colors, which in addition
to silver and white include in Europe
black, blue, red and brown, are having
to be modified to suit individual or localized tastes usually with the help of
effect pigments.
We are seeing different whites on
cars across Europe depending on the
region or country, said Astrid Van der
Auwera from BASFs global design team.
In some parts of Europe it might have
a bluish hue and in others a yellow one
with a hint of silver.
BASFs designers are forecasting that
while demand for white will remain
strong, the emerging colors of the future
will be red, turquoise and aubergine.
The company has been gaining an
increased capacity for differentiation of
colors through the development of innovative effect pigments through the
thinning and shaping of metallic and
glass flakes. These can, for example,
make a car body appear bright and dark
from different viewing angles with the
same coatings.
The XFine coatings of BASF comprise very thin aluminium flake particles
which are arranged flat next to the other
to provide a mirror effect. The color of
the car appears particularly bright on the
edges of its body and very dark when
viewed from the side.

Its latest effect innovation is the

XSpark OEM coating which is based
on uniformly shaped and sized particles
made of a glass whose exact identity
BASF is not revealing, except that it has
a similar chemistry to boron silicate.

The major colors,

which in addition
to silver and white
include in Europe
black, blue, red and
brown, are having
to be modified to
suit localized tastes
ususally with the help
of effect pigments.
A key feature is that due to the consistent shape and size of its particles there
is no or hardly any interference with
the reflection of the light, explained
Stephan Schwarte, head of BASFs
basecoat pigments/dispersions and color
design laboratory. This means that it
produces an intense, precise sparkle that
does not have the rainbow colors of other effect pigments.
With effect pigments being applied
on cars in a layer above the colored
basecoats, an important result of the
XSpark technology is that the clean reflected light of its particles enables a pure
color to come through from underneath.
With the aid of our innovations in effects were already able to focus more on
the in-between that space between the
main colors, said Gutjahr. Now withXSpark we can provide the additional special attraction of pure color. Its all part
of the overall wow effect with a different
visual impact inside and outside full light.
The new advances gives the company greater versatility in meeting the

August 2014 www.coatingsworld.com

requirements of the auto manufacturers

for colors and effects which are specific
to their models.
They want colors and effects
which are unique to them, Gujahr
commented.They dont want colors
which they have to share with their competitors. Each model will have its own
body shapes, lines and contours which
need special colors and effects.
Also new color concepts do not just
have to meet the visual requirements of
OEMs for their models but need to be
consistent with the demands of their application systems.
The automobile makers have different paint shops so a specific color
coating that works in one may not
work in another, said Schwarte. You
have to adjust the colors for different
application conditions and leave room
in your formulations for this. You even
have to take into account the size of
pigments particles to ensure they are
suitable for the filters in paint pipelines
in paint shops.
The design and performance of robot
paint sprayers have to be considered. At
the moment they make up an average 20
percent of paint work on new automobiles. But this proportion will be increasing in an effort to cut costs.
The atomizers on the robot heads
reduce the paint to tiny, invisible droplets, which provide a high level of
transfer efficiency, explained Christian
Bornemann, head of BASFs application center for coatings at Muenster.
But several factors influence this performance, such as air flow, temperature and humidity, as well as how the
droplets respond to travelling through
a 70,000 kW electrical field during the
spraying process.
Innovative colors can take a long
time to reach the automobile market
usually approximately two to three
years but sometimes as long as five,
mainly because of the need for tests,
such as those for weather resistance and
application consistency. Once a color
idea has been conceived the hard task is
verifying its feasibility in terms of paint
shop conditions and the practical needs
of the OEM manufacturer. CW

Marine Coatings FEATURE

Key issues impacting the market include environmental regulations and oversupply of vessels, resulting in reduced newbuilds.
The marine coatings marketplace is a sizeable and diverse
industry consisting primarily of large, ocean traveling commercial vessels, said Tom Molenda, global director of marine coatings, PPG Industries. 2013 was a mixed year for this segment.
Conditions were difficult due to an oversupply of vessels and
not enough demand for cargo. However, freight rates stabilized
and even began to grow slightly. Demand for newly built vessels was on the rise providing an increase in this area for the
first time in several years. While the marketplace will continue
to be a challenging one in 2014, there are some signs that the
bottom has been reached and forecasts indicate improvement in
the coming years.
The overall marine industry has been under a lot of pressure
due to oversupply of vessels, which has resulted in falling freight
rates, said Dave Heflin, regional director marine coatings North
and Central America, AkzoNobel. Marine coatings demand has
been affected by a reduction in the demand for new marine vessels. The market has also been impacted by reduced maintenance
budgets for existing vessels resulting in lower freight costs.
Heflin reported that the market did show some signs of improvement in 2013 as the market moved into a better supplydemand balance. We expect that trend to continue, he added.
There has been considerable growth in the oil and offshore
industry, which use many of the same coatings. Key areas of
growth have been with natural gas facilities and floating production and storage and offloading (FPSO) units.
There are several factors contributing to growth in the marine coatings market. One major factor is the recent growth of
the global fleet and the subsequent need for drydocking.

