are the embodiment of
what a truck person
looks for in the versatile
vehicle: tough, powerful, efficient and
good looking. Whether towing a load
or toting a load, RAM trucks are work
vehicles that gobble up the road with
nary a difficulty. And that can be incity or off-road as the 4X4 package is
second to none.
Truck customers require a wide
range of off-road capability options and
RAM trucks are designed and engineered for the full spectrum, said Bob
Hegbloom, head of RAM Truck Brand,
FCA - North America. Anyone who
spends most days on the outskirts of a
job site or the weekend on the shore of
a favorite fishing hole will benefit from
the standard features.
The RAM comes in three models:
1500, 2500 and 3500. The 1500 is a fullsize pickup with a fuel economy mindset. With an eight-speed automatic transmission, thermal management system,
pulse-width modulation and active
aerodynamics with grille shutters and
air suspension, gas mileage can approach

smoother ride

The EcoDiesel, 3.0-liter powerplant

rolls on turbocharged, 60-degree, dual
overhead cams while delivering fuel
economy of 29 mpg on the highway.
With a 24-valve, V-6 engine that produces 240 horsepower and 420 pounds-perfoot of torque, its more efficient than all
available pickup trucks. The abundant
torque from the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine allows for up to 9,200 pounds of
towing capacity.
The EcoDiesel, developed and manufactured by VM Motori (a Chrysler
supplier since 1992), is one of six mated
to the TorqueFlite, the only eight-speed
automatic transmission offering the
most advanced diesel engines in the
marketplace. Equipped with a diesel
oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction, it
is emissions-compliant in all 50 states.
The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine with
variable-valve timing (VVT) offers 305

Frame and body modifications have

made the ride both smoother and safer
for passengers. For instance, tire blockers integrated in the frame rails reduce
interior rumble by transferring wheel
loads to the frame. And reinforced Apillars and door sills add to the structural integrity of the passenger compartment during impact.
The pulse-width modulation is a fuel-saving technology for the RAM 1500
that reduces parasitic electrical load,
which not only eliminates unnecessary
load on the alternator but also improves
the durability of other systems.
As opposed to a fixed displacement compressor, the variable displacement compressor (VDC) automatically
varies its pumping capacity to meet
air-conditioning demands rather than
work in an on/off fashion. As a result,
the variable displacement compressor
lessens loads on the engine to boost fuel

Driving

utomobile theft is
no laughing matter. It leaves people
without a means of transportation, costs the public more
money in insurance payments and taxes and can give
anyone the feeling of being
personally violated.
The FBI estimates that
around one million motor vehicles are stolen in the United
States each year. The Insurance
Bureau of Canada says that a car
is stolen every three and a half
minutes in Canada, an estimate
that translates to approximately
420 cars per day.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, the
chances of a car being stolen are
now significantly less than they
were in 1989. That could be due
to vehicle theft prevention systems that now come standard
on many new cars. While not
all vehicle thefts and breakins can be prevented, there are
many devices individuals can
employ to help reduce the risk
of vehicle theft.

immobilizing
devices
There are several types of
immobilizing devices available to protect a car from
theft. An immobilizing system
works by preventing thieves
from bypassing your ignition
switch and hot-wiring your
car. An immobilization device
can involve a kill switch that
needs to be turned on before
the car will start and can be
cleverly hidden. Most cars also
come with specially encoded
smart keys that are required to
start the car. The key is unique
to the make, model and VIN
number of the car.

car alarms
Car alarms work as a deterrent to theft, but they do not always prevent theft. The alarm
sounds when the vehicle is

Aggressive driving has no place on the road

curbing driver anger is one of the keys to keeping the roadways safe

ongested roadways and hectic

schedules can anger drivers in
a hurry to get from point A to point B.
While its easy to grow frustrated on the road,
the growing number of incidents of road rage
and driver aggression is a significant concern
that should make drivers think twice before
venting their frustrations when behind the
wheel.
The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) says the number
of fatal accidents involving enraged drivers

has increased tenfold since 2004. Between

2010 and 2013, the percentage of drivers in
the Washington, D.C. who said they often
felt uncontrollable anger toward another
driver on the road doubled, from 6 percent to 12 percent. Aggression on the part
of drivers is routinely cited as a major contributor to many fatal crashes and other accidents.
According to the American Psychological Association, some people may be predisposed to road rage. Risk-takers, individuals

who tend to anger more easily and people

who identify as being generally aggressive or
take-charge types may have a higher propensity to get angry behind the wheel.

road rage
The term road rage was coined by a local
Los Angeles news station after shootings occurred on several freeways in that city. NHTSA defines road rage as a driver committing
moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property; an assault with a mo-

tor vehicle or other dangerous weapon by the

operator or passenger of one motor vehicle on
the operator or passengers of another motor
vehicle. Road rage and aggressive driving
are similar, but in the eyes of the law, road
rage may result in a criminal charge while
aggression may lead to a traffic citation.
While few drivers can say they have never
become heated while driving, routine rage or
aggressiveness is a cause for concern. The following are some ways drivers can tame their
aggressive driving.