The global marine fleet has been growing in terms of DWT

(dead weight tonnage) during the last few years, said Christian
Ottosen, group marine marketing director, Hempel. This is primarily due to the significant newbuilding inflow between 2009
and 2011, which is now coming into drydocking for the first
time. The high activity in the newbuilding industry during 20092011 has led to overcapacity in several shipping segments and
drop in demand for new vessels.
Despite signs of the newbuilding industry stabilizing towards
the end of 2013 and in the first quarter of 2014, the newbuilding
market is still very volatile, and industry focus remains clearly on
decreasing the total cost of vessel operation and improving the
fuel efficiency of existing and new vessels, Ottosen added.
Despite these challenges, there are some bright spots in
this marketplace.
One thing contributing to growth is the expansion in the overall global shipping trade, which is having a positive effect on the
coatings market, said Heflin. There is also growth in the offshore
market, they use the same types of coatings as the marine coatings
market. As well as growth coming from the overall expansion of
the market, there is particularly strong growth for products with
environmental advantages and proven performance.
While there are many factors that drive the demand for marine coatings, one of the most significant contributions is overall world economic growth and world trade, said Molenda.
Other factors include improving freight rates.
Geographic speaking the vast majority of demand for marine
coatings is in the Asia region, but there is sizable demand on a
global basis as well.
The biggest demand for marine coatings we see is where
most shops and offshore structures are built, which is China

and Korea, said Heflin. There is also demand where drydocking ship maintenance takes place, which includes China and
Korea, but also in the Middle East, Northern Europe and North
America.
Ottosen estimates that ninety percent of new building takes
in Asia. China and Korea have the highest market share, followed by Japan, said Ottosen. Newbuilding also takes place
in Europe, but for special vessel and cruise vessels. Marine maintenance follows the owners location.
Asia Pacific presents the most demand due to the sizeable number of shipyards that build and repair vessels, added
Molenda. The European region boasts a large owner base
which also results in a considerable demand.

Environmental Regulations/Raw Material

Issues
There is no doubt that environmental regulations are a key
driver for the marine coatings industry. Coatings formulators
need to reduce solvent content to comply with increasingly strict
environmental regulations. While North America and Europe
already have well established legislation, emerging regions are
beginning to adopt their own regulations.
This is particularly true when it comes to the restriction
in use of certain biocides and the push toward low or no VOC
products, said Heflin. Countries like China and Korea are
starting to adopt regulations that are similar to those in Europe
and the U.S. The trend and movement towards regulation is
there. As a global supplier we are aware of the demands these
regulations will place on our products the need for non-biocidal and low VOC products. We formulate our products with
these regulations in mind. But these changes also represent a
significant opportunity for a company like AkzoNobel. We are
a leader in biocidal products that are compliant with environmental regulations and we are prepared for the future. We are
staying ahead of the curve by developing nonbiocidal products
that are ahead of the legislative curve.
PPG works closely with its suppliers on a continuous basis to
help manage not only changes in raw material prices, but also
with respect to innovations that can formulate into its proprietary coatings. We are confident that we are well positioned
to manage and adapt to situations of change in many facets of
our business, said Molenda. Our goal is always to minimize
the impact to our customers to the best of our abilities, but in
certain instances pricing increases become unavoidable.
In Hempel were constantly following the environmental
regulations; we adjust our products to meet both present and
future market demands, combining environmental and performance aspects, said Ottosen. In marine, most environmental
regulations will eventually become global, even though they
were initiated locally.
Hempel adjusts its products to meet the market demands and
prices in terms of raw material prices and fluctuations. Furthermore,
efforts are put into optimizing and reducing our assortment, moving
towards a truly global assortment, said Ottosen. We source our
raw materials mainly from global suppliers to ensure consistency in

our products and in our product ranges.

There are numerous trends in technology within the marine
coatings industry. One of the most noteworthy areas making
great strides in innovation is in fouling protection products,
said Molenda. The long-term trends are towards more environmentally friendly fouling protection products that provide
superior performance for todays coatings.
The focus in recent years for marine coatings is on efficiency
both in terms of fuel efficiency as well as product performance
efficiency in order to reduce maintenance costs.
For hull coatings, the focus is on developing products
that are highly fuel-efficient during drydocking periods, said
Ottosen. Major technologies head towards the use of silicone.
For example, Hempels HEMPAGUARD, which combines silicone with low content of biocides.
When it comes to fuel efficiency the focus is on developing
initiatives to deal with low steaming, variations in speed, trading patterns and idle periods which all are crucial to meet
the demands of the changing marine industry. For other areas,
vessel efficiency is important in relation to cost efficiency during
drydocking periods. For example, we have developed a series of
products for water ballast tanks that reduce the risk of cracking,
thus reducing the maintenance cost during the vessels lifetime.
There are also other areas such as cargo holds, where cost
efficiency can also be achieved, Ottosen added. We have a series of products that can perform for up to 10 years, hence significantly reducing the likelihood of major repairs.
According to Heflin, while they key trends are for products
with efficiency benefits, such as hull coatings that lower fuel
consumption and low and no VOC systems, the trend is also
for proven performance benefits, such as cargo coatings with
improved impact resistance or those that are compatible with
a wider range of cargoes. The owners want flexibility with
a range of cargo, he explained. An example would be our
Intersleek range, It provides fuel savings of nine percent. Owners
switching from biocidal antifoulings to our Intersleek range can
receive carbon credits. It is a step forward in the industry.

New Products
International Paint, part of AkzoNobel, recently launched two
new fouling control technologies. Intercept 8000 LPP, is a new

Asia/Pacific Coatings Market FEATURE

he Asia Pacific region is perhaps one of the most diverse

areas on our planet. Not only is it comprised of numerous dissimilar countries but the myriad of cultures, language, religion and politics is mind boggling. There is also the
sheer size of the region. The Asia Pacific region, as defined in
this article, is an immense region, covering some 2.8 billion hectares of land area, or approximately 22 percent of the total global
land area. Stretching from the borders of China-Mongolia with
the NIS to the north to the southern tip of Australia and New
Zealand to the south, this region covers the spectrum of conditions from northern temperate and boreal through the range
of tropical and subtropical zones and back to temperate. From
the high plateaus and mountains of Pakistan to the west and
extending to the island countries of North Asia and the South
Pacific, the Asia Pacific region incorporates conditions of moist
tropical to arid and semi-arid desert. As would be expected by
this huge geography, the human and social dimensions of the
Asia Pacific region are equally diverse.
Its fairly safe to assume that the Asia Pacific region presents
an enormous challenge to the coating industry since this is a
region where one size definitely doesnt fit all. Depending on
the segment, performance requirements by country differ significantly as does how the coating is actually applied. In the
Southern part of the region (i.e. Australia/New Zealand) the
architectural market demands a gloss coating. In addition, in
the ANZ market there is a strong DIY (Do It Yourself) market
whereas in most other countries in the region its a contractor
applied market.
The Asia Pacific region is home to about 62 percent of the
total global population (i.e., approximately 4.4 billion). China
and India account for more than half of this regions total population. India is projected to pass China in population size in
about 15 years, becoming the worlds most populous country
with about 1.5 billion people.
The region represents the single largest growth opportunity
for the coatings industry. In 2001 the region represented 27 percent of the global coating market compared to 33 percnt for the
Americas and 36 percent for Europe. In 2010 the region represented 40 percent of the coatings market while the Americas
share declined to 26 percent and Europe declined to 28 percent.
This trend is expected to continue. Depending on how you define the composition of the region, the total Asia Pacific region
coating market is estimated to be valued at over $62 billion with
an annual growth rate estimated at 12-15 percent.
The charts on this page describe the coating market in Asia
Pacific both by segment and by country.
Clearly, the largest revenue segment is architectural and
the largest revenue coating market resides inside of China. Of
course, as you might expect, actual segments vary in size and
revenue depending on the country. Paint consumption in China
in 2013 was three times that of 2003 and the Indian paint volume was about two and one-half times greater. Many of the
smaller coating consumers in the region have also undergone
significant growth. In contrast, coating consumption in Japan
has declined and the South Korean volume is about the same.

China accounts for 55 percent of the regions consumption

in volume and 65 percent of the value. India is now the secondlargest consumer in tons, with a 13 percent share, and is third
in value, with 6 percent. Japan is second in value, comprising
11 percent of the total, but is expected to be displaced by India
within the next two years. Korea is the fourth-largest consumer
in both volume and value. These four countries took 84 percent of the regions tons and 85 percent of the value. Indonesia,
Thailand and Vietnam each consumes about 2-3 percent of
the regional volume and are considered expanding markets.
Australia, Taiwan and Singapore are mature outlets for coatings.
Nippon Paint (including Nipsea JVs), AkzoNobel, Kansai
Paint, PPG and Asian Paints are the five largest suppliers of coatings in the Asia-Pacific region, and together they capture 28 percent of the coating sales in 2013. AkzoNobel and Nippon Paint
are the leading architectural paint suppliers, with Asian Paints
third. Dulux (Australia), Kansai Paint, Valspar and Berger Paint
(India) are in the next tier of architectural paint suppliers. Kansai
Paint and Nippon Paint are the largest industrial paint suppliers,
each with about an 8 percent share. AkzoNobel and PPG are
next in size and are followed by Jotun and KCC (Korea).
The changes that are happening in this market somewhat
mirror the history of coatings in other parts of the globe. In
essentially all markets the water-based coatings are gaining significant market share (especially in the architectural segments).
In 2013 approximately 70 percent of the architectural market
was comprised of water-based coatings. Water-based growth
in the industrial segments has been slow but it is happening.
Today about 10 percent of the industrial segment is water-based
while 14 percent is powder. Clearly, solvent-based coatings are

the largest group of products in the industrial market but that
is changing driven by increasing environmental concerns, especially in heavily populated countries like China and India.
There are numerous drivers in place that will support the
growth expectations for Asia Pacific. Perhaps the largest of
which is infrastructure investment. Approximately 40 percent
of future global infrastructure investment is slated for the Asia
Pacific region. That investment strategy will provide the basis
for an enormous amount of high value coatings.