towing capacity and

suspension
The RAM 2500 Heavy Duty is a step
up in terms of towing capacity, pushing
up to 17,980 pounds.
But the ride is kept in glide mode,
thanks to a choice between two segment-exclusive rear suspensions for
best-in-class ride and handling: a fivelink coil system or air suspension system. The five-link coil design provides
better transaction over obstacles than a
leaf spring system, and the robust coil
springs are more than up to the task of
handling the heavier loads.
In the rear air-suspension system,
an air bag replaces the coil spring,
much like on the RAM 1500, but load
capacity benefits from to the design,
which also brings load-leveling capability to automatically detect loads
on the rear suspension from a trailer
or payload.
Up front, the RAM Heavy Duty
line stays on target through an advanced three-link front suspension
to ensure greater roll stiffness. This is
particularly imperative in taller vehi-

cles, especially trucks hauling heavy

payloads. Roll stiffness is measured
during cornering by the amount the
trucks body tips side-to-side, independent of the wheels.
The RAM 2500 (as well as the 3500)
offer center-positioned ball-in-the-bed,
or fifth-wheel similar in appearance
to a tractor-trailer connection, capability. And the hitch n go Towing Prep
Package can handle most any necessity.
Whats more, the RAM features an inbox connection junction and a standard
Class-5 receiver hitch with a four- and
seven-pin connector on the bumper.
Dual alternator systems are also offered
on the heavy-duty pickups, providing
additional power for more electrical
loads from commercial vehicle upfits
and accessories.
Taking an additional step up to the
RAM 3500, which is of particularly
high demand in the rugged Rocky
Mountain region, further adds to the
capabilities. Towing capacity nearly
doubles to 31,210 pounds and payload
maxes out at 7,390, which amounts to
almost four tons.

tampered with or the door
is opened, but many people
have become desensitized
to car alarms because of the
frequency of false alarms
from car owners setting the
alarms off themselves. Therefore, they may no longer be as
effective as they once were. In
addition, many thieves can
disarm an alarm in a matter
of seconds.

hood and
tire locks
Locks that are installed
on different parts of the
car or truck can also deter
thieves. A hood lock stops a
potential thief from getting
under the hood and gaining
access to the engine and wiring. Tire locks are special devices that require a unique
tool to remove the tire. This
can help prevent tire theft
and may give thieves pause
as to what other anti-theft
devices are on the car.

tracking
devices
There are devices, like
Lojack, that are designed
to pinpoint the position of
a car. It uses FM radio frequencies to help police recover the car. Some people
also purchase after-market
GPS devices that will show
their vehicles location on a
computer or smartphone.

onstar
This system was originally designed to be a
crash-notification system,
but it now offers other
helpful services. Individuals can use OnStar
for directions, to unlock
their vehicles and now to
slow down their cars and
trucks if they have been
stolen. OnStar comes preinstalled on many General
Motors cars.

the hood to power the RAM 3500.

The 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel
I-6 is available in three versions. The
first version is paired with RAMs
segment exclusive six-speed manual
transmission, which features a wearcompensating clutch for lifetime likenew performance and a dual-trunion
shift tower in a compact shift pattern.
This delivers 350 horsepower at 2,800
rpm and 660 pound-per-feet of torque
at 1,500 rpm.
The second option matches the
Cummins to the 68RFE six-speed
automatic transmission to create
370 horsepower at 2,800 rpm with
800 pound-per-feet of torque at
1,600 rpm. And the 6.7-liter Cummins High-Output Turbo Diesel I-6
is paired with the Aisin six-speed
automatic transmission for highoctane work.
Delivering 385 horsepower at 2,800
rpm, the most powerful Cummins generates torque of 900 pound-per-feet at
1,700 rpm. The AS69RC transmission
features wide gear ratios that contribute to impressive shift performance,
efficiency and drivability.
The new offering also includes
standard Hill-Descent Control, borrowed from the Power Wagon. Hill-

Descent Control allows drivers to control speed down steep, rugged grades
with the buttons on the column shifter without the need for throttle or
brake pedals.

off-road package
Being born for rugged terrain, the
pickups have a 4x4 off-road package
that comes standard with a rear antispin differential, which turns both
rear wheels in tandem when increased
torque is applied. The design automatically unlocks the differential for
normal on-road driving, allowing the
wheels to spin independently for improved drivability.
When the altitude or heat starts
getting high, the RAM features another innovation, the industry-exclusive RAM Active Air intake system.
When the intake system senses extreme heat, it draws cooler air from
the front of the vehicle a function
that also engages at high altitudes
for superior throttle response in low
oxygen environments. When conditions are wet from snow, ice or water-fording, the system pulls air from
an under-hood inlet, clear from snow
packing and water.

continued from page 1

allow for ample

time to get to your
destination
Feeling rushed on the way to
an appointment or event may encourage risky road behavior or
make you more likely to quickly
lose your patience with fellow motorists. Allow for plenty of time to
get where you need to go and you
may feel calmer and more in control should traffic spring up. Even
calling a party at your destination
and explaining the traffic situation can alleviate tension.

share your commute

Items to include in your automotive emergency kit

Commuters are more likely to

experience road rage than noncommuters, simply because they
tend to be on the roads each day
in the heart of busy traffic. Carpool with another person to break
up the driving responsibilities.
Sitting in the passenger seat a few
times per week may help keep
your aggression levels in check.