Coating Trends For Asia Pacific

Historically, Asia Pacific has been a low cost, low performance
expectation market, mostly served by solvent-based systems
(Japan, Australia and New Zealand being the exception).
However, with the emergence of the regions primary countries
(i.e., China, India, etc.) as a major participant in the global
marketplace major changes have occurred. An area of potential
growth that cuts across all coating segments in Asia Pacific involves green coatings (i.e. environment friendly systems). The
green coatings manufacturing companies and research institutions are infusing high investment for the future advancements
and technology of environment friendly and nonhazardous
coatings. These investments are to create coatings with similar performance as compared to conventional VOC contained
coatings. Asia Pacific is the largest region followed by North
America and Europe. Countries such as China, India, Japan,
Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and others are growing
markets for green coatings. Major players in the green coatings
industry include the same players that participate in conventional systems (i.e. AkzoNobel, PPG Industries, Henkel, SherwinWilliams, Axalta, Valspar, BASF, Kansai and others).

various substrates, long term durability, etc.). To meet these demands companies such as Nippon and AkzoNobel established
regionally based facilities to better understand the relationship
between local raw materials, application techniques, substrate
differences, etc. Over the past years most coating companies in
Asia Pacific have been able to formulate environmental friendly
paints. Water-based coatings dominate this particular segment.
The critical drivers for future growth include a growing
middle class in key Asia Pacific counties, which has fueled
commercial and residential construction. In addition, as various countries in the region incorporate more green and sustainable construction this will be a positive driver for more
decorative coatings.
Major coating producers in Asia Pacific are working on sustainable coatings (coatings that provide energy savings); functional or so called smart coatings, which will enhance mold
and dirt resistance; more environmentally friendly coatings that
are water borne, offer reduced VOC and are formaldehyde free.
The major threats to the future growth of this segment include: increased cost of essential raw materials; continued stagnation or decline in the global market which would negatively
impact the growth of the regions middle class.

Decorative Coatings In Asia Pacific

History shows that the decorative coating market owes its
growth and sustainability to the construction and/or renovation
of commercial/residential properties. Over the past few years we
have seen a significant increase in such activities in China, India,
Indonesia, etc. That activity has resulted in an increased demand
for decorative coatings. Along with this increased demand has
been the need to produce coatings that are more environmentally friendly (i.e. reduction of VOC, removal of lead based pigments, etc.) and provide improved performance characteristics
(i.e. resistance to mold growth, dirt and loss of adhesion from

Marine Coatings In Asia Pacific

The Asia Pacific marine coatings market is expected to witness
steady growth owing to the robust development of the shipbuilding and offshore engineering industries that are located in
the region. It is estimated that marine coatings represent about
6 percent of the total coatings market in Asia Pacific. Generally
speaking, ocean going ships are subject to harsh environments
and the constant need for their maintenance and repair will be a
significant driver to sustain market demand in the years to come.
An analysis of the Asia Pacific marine coating market finds that
the market earned revenues of$4.84 billion in 2012 and industry experts estimates this will reach $6.69 billion in 2016.
However, the rising costs of the raw materials used in these coatings mostly due to fluctuating crude oil prices as a result of
political tensions in the Middle East have heightened production expenditure and reduced manufacturers margins. Titanium
dioxide, in particular, is a key raw material, and any increase
in its price will directly affect consumer demand. Epoxy-based
anticorrosive marine coatings are slated for high growth in Asia

Pacific due to its favorable cost and enhanced performance. In
the case of antifouling coatings, acrylates are preferred. Foul release technologies are expected to show gradual growth if the
industry can develop improved coatings in copper- and tin-free
antifouling systems. Oddly, the economic slowdown in Europe
and North America that has led to a decline in sea trade and
curbed marine coating sales has also led to the outsourcing of
shipbuilding activities to countries such as China that provide
cheap labor. Hence, Asia Pacifics position as a hotspot for shipbuilding will remain intact, spurring the marine coatings market
continued growth in the region. Although China, South Korea
and Japan lead the ship building industry globally (i.e., 80 percnt share of the industry) new shipping hubs are appearing in
Vietnam, Philippines and India. It is clear that Asia Pacific will
retain a dominant position in ship building globally.
New innovations in the marine coating segment include glass
flake epoxies that improve abrasion resistance; coatings focused
on reducing drag which would result in increased fuel efficiency
and more environmentally friendly systems (i.e., less toxic antifouling systems).

along with steam/high pressure wash-down protection and can

be applied in hot, cold, humid, dry environments.

Automotive Coating In Asia Pacific

Firmly on its mark with economic and environmental trends, the
global automotive coatings industry is set to grow. Industry experts have projected that the automotive OEM coating market
will grow from $8.7 billion in 2013 to $11.7 billion by 2018.
Of course, this projection assumes a gradual improvement in the
global economy. Should that not be the case then this projection

Protective Coatings In Asia Pacific

Protective coatings account for 12-14 percent of the total
Asia Pacific coating market. China holds a resounding 78
percent market share in this particular segment. This trend is
expected to continue for many years to come as this segment
is tied closely with infrastructure investment and China is
expected to see 40 percent of future global infrastructure investment. The projected high growth of industrial segments
like energy and power, oil and gas and general manufacturing
industries will ensue the continued growth of this segment.
There are numerous companies involved with this segment
(i.e. AkzoNobel, PPG, Asian Paint, Jotun, Hempel, etc.).
Historically, the performance needs of this segment have
been met using solvent-based, two part epoxy systems (or similar systems). Coating manufacturers involved in this segment
are working on producing systems that are water-based, have
better functionality (i.e. performance) and are more environmentally friendly (i.e., reduced VOC). The Holy Grail for this
segment would be environmentally friendly systems that can
withstand extreme industrial conditions (exhibit great corrosion and abrasion resistance), have zero percent flame-spread
fire retardant, provide waterproofing and abrasion protection

will not be met.

The highest demand this year should come from China, the
United States, Japan, Germany, India and South Korea. The
highest five-year growth rate is expected in South Korea, India,
the U.S., China, the UK and Mexico. Key players in the global
market include PPG Industries (U.S.), BASF (Germany), Axalta
Coating Systems/DuPont (U.S.), Kansai Paint (Japan) and
Nippon Paint (Japan).
Changing demands in automobile and coatings technology, auto markets and regional economies have forced the
auto paint industry to evolve. Today, it is aligned with environmental, technology, health and safety, and economic
trends that will drive solid growth through 2018. Global automakers turned out 63 million passenger cars, 16.9 million
light commercial vehicles and 4.1 million heavy commercial
vehicles in 2012.
The Asia Oceania (Central and South Pacific) region is now
the worlds largest automotive coatings market, with the highest
revenues and regional compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
estimated at 7.85 percent for the next five years. China leads
this segment but other Asia Pacific countries are expected to
show significant growth over the next few years.
Asia Oceania produces more vehicles than any other region
more than 47.2 million this past year alone, making it the
most important market for the automotive coating industry. The
strong regional presence of Nippon, Kansai and KCC Paints will
definitely help to fuel the market growth for coatings in this
region. Global players PPG Industries, BASF, Axalta Coating
Systems (formerly DuPont) also have a presence in the region
and are likely to influence demand. Some of these companies
have chosen to set up joint ventures with local manufacturers.

FEATURE Asia/Pacific Coatings Market

Major Coating Suppliers Positioned In Asia
Pacific
The coating suppliers present in Asia Pacific read like a Whos
Who listing of major movers and shakers in the global coating market. Based on the following listing of suppliers in each
country, it would appear that AkzoNobel and Nippon Paint are
the heavy hitters in this region. Both have presence and significant investments in all key countries and market segments.
A. Australia/New Zealand: Dulux & Valspar
B. China: Nippon Paint, AkzoNobel, Valspar
C. Hong Kong: AkzoNobel, Nippon Paint, Camel Paint
D. India: Asian Paint, Kansai
E. Indonesia: AkzoNobel, Nippon Paint, Mowilex
F. Japan: Nippon Paint, Kansai, Skk
G. Malaysia: AkzoNobel, Nippon Paint, Jotun
H. Philippines: Boysen, Charter Chemical, Dutch Boy
I. Singapore: AkzoNobel, Nippon Paint, Jotun
J. South Korea: Kcc, Samhwa, Dpi/Nooro
K. Taiwan: Yungchi, AkzoNobel, Kansai
L. Thailand: Toa, AkzoNobel, Nippon Paint
M. Vietnam: AkzoNobel, 4 Oranges, Nippon Paint
The presence and size/composition of the investment made
by these global players in the Asia Pacific coatings market will
make it extremely difficult for new comers to enter. In addition, over time, as this region continues to grow and become a
more intergral part of the global marketplace the small, country
centric coating companies will most likely lose out. A possible
solution would be for these small companies to form alliances
with the larger global players or perhaps consider becoming an
acquisition target while they still have value in their local markets. Unfortunately, many of the domestic producers in some
Asia Pacific countries have chosen to meet the threat posed by
the larger global players through pursuance of a volume oriented price war strategy. Since these small players dont have
superior technology products to offset lost profit stemming
from their chosen strategy we will see more and more of them
simply dissapear over time.
The immediate focus for coating producers in the Asia Pacific
will be to construct more cost competitive, environment friendly
systems across all coatings segments that also offer performance
such as heat resistance, dirt and mold resistance and improved
adhesion to a variety of substrates.
Looking ahead, the Asia Pacific coatings market will require smart coatings a coating that changes its properties in
response to an environmental stimulus, sustainable coatings
products that protect the environment without sacrificing
overall coatings performance and high performance coatings
coatings to make airplanes lighter, buildings cooler, cargo
ships more fuel efficient, and wind turbines smoother and
more aerodynamic. The Asia Pacific coatings market is no
longer regarded as a low cost, low performance expectation
market. It has truly become a dynamic force and leader in the
total global coaatings market. CW