be prepared in the case of an accident or injury

oad trips can make for great weekend

getaways or even more lengthy vacations
for those who cant get enough of the open
road. But before embarking on any road trips, motorists should replenish their automotive emergency kits with the following items so they are fully
prepared in the event of an accident or an injury.

first-aid kit
A first-aid kit can treat cuts and abrasions suffered while you are out of the car and even some
minor injuries that may result if you are in a car accident. Include essential items like adhesive tape,
antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes, aspirin, bandages, a cold compress, gauze and scissors. Visit
www.redcross.org for a more extensive list of items to
include in your first-aid kit, which should be kept in
your car at all times.

tools
Its important to include tools in your automo-

tive emergency kit. While a full toolbox might be

unnecessary, bring along an adjustable wrench, a
flathead and Phillips screwdriver, a pair of pliers, a
tire jack and crow bar, an ice scraper and a flashlight.
Extra roadside flares and reflectors also should be
packed should you need to pull over and address
an automotive problem, such as a flat tire. Keep a
tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment or
with your other tools so you can check tire pressure
if you feel your car is not operating as smoothly as
it normally does.

fluids
While its best to check all of your vehicles fluids
before beginning a road trip, it does not hurt to bring
along some extra fluids just in case you start to run
low while out on the road. Fluids to pack include
motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, and windshield
washer fluid. Include a funnel with these items so
you can easily pour them in should you be running
low. Pack an empty spray bottle as well so you have
something to spray washer fluid from if a problem

arises with your wiper blades.

wiper blades

think before
reacting

Include an extra set of wiper blades in your automotive emergency kit. Maintaining wiper blades
is an oft-overlooked component of vehicle maintenance, so bring along an extra set of blades should
your existing blades succumb to wear and tear
while youre on the road.

Its tempting to yell or signal

to a driver that you are angered
by his or her reckless driving. But
take a few deep breaths before
reacting, and you may feel more
relaxed and more willing to let
things go.

miscellaneous items
Some items that may not seem synonymous
with road trips can come in handy should you find
yourself in an emergency. Pack a blanket so you and
your passengers can stay warm should your car
break down at night. In addition, pack some energy
bars and bottled water so no one gets too hungry or
thirsty while waiting for help to arrive. Its also good
to keep a pair of work gloves in your car so you can
still use your tools or change a tire when the temperatures dip or your hands get sweaty on hot days.

practice safe
driving habits
Set an example on the roadways by following the speed limit, driving courteously and yielding to drivers when necessary. Its
better to drive defensively at all
times than risk getting into an accident by driving aggressively.

Packing the car for a road trip can be complicated. Although the goal may be to cram
as much as possible into the car and get on
the road quickly, part of the safety plan for
this years adventure should include packing
properly to avoid injury.
Americans and Canadians combined drive
trillions of miles in any given year. Although
it is difficult to make a direct comparison between how many people choose driving as
opposed to flying, when comparing data from
the Federal Highway Administration and the
Bureau of Transportation Statistics, for every
mile Americans flew they drove about six
more in 2011. With so many miles clocked on
the road, it is essential to make the experience
as safe as possible -- and that means properly
securing belongings in a vehicle before getting
on the road.
In 2009, a laptop computer became a projectile that killed its owner. Heather Storey
of Surrey, British Columbia, was driving to
work when her vehicle was hit by a tow truck.
Her laptop was propelled at such a force that
it caused a deadly injury to her head. Unsecured or improperly packed items in a car

Consult the owners manual to determine
the proper tire pressure when the vehicle is
carrying a full load. This will not only help alleviate unnecessary wear and tear on the tires,
but also can help to prevent a tire blow-out.

It also is important to stay below the maximum permitted weight or maximum load capacity for the car or truck. Consumer Reports
says that the capacity for small SUVs can span
from 825 pounds to 1,155 pounds. Midsize
SUVs may carry anywhere from 900 pounds
to 1,405 pounds. Minivan capacities can vary
significantly as well. The load capacity is specified in the owners manual.

Auto Buying

Get the best

deal on an
auto loan
do you research
and be patient
to save money
long term

hanks to the high costs

of new automobiles,
many drivers now take
out loans when replacing their
existing vehicles. Such loans
make it possible for drivers to
purchase new vehicles they
may not have the cash to buy
outright, and making car payments on time each month is
a great way for consumers to
build their credit.
Drivers want to find great deals
on their cars, but they also should
make an effort to secure the most
consumer-friendly auto loan they
can find. Doing so can save drivers substantial amounts of money
over the course of their loans, and
finding a great deal is not as difficult as it may seem.

go to your lender
first and foremost
Loan shopping before car
shopping, as opposed to relying
on dealers to arrange the loan
once you find a car you want, can
help drivers secure better terms.
By prequalifying for a loan, consumers can then go to the dealership knowing exactly how much
they can spend, saving themselves time and easing nerves
some buyers may have about the
car-buying process.
Prequalifying with a bank,
credit union or online lender does
not lock buyers into those terms,
leaving them room to secure
even better deals by asking the
auto dealer to beat the terms of
their existing financing deals. Be
careful not to apply for too many
loans when loan shopping, as
each application will lower your
credit score.

tips for finding and financing vehicles

clean up
your credit
Creditors take many things
into account when determining
loan terms, but perhaps no variable is more important than an applicants own credit history. If your
credit history is bumpy or you
are currently carrying substantial
debt, pay off as much of your debt
as possible before applying for an
auto loan. Even if your credit history is not great, you may be in line
for better loan terms if you have
paid off your consumer debt and
recently indicated you are capable
of making monthly payments for
an extended period of time.