High Performance and

Special Effects Pigments Market

The growth of the high performance and special effect pigments has show an upward
trend in the past year.
Bridget Klebaur, Associate Editor

igh performance and special effect pigments manufacturers Coatings World interviewed reported continued
economic recover.
The overall economic growth continues upward across
mature markets, said Scott Heitzman, global products manager, high performance pigments, Sun Chemical Performance
Pigments. The European market is showing moderate improvement. Emerging markets are flat due mostly to slower growth
in China. High performance and special effect pigments continue to outrun the economy. This is largely due to color trends.
Architectural palettes have taken on harmony and neutral palettes that are soft but colorful.
According to Heitzman, automotive sport and SUV
models are contributing to growth with high performance

pigment reds and blues. Strong fleet sales in the Americas

bring volume on saturated primary colors, he added. Tricoat special effect sparkle is supporting the growth in effects. These sectors will continue to outpace the economy.
Effects will continue to benefit by the need to differentiate. The ease of use and dependability of high performance
pigments will gain share from classical pigments as well as
enjoy new use in emerging markets.
BASF also found that the market continues to grow.
The North American automotive production recovery continues with a three percent growth rate anticipated for 2014, said
Mike Crosby, transportation segment manager transportation,
BASF Industrial Coatings & Plastics Business. So across the
board we are seeing increased demand for pigments. Increased

demand is particularly pronounced in our diverse effect pigment
lines area where OEMs seek to differentiate their vehicles with
new stylings. As paints with increased use of effects reach the
refinish market we anticipate increased demand there as well.
As China continues to lead the world in auto production, it
has emerged as a major consumer of these types of pigments.
Chinas emergence as the largest automotive market, along
with other Asian Pacific growth, has driven increased regional paint production, Crosby said. BASF is meeting the
needs of our regional and global customers with additional
investments in the Asian Pacific region including investments
in China and Korea.
The emerging markets, China, India and Eastern Europe, are
still the markets where per capita gross domestic product is the
fastest growing.
The demand for durable goods, buildings and automotive
needs will continue the surge in the sales of special effect and
high performance pigments, Heitzman said. Sun Chemical and
its parent company, DIC, have a strong manufacturing, technical support, sales, and distribution presence in China. We have
the capability to supply pigments to global, multi-national and
local Chinese coatings customers. Our new logistics platform
furthers our commitment to growth in the region.

Raw materials are increasing, which does create problems

for some companies.
BASF makes every effort to avoid passing along increased
raw material prices with improved operational efficiency and
capacity utilization.
We welcome the opportunity to work with customers to
find ways to mitigate the impact where possible, Crosby said.
Its difficult to insulate customers from the rise of raw material costs in todays volatile global economy.
Our supply teams monitor the raw material indexes and
guide our manufacturing team on process and raw material productivity, Heitzman said. We have collaborative sourcing and
supply personnel in our facilities around the world. The global
reach of Sun Chemical has proven to provide the flexibility and
stability to minimize the impact on raw material increases.
Although HPP and special effect pigments are higher in cost,
the performance and visual appeal they offer is well worth the
investment. An investment in high performance pigments can
yield more in return for our customers than standard pigments,
Heitzman said. High performance pigments make products
that are more appealing to consumers, help businesses become
more competitive, grow sales and improve margins.
From a technical standpoint, the most important property

BASF Designers Present Automotive Color Trends

The designers at BASFs Coatings division have published their automotive
color trends for 2014/2015. With their collection entitled Under the Radar, new
color ranges are appearing on the trend
radar. The development of special effects
is setting new accents and opening up unusual color ranges. BASFs designers are
predicting that this will make automotive
colors more complex and more individual
in the future. This ability to stand out from
the crowd caters to the consumers desires, since the topic of individualization
is playing an increasingly important role,
especially when buying a car.
Special effects ensure dynamics and
complexity
The designers observe a social change
moving from luxury to a heightened
awareness of quality and values. For automotive colors, this means that what
counts is not attention-grabbing, but
rather the wow-effect at second glance.
Innovative special effects create these accents. For instance, the new collection

contains the newly developed XSpark

special-effect coating. XSpark contains
very fine glass particles that reflect the
light, thus creating a distinctive sparkle
that is particularly effective only in light.
XSpark opens up brand new opportunities for translating new values and a new
quality awareness into automotive color,
said BASF color designer Florina Trost.
Thanks to a targeted special effect,
classic colors like blue or silver develop
a completely individual color behavior.
Thereby, they visually reinforce the car
bodies geometry and vitalize their broad
surfaces with brilliant sparkle (XSpark).
Mark Gutjahr, head of Design BASF
Europe, explained the significance of
special-effect coatings: For years, the
differences have basically only been between solid, pearl-effect and metallic.
Now, we are starting to see some movement in this area. The targeted interaction between color and special effects is
making automotive colors more complex
and multifaceted. This development will
also continue to accompany us for a few

38 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

years. We havent yet exhausted the potential in the special-effect palette.