Lenders compete with one another, and consumers can use that
to secure the best possible loan
terms. If one lender gives you loan
terms that you find attractive, resist the temptation to sign on the
dotted line right away. Sleeping
on it and taking the terms to the
lenders competitors or even auto
dealers may ultimately result in
you landing even better terms.

is it in your budget?

know the terms

of the loan
before you drive
off the lot
Some financing terms may be
classified as contingent, which
means the terms can change even
after drivers take cars off the lot.
That may mean higher interest
rates or lengthier loans, which can
cost drivers considerably more
money in the long run. Drivers
can avoid that fate by waiting until the terms have been finalized to
accept the car and take it home.
Auto loans make it possible
for millions of drivers to purchase
new and reliable automobiles.
Savvy borrowers who take the
time to secure the best loan terms
can save themselves substantial
amounts of money and still drive
the cars of their dreams.

here are many factors to

consider when purchasing a
new car. It is crucial to consider
your budget, an accommodating size
and various comfort and safety features. The average car loan will require
payments for five years. It is important to determine that any upcoming
life changes will be compatible with a
vehicle that you will likely have long
after the loan is repaid.
The good news is, youre not alone in
this decision. It is in your local dealers
best interest to ensure that you are purchasing a car that will meet your needs.
Here are some questions to ask to get the
best car for your life.

Besides your initial investment of

a down payment plus monthly payments, make sure that you can afford

regular maintenance on your new vehicle. Your dealerships salesman or

local parts store will be willing to do
research to determine the cost of regular maintenance for your new vehicle.
Theres a large cost difference between
oil changes for a truck with a diesel engine and a standard passenger car that
uses gasoline. Its important to know
these cost differences before you commit to a five-year loan.

does your new car fit

your family?
A sleek body style and extra horsepower under the hood can be tempting
to anyone. But if you have small children, you know that convenience is second to none. Perhaps, a two-door coupe
isnt the best vehicle for you if youre
constantly shuttling kids around town.
If you have children or are consid-

ering adding to your family, a sedan or

minivan may be your best bet. These
will supply comfort and convenience
for your budding family. If youre concerned about gas mileage, consider a
small or crossover SUV.

do you need extras?

Your new car may come with extras
that you never considered, but these extras
come at additional costs. Ask yourself if
you need the extra towing package. Sure it
can be handy, but if you have never considered hauling a trailer, then its probably an
extra that you dont need.
Another extra is four-wheel drive. If
you live in an area that experiences tough,
snowy winters, four-wheel drive will
probably be beneficial. If you dont plan
on driving in snow or off-roading, however, youre safe to bypass this pricey option
that can also cost you in gas mileage.

Fall is a good time to buy

take advantage
of end - of - year

sales , incentives

ew models, quotas
and the holidays are
just a few reasons
why dealerships offer
the best deals at years end. There are
many incentives a dealer can obtain
if they are able to hit the numbers
that are set for them. Might as well
help them help you.
Fall ushers in the last few months of
the year. Car dealers and manufacturers
are in a frenzy to finish the year strong.
Traditionally, the first few months of a
new year are slow ones in the car sales
department, making it a necessity for
local dealers to boost their end-of-year
sales to get through the slow months.

capitalize on leftover
inventory
You will likely grab a great deal on a
new vehicle by waiting for late summer
and early fall. This is generally when
dealerships are rolling the years newest
models into their showrooms, meaning
they begin marking down last years
models to unload inventory. Out with
the old, in with the new is a practice for
dealerships during the fall season. Its in
your best interest to take advantage.

holiday sales
Car dealerships have jumped on
the Black Friday shopping phenomenon. Great deals can be found the day
after Thanksgiving and the weeks im-

mediately afterward as manufacturers

offer reduced pricing on new models.
Other than great prices, be on the lookout for financing deals and various rebates that can make a big difference in
your final cost.

smart spending
Consider getting a big purchase like
a new car out of the way before the
holidays tighten your wallet. Taking
advantage of sales in September or October can give you plenty of time to readjust your budget for Christmas gifts.
If your current vehicle isnt the most
reliable machine, a new vehicle can give
you peace of mind that youll safely get
where youre going during the busy holiday travel season.

Buying your
first hybrid

ybrid vehicles have been growing in popularity thanks to their

reputation of being better for the environment and their great fuel economy. If
youre considering making your first hybrid
vehicle purchase, there are a few factors that
to keep in mind.
Owning a new hybrid isnt all great gas
mileage and a lower carbon footprint. Maintaining a new hybrid car can be expensive, so
its important to understand what youre getting into before signing the final sales contract.

what is a hybrid vehicle?

a hybrid vehicle generally uses

two different powertrains
typically a gasoline engine
along with an electric motor.