Strong colors demonstrate individuality
The extraordinary color positions in the
new collection are also determining the
trend toward more individuality. Bold
colors like red will shape our image of individual mobility, Gutjahr said. The growing share of powerful reds can already be
seen on the roads. According to the designers, as red develops over the coming
years, it will also continue to move in the
range of strong, dark purples. The potential of green will continue to be visible in
a wide range of nuances, from intensive
turquoise to sparkling moss green.
The trend toward individuality has
therefore developed further. Its not only
about delimiting and differentiating yourself. Instead, it is becoming increasingly important to communicate a certain attitude,
and this opens up new color spaces and
lends more weight to the topic of color,
said Astrid Van der Auwera from BASFs
global design team, summarizing the trend.

exhibited by high performance pigments that distinguishes them
from other pigments is their durability in the applications. Some
examples of this include light fastness and resistance to chemical
attack and high temperatures.
Use of effect pigments allows customers to highlight their
products in terms of design and appearance, drawing the end
use customer to their lines and providing consumer appeal.
In addition, the metallic series of pigments provide functional
properties to end use applications such as improved anti-corrosion, thermal stability, and UV reflectance.
The exterior paint of a vehicle has a considerable impact on
consumer impression of a vehicle.
Higher chroma opaque, transparent and effect pigments
create new color spaces that help OEMs differentiate their
products and drive sales, Crosby said. An incremental cost
increase on a single pigment in the price of todays vehicle is
relatively negligible from the consumer perspective. Often a
higher chroma effect pigment can be used to deliver reduced
loading or greater hiding which generates value in use for our
formulating customer.
Some new products that have been released by
Sunchemical are Sunfast Elastomer Black. These low gloss
black pigments come with improved jetness for waterborne,
solventborne and powder coatings, which impart physical
toughness, chemical resistance, and water resistance onto
most applications. Made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled rubber, the newest addition to Sun Chemical
Performance Pigments diverse pigment line utilizes a fine
particle size black elastomer pigment that creates an attractive low sheen coating with excellent flow and leveling in
thin, smooth finishes. Ideal for coatings on plastic, wood,
coil and powder coatings, the new offering is well-suited
for use on consumer electronics, automotive interiors, flooring, cabinets, furniture, direct to metal finishe and soundproofing coatings.
Sun Chemicals new SunMica Exterior XC is a series of
13 pearlescent special effect pigments specially geared for
exterior coatings applications, especially powder coatings.
Available in all major colors, including six particle size distributions of pearlescent white, SunMica Exterior XC consists of thin natural mineral mica flakes coated with optical

and outdoor architectural coatings in powder and liquid
paints. Sun recently added products to its perylene line.

These pigments allow customers to slim their portfolio and

retain their ability to color the extremes. This range offers
high transparent blue or yellow shade maroons and works
in both water and solvent systems. Palomar which is A reddish-blue high performance effect pigment for coatings that
can maintain color properties for years under the impact of
sunlight and other harsh weather conditions. In addition to
strong weather-fastness capabilities, Palomar can be used in
both water and solvent systems for OEM, refinish automotive and industrial coatings.
Benda-Lutz SPLENDAL which is known for unsurpassed
brilliance, pronounced flop effect, gloss and opacity allows
coatings formulators to produce dynamic liquid metal and
chrome-like effects. These microscopically thin aluminum
platelet suspensions are produced with a unique vapor deposition technology providing smooth flake geometries for
the highest level of brilliance and coverage for solvent, water based and energy curable coatings.
BASF has launched several new products recently.
Last year we launched several high saturation Irgazin organic orange and blue shade reds for extreme conditions for
automotive and industrial application, Crosby said. Our
Lumina Royal line of reduced particle size distribution mica
pigments helps automotive stylists in the Blue, Indigo and
Aqua shades. Our Glacier line of synthetic mica is also gaining popularity in a range of cosmetic, industrial, and automotive applications. Finally, our silver dollar aluminum flake
Paliocrom line is helping to define the next generation of automotive stylings.
Although HPP and special effect pigment manufacturers remain focused on the automotive and industrial coatings markets
to grow their business, they also look to other industries as well.
Automotive and industrial coatings will remain the foundation for growth of high performance pigments markets, however, growing requirements for stability and functionality will
position architectural and building materials for tremendous
potential growth, Heitzman said.
It can be hard to predict specific market trends but BASF recognizes consumers are increasingly seeking customized product
features reflecting their unique styles.
OEM designers recognize this and we will support them
with pigments to create unique esthetics, durable performance,
and consistent quality, Crosby said. The effect pigment technology is still evolving and that is where BASF feels we can help
deliver optimum value for our customers.
Creating new and unique color spaces while meeting stringent weatherability standards remains a core mission of Suns
development efforts.
Heat management products including IR reflective and
transparent pigments help facilitate passenger comfort while
contributing to global sustainability, Crosby explained. We

Showa Denko Opens Ethyl

Acetate Plant
Showa Denko has begun commercial operation of its new ethyl acetate plant at
Oita Complex using its proprietary production process technology. A ceremony
was recently held at the complex to celebrate the completion of the new plant.
Ethyl acetate is an organic solvent
used in wide-ranging applications, including printing ink, paint, and adhesives for electronic devices. Its business
environment continues to be severe due
to the rise in raw material/fuel costs and
the increase in imports. SDK therefore
decided last year to change the production process by adopting a highly efficient
proprietary technology, and started constructing a new plant.
The conventional process was a twostage process in which acetaldehyde, synthesized from ethylene, is converted into
ethyl acetate. In the new process technology adopted this time, however, acetic
acid is directly added to ethylene, enabling efficient production of high-quality ethyl acetate. While the technology is
already being used at our production site
in Indonesia, this is the first time that the
technology is commercially used in Japan.