A hybrid vehicle generally uses two different powertrains typically a gasoline engine along with an electric motor. By working together, they are able to consume less
fuel by allowing the gasoline engine to carry
less of the load.
Regenerative braking is one of the signature features of a hybrid vehicle. When you
apply your brakes, it causes the electric motor
to run backwards in order to stop the vehicle.
While the motor is in reverse mode, it feeds
electricity to the batteries. This system is one
of the most unique features of hybrid vehicles
on the market today.

gas mileage
Toyota boasts that its new 2016 Prius will
get an average of 54 miles per gallon. While
some hybrids may get lower mileage than the
Prius, the numbers are still much higher than a
conventional gasoline vehicle.
While youre getting more bang for your
buck at the pump, also know that youll get
less power from a hybrid than you would a
conventional engine. Gasoline engines will
accelerate considerably faster and offer more
horsepower. Consider this major difference
when making your decision.

maintaining a hybrid
Possibly the biggest issue related to owning a hybrid vehicle is the cost of maintenance.
Replacing a hybrid battery can cost thousands
of dollars. Fortunately, car manufacturers usually offer great protection on the hybrid components, so make sure to understand what kind of
warranty youre getting.
When it comes to a hybrid, a good rule of
thumb is to go back to your local dealer for
repairs. Their mechanics have been trained
on the complexity of a hybrid engine and will
have special tools for repairs.

hen it comes to purchasing

a new car, a good credit score is
one of the most important weapons you can have in your arsenal. Thats
because more than 85 percent of American
consumers rely on financing to obtain a new
vehicle, according to Experians 2016 State of
the Automotive Finance Market report.
Bad credit can lead to no financing. Good
credit, however, shows lenders that you are reliable when it comes to making payments on
time, which leads to a better chance of securing
a loan. Besides that, a better credit score usually
means a lower interest rate.
A simple online search will reveal many
sites where you can check your credit score
before you begin your search for your dream
car. If your credit score is less than perfect, there
are some simple ways to improve it. A good
rule of thumb is to consider your credit score
as important as your driving record. Both can
greatly improve or hinder your everyday life.

lower your credit

card debt
The 2015 American Household Credit Card
Debt Study found that the average American
household carries a credit card debt of $15,762.
The easiest way to cut down on your credit
card debt is to start with the smaller outstanding balances. Once you resolve a smaller debt,

start applying that money toward a card with

a larger balance. Obviously youre not going to
overcome your debt overnight, but by cutting
out smaller debts, the extra money will make
your larger debts look less intimidating.

sure your bills are paid first.

card properly
An active credit card shows lenders that
you are in control of your credit. How you
use credit cards can be the most beneficial or

The trick is to pay your balance off in full before your due date. A months worth of gas

Shopping for a new auto insurance policy

any motorists consider

auto insurance a necessary evil. While drivers
dont want to be out on the road without
insurance, many lament paying such a
high price for security. But automotive
insurance does not need to be so expensive. In fact, many drivers on the road
today could save a considerable amount
of money if they took some time to explore their options.
While it might be easier to simply stick
with an existing policy, some simple comparison shopping might result in a much
more affordable auto insurance bill. But
before you begin shopping for a new policy, it may help to consider a few factors
that might decipher just how affordable
your next policy will be.

several factors

til theyre officially off your record before

shopping for a new policy. The fewer
points you have, the less youre likely to
pay for auto insurance. So be patient if
points are about to vanish or be proactive
and find yourself a better deal if points
recently came off your record.

personal finances
Your individual credit score will influence how much you pay to insure your
vehicle. If your credit rating is strong, then
this should help you find a more affordable policy. But if your credit rating has
recently faltered or you currently have a
significant amount of debt, then work to
improve your credit score and reduce your
debt before shopping for a new policy.

While your employment situation

wont have too big an impact on the cost
of your insurance, finding a new job thats
closer to home, which remains a goal for
many professionals, may just lower the
cost of your auto insurance. Insurance
companies consider a host of factors when
determining the cost of each auto insurance policy, and the distance between a
drivers home and his or her office is one
of those factors. If youre in the midst of
a job hunt that you hope will end with
a new job and a shorter daily commute,
then you might want to wait before signing the dotted line on a new auto insurance policy.
An adequate insurance policy gives
motorists peace of mind as they traverse the nations roadways. Finding
a more affordable policy is a goal for
many motorists, who must consider
several variables before they begin the
search for a new policy.

find insurance is more affordable at your
new location than your current one. Rural
areas and the suburbs tend to have fewer
drivers on the road than more densely
populated urban locales, so insuring a
vehicle in such areas is often more affordable than insuring a vehicle within city
limits. If you will soon be leaving city life

Costly motor oil myths debunked

misconceptions
may be costing
you money

hen it comes to taking

care of their vehicles,
many motorists prefer to be
overly cautious. While thats not necessarily a bad thing, there are times when
being too cautious can unnecessarily
cost you money.
Motor oil, and when to change that
oil, has long been a point of contention.
Many drivers grew up being told that
motor oil should be changed every 3,000
miles. However, that myth has been debunked for many of todays vehicles,
which should come with suggested intervals between oil changes. According
to Edmunds.com, in 2010 the average
interval for oil changes was 7,800 miles.
In addition to changing a cars motor
oil less frequently, there are other things
drivers should know about motor oil.