BASF First Styrodur Plant

Completely Switched to
New Flame Retardant
BASF is the first European manufacturer
to have completely switched a production
plant for XPS (extruded polystyrene rigid
foam) to a new polymeric flame retardant (PolyFR). Styrodur insulating panels produced at BASFs plant in Tudela,
Spain, are now made exclusively with
the polymeric flame retardant, which
has a superior environmental profile
while offering the same flame retardancy.
BASFs other Styrodur production plants
in Ludwigshafen and Schwarzheide,
Germany, and Bibbiano, Italy, will all be
switched to the new flame retardant by
the end of 2014. BASF thus continues its
successful strategy as the market leader
for polystyrene-based insulating materials in Europe.

After a construction period of slightly
more than fifteen months the new stateof-the-art plant is currently in the commissioning and start-up phase. The new
plant is Oxeas first production site in
Asia. It will complement Oxeas three
existing specialty esters plants in Europe
and will boost Oxeas global production
capacity for specialty esters by 40 percent.

for, among others, the automotive, architectural and medical sectors.

Linde and BASF Team Up

for Production of Linear
Butenes & Butadiene
Technology
The Linde Group and BASF SE have entered into a cooperation to develop and
license processes for the on-purpose production of linear butenes and butadiene.
BASF has developed process technology
and catalysts as well as the extraction
technologies, while Linde is providing its
expertise for the integration, optimization
and commercialization of the process.
The newly developed process will deliver an on-purpose route from butane
to butadiene via butenes. Currently, the
industry relies mainly on butadiene as
a co-product from naphtha-cracking
to ethylene. The shift to lighter cracker
feedstock results in reduced volumes of
co-products. Therefore, the on-purpose
production of higher olefins is gaining
more and more importance, the companies reported. CW

SiVance, LLC has developed a new silicone

curative that improves the durable flexibility of epoxy polysiloxane topcoats without
sacrificing weatherability. The development
of this curative solves a major drawback to
epoxy polysiloxanes: brittleness and cracking that develops over time as the coating
continues to cure. This new product is
called C1008 Curative and is available in
commercial quantities. The product is currently registered under TSCA and REACH,
with other global approvals in progress.
Coatings subjected to a inch mandrel
bend test after aging. Sample A: Commercial
epoxy polysiloxane shows cracking and delamination after only 1 week aging. Sample
B: The same commercial epoxy polysiloxane modified with C1008 Curative passes
the bend test after aging for 1 year. C1008
Curative utilizes a proprietary structure that provides enhanced compatibility in epoxy systems. The product is fully
miscible with hydrogenated bisphenol-A
epoxy resins. Compatibilization of C1008
in other epoxy resins is possible with the
use of solvents (MEK, xylenes, etc.) or reactive diluents.

AkzoNobel Begins Restoration

on Dutch Royal Barge

AkzoNobel has begun work on restoring the Dutch Royal Barge, de Koningssloep, through a partnership with the National
Maritime Museum (Het Scheepvaartmuseum) in Amsterdam.
Experts from the companys yacht paints business are carrying out the intricate restoration mainly on the hull in order to
have the vessel seaworthy again by the summer of 2015.
The partly gilded Royal Barge was built in 1818 for King Willem I. Around 17 meters (56ft) in length, it was last used in 1962 for
the 25th wedding anniversary of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard. The barge is one of the most popular items in the collection
of The National Maritime Museum and with the 1 million donation by the players of the BankGiro Lottery the museum is able,
after restoration, to display the Royal Barge again.
When the museum approached us for help we didnt hesitate in agreeing to assist with the restoration, said Conrad Keijzer,
AkzoNobels Executive Committee member responsible for Performance Coatings. The Netherlands has a proud history as a seafaring nation and the Royal Barge is an iconic part of our countrys heritage. We are therefore very pleased to be involved and are
confident that our products and expertise will help restore the barge to its former glory.
Added Henk Dessens, director of Collections at the National Maritime Museum: We are delighted to be working with
AkzoNobel on this prestigious project. The company has more than 100 years of experience in developing and supplying marine
coatings and their help will be invaluable. The Royal Barge has a very special place in the hearts of the Dutch. We look forward to
putting it back on display for everybody, thanks to the generous contribution of the BankGiro Lottery.
Work on the barge is initially taking place in the north of the Netherlands, although members of the public will be able to view
some of the ongoing restoration on parts of the barge later this year at the National Maritime Museum. CW