oil does not necessarily

need to be changed
before a long trip
While its good to have your car examined before embarking on a trip, if
the recommended oil change interval is
not up, then you do not need to preemptively change your oil. Such a change is

likely unnecessary and will not improve

the performance of your vehicle during
the trip.

black oil does not

necessitate a change
Conventional wisdom once suggested if the oil on the dipstick is black then
it needs to be changed. But nowadays
automotive professionals are noting that
black oil is doing its job and different additives might be changing the oils color,
which means the oil doesnt need to be
changed.

you can use petroleumbased oil after using

synthetic
Another longstanding myth regarding motor oil was that once you use a
synthetic motor oil instead of a petroleum-based oil you have to continue
using synthetic oil, which is often more
expensive than more traditional motor
oil, in order to avoid harming the vehicle. However, automotive professionals
have noted that these two types of oils
are now often blended, meaning switch-

ing back and forth from one to the other

is not likely to cause any damage to your
vehicle. Just be sure to use motor oil that
meets the standards set forth in your vehicles owners manual.

invest in a roof
rack or cargo box
Only place light items on the
roof of the car so you can free up
interior space. Secure roof items
tightly, as they will be caught by
the updraft while driving and
you do not want to send them
airborne and onto the roadway.
Also, if you do use the roof for
storage, be aware of how much
taller the items will make your
vehicle so you know if you can
safely drive beneath underpasses.

consider an earlier oil

change after buying a
new vehicle
Sometimes a new vehicle will need
an oil change after its first 3,000 miles.
However, this does not mean your vehicle will need one every 3,000 miles.
According to Blackstone Laboratories,
who study motor oil, oil samples taken
from engines during their initial 3,000
miles of driving had elevated metal levels from the camshafts and pistons.
These elevated levels will not necessarily be harmful, but some auto manufacturers recommend a shorter initial
interval just to be safe. Honda, however, includes an anti-wear additive in
their break-in oil and advises against
changing their oil early. Consult your
owners manual to determine if its
best to change your oil after the initial
3,000 miles or to let it go until the recommended interval.

make sure
passengers can be
seated safely
Packing a car doesnt always
mean being able to fit suitcases
and belongings. It also means
ensuring passengers can ride
safely. Do not seat more passengers than can be restrained by
the seat belts in the car. If there
is not enough room, it is safer in
the long run to take two cars.

ehicle engines rely on many

components to run efficiently, and motor oil is just one
of the things that can affect how
well engines run.
Motor oil serves to reduce wear on moving parts. Oil also cleans, inhibits corrosion,
improves sealing and cools the engine by

manufacturer has its own recommendations

Vehicles receive many oil changes over

Pre-owned Vehicles

Tips for pre-owned vehicle buyers

he impression of used cars and trucks

has changed dramatically in recent
years. Now widely referred to as pre-owned
vehicles, such automobiles are now the first choice
of many buyers who want reliable vehicles without
having to pay full sticker price.
While buying pre-owned vehicles is less risky
today than it might have been two decades ago,
there is still some risk for buyers who purchase cars
that are not brand new. The following tips can help
motorists find pre-owned vehicles that suit their
needs and budgets.

research , use
tools to get best
vehicle for you

do your homework
Drivers rarely buy brand new vehicles without
first researching the makes and models they are considering. Whether they are checking a vehicles safety
ratings, gas mileage or warranty terms, buyers know
that such research is essential to making the most informed decisions. Preowned vehicle buyers should
be just as diligent as new car buyers, researching the
vehicles initial assessments and ordering a vehicle
history report to determine if a vehicle theyre considering has been in any accidents and how many drivers have previously owned the car. Buyers also should
research manufacturer warranty terms to determine

whether the original warranty is still in place or if they

will need to purchase a new one.

develop a
realistic budget
Budgets are important whether buyers are purchasing brand new or preowned vehicles. But while new
car buyers can reasonably expect their maintenance
costs to remain low for a few years, preowned vehicle
buyers, especially those purchasing cars without warranties, should expect to deal with repairs sooner than
they would if they were buying brand new cars.
Leave some room in your budget for repairs and
then look for vehicles that fit your budget. Maxing
out your budget could prove disastrous if your car
needs repairs sooner than expected, and if repairs
are a long way off, you are still saving money.

make sure you are getting the

best price
Preowned vehicle prices may be more flexible
than the prices of brand new cars, but its still up
to buyers to ensure theyre getting the best price.
Resources such as Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.
com) and the Edmunds.com True Market Value

(TMV) pricing tool can help buyers make the

best buying decisions. Using such resources is
quick and easy and can help buyers quell any
concerns they might have about overpaying for
preowned cars or trucks.

insist on a pre-purchase
inspection for vehicles not
designated as certified preowned vehicles
Before making an offer on a preowned vehicle,
buyers should insist on a pre-purchase inspection
performed by their own mechanics. Such inspections are not necessary when buying certified preowned vehicles from dealerships because such certifications are only granted when manufacturers or
other certifying authorities have inspected the vehicles before they were offered for sale.
If private sellers or dealers selling uncertified
pre-owned vehicles resist your efforts to get a prepurchase inspection, walk away and continue your
search elsewhere.
Preowned vehicles no longer carry the stigma
they once did, and savvy buyers can find great
deals on reliable pre-owned automobiles.

Pre-owned Vehicles

What to look for in a vehicle history report

vehicle history report can be a usedcar buyers best friend. Whereas in the
past buyers bought used cars and hoped for
the best, todays used car buyers can rely on a vehicle
history report to tell them all about the vehicle while
helping buyers make more informed decisions.
When shopping for a pre-owned vehicle, you
should always ask for a vehicle history report, regardless of whether youre buying from a dealership or a private citizen. If the seller refuses, its
time to look elsewhere. When a seller eagerly provides a vehicle history report, buyers should examine a few things on the report so they can be
more comfortable should they ultimately purchase
the vehicle.

recognize red
flags to avoid
issues

number of previous owners

All vehicle history reports list how many owners
a vehicle has had in the past. In general, the more
owners a vehicle has had, the more risk youre assuming as the buyer.
Vehicles that tend to change hands often are less
likely to have been well maintained.
In addition to how many owners a car has had,
look at who those owners were. Vehicles that were
once owned by a rental car company, for instance,
were likely not treated very well, as few people care

how much abuse their rental car endures.

However, a car once owned by a rental agency
likely has lots of highway miles on it, and such
driving is less taxing on a vehicle than city driving
where the vehicles engine is stopping and starting
more frequently.

specifics
Just because a seller provides you with a vehicle
history report does not necessarily mean that report
matches up with the vehicle you might be buying.
A dishonest seller might try to pass off the history
report of another vehicle of the same make and
model as his own.
This is done to hide a suspect vehicle history
or even when thieves are selling a stolen car to an
unsuspecting buyer. Check the vehicle identification number, or VIN, on the vehicle to ensure the
car youre looking at matches the car on the history
report. In addition, each vehicle history report describes the car, so if the description does not match
you might be holding an inaccurate report.

location
The vehicle history report will show where the
car has lived over the years. Vehicles that have

spent ample time in harsh weather, such as Alaska

or another region with a prolonged winter, have
likely had their share of weather-related wear and
tear, more so than a car driven in warmer climates.
While this does not mean past owners didnt properly maintain the car, some buyers might be wary
of purchasing a vehicle that has endured too many
harsh winters.

physical appearance
Make sure the physical appearance of the car
matches up with its history report. Sometimes a vehicle owner does not report when a car has been in
an accident. Owners might do this to avoid higher
insurance premiums or to mask the vehicles history because they intend to sell the car down the road.
If a car exhibits any signs of bodywork that arent
on its history report or if the car drives awkwardly
but has supposedly not been in an accident, buyers
should consider this a major red flag and strongly
consider walking away from the vehicle and continuing their search elsewhere.
A vehicle history report can calm the fears of a
buyer shopping for a preowned vehicle. But even
when a report is made available, buyers should still
examine the report closely to ensure the vehicle is
all its cracked up to be.

Auto Resale Value

Simple steps
to a clean
car interior
pristine interior can
boost resale value

uch like curb appeal improving the chances of a

sale on your home, having
a car that is presented well inside and
out may boost the amount of money
and potential of a resale on your vehicle. Even vehicle owners who dont anticipate selling their vehicles in the near
future should maintain the vehicles to
ensure they are safe and sound.
After home and work, a car is where
many people spend most of their time.
As a result, a vehicle can easily become
soiled, scratched or overrun with clutter. Maintaining the interior of your
vehicle doesnt need to take much time
or effort, but it should be done often
enough to keep on top of the mess.
Here are a few simple steps to get your
car interior up to snuff.

remove clutter
The first step in cleaning the interior is
to remove the excess items that may have
accumulated in the car. Busy families tend
to leave toys, books or clothing in their vehicles. There also may be discarded food
wrappers or beverage containers. People
who commute also may accumulate a
number of items in their cars, including
business materials. These items should be
sorted through and put where they belong
before tackling the rest of the cleaning work.

boost auto
resale value

vacuum
Much of the dirt and debris that accumulates in vehicles can easily be removed with a vacuum. A shop vac will
have enough power to thoroughly clean
upholstery and mats. If you do not have
one, visit a self car wash.
Remove the floor mats and set them
on a flat surface. Thoroughly vacuum
the mats to clear them of dust, dirt, food
crumbs, and any other debris. Vacuum
the floor of the car as well as any seat
upholstery that may be a catch-all for
crumbs. Using a soft-bristled vacuum attachment, you also can remove dust from
the vents, speakers and the center console
of your vehicle .

Get the best trade-in deal

spot cleaning
Spills and stains do occur in vehicles, just as they do elsewhere. Cleaning these stains may require a little
elbow grease and a cleansing agent.
Most automotive supply stores will sell
an upholstery cleaner designed for car
interiors. You also can use a mixture of
laundry detergent and water applied
with a slightly damp rag or sponge. Go
over each area that is soiled so you can
devote adequate time to each stain. The
same process can be used on the vehicles carpeting. Use a brush to really
clean heavily soiled areas.
Leather upholstery can be more delicate than cloth upholstery. When cleaning
a leather interior, use only products that
are designed specifically for leather so as
to avoid damaging the interior.

research vehicle
value to avoid
blind negotiations

f its time to purchase a new car, it

may also be time to upgrade your current vehicle to maximize its trade-in value.
There are many ways to make this happen.
In addition to a down payment, a good price on
your trade-in can greatly lower the total amount
that you will ultimately owe for your new vehicle.
Its important to research your vehicles value so
youre not negotiating blindly when its time to
close the deal.

research
A good way to get a great handle on the trade-in
value of your car is to check with a resource like Kelley Blue Book. You can use the companys database
to find a rough estimate of what a dealer may offer
for a trade-in. Answer the websites questions honestly to give yourself the most accurate value.
Dealers are experienced in this department
and know what theyre looking for when valuing
a trade-in. Its easy to be discouraged if you are
offered less than you are expecting, so having a realistic value in mind is critical to keeping you on
track at the dealership.

console and
dashboard detailing
A barely moist cloth can be used to
clean the plastic components of the dashboard and consoles of the vehicle. The
goal is to wipe away any dust and any
minor stains or sticky areas without saturating important electrical components. It
is always better to spray polish or cleaning agents on your cloth than directly on
the dashboard. In hard-to-reach-areas,
consider using a soft-bristled paintbrush
or cotton swabs to clean in crevices. Wipe
down everything with a dry cloth or towel
afterward.

type of wax , technique are key

Having clean windows is essential to

driving safely. Cleaning the windshield
and windows is relatively simple to do
with a glass cleaner spray and a lint-free
cloth. Use caution when cleaning the rear
windshield if it has a defogger/defroster
grid on the window. These wires can be
damaged easily. Clean with the direction
of the defroster grid lines.

Place an air freshener or spray a

product on the air intake vent to eradicate musty smells in the car. It also is
important to replace the cabin air filter
periodically, otherwise you could be
breathing in dust and dander that is
trapped in the filter.
These are the basic steps to cleaning
a cars interior. Other detail work can be
done depending on your preferences and
the make of the car. Routine maintenance
helps others see you have pride in your
vehicle and can ensure a better return
on your investment down the line if you
choose to sell.

The impression your vehicle makes on the dealer

is up to you. Make sure to spend some time scrubbing the exterior and vacuuming the interior. It may
not be a bad idea to hire a local professional detail
company to really make it shine.
Many of these detail companies also work for
dealerships, sprucing up vehicles before theyre
sold. They will have a good understanding of how
to beautify your vehicle when you tell them youre
taking it in for trade.

mechanical issues
Apart from the appearance, you will benefit from
correcting any minor mechanical problems your car
is experiencing. If youre hearing noises from under
the hood, that may be unattractive to a dealer looking to re-sell. Have a local expert take a look and give
you advice on which repairs are most pressing.
Knowing about these minor issues will give you
an upper hand when negotiating. You can refer to
your mechanics repair quote, letting your dealer
know exactly what type of work is required to get
the vehicle into top shape. Its important to research
your vehicles value so youre not negotiating blindly when its time to close the deal.

Waxing your car 101

windows

freshen the car

give your vehicle

some tlc

axing a car is a great way to maintain its exterior. Including waxing

as part of your routine vehicle maintenance can protect the car or truck from some
natural hazards, including sun damage, pollen,
dirt and grime that can accumulate on a car
over time.
Motorists unfamiliar with waxing may be intimidated by the sheer volume of waxes on the
shelves at their local automotive supply stores,
which will no doubt offer an array of both liquid
and paste waxes as well as many spray waxes.
When testing waxes in 2013, Consumer Reports
found that liquid and paste waxes were relatively equal with regard to their effectiveness, while
spray waxes were very convenient though not
very durable.
Waxing a vehicle is no small task, and drivers
should learn as much as they can about car wax
and the different types of waxes before attempting
the job themselves.

the differences
between waxes
In their study of liquid, paste and spray wax-

es, Consumer Reports found that paste waxes

were easier to apply than liquid waxes, but that
the overall performance of paste waxes fell short
of liquid waxes. Liquid waxes were very durable
and provided the gloss many motorists look for
when waxing their vehicles. But liquid waxes
were difficult to apply evenly, something first
timers should consider when choosing a wax.
Spray waxes were convenient and easy to use,
and many can be wiped off without drying. But
Consumer Reports found spray waxes were not
as durable as liquid or paste waxes, so they may
need to be applied more frequently.
Because waxing is done to protect a car and
improve its appearance, its important that drivers waxing their vehicles for the first time test
the wax on an area of their vehicles that is not
easily seen to the naked eye. This affords some
room for error as you learn the waxing ropes
while also allowing you to test out different
waxes until you find the right fit.
There are some additional tricks drivers
can employ when waxing their vehicles that
can make the job easier and the wax that much
more effective.

wash first, then wax

Make sure you give your car or truck a good
wash before you apply any wax. Allow the car to
dry completely before applying any wax.

avoid sunlight
Consumer Reports notes that sunlight can soften
paint and make it susceptible to scratching, so avoid
washing and waxing your car in direct sunlight.

use microfiber towels

Microfiber towels were found to be more effective than cloth rags at removing residue. In addition, cloth rags can trap dirt and scratch finishes,
so opt for lambs wool gloves instead.

go from top to bottom

The bottom of a vehicle is more susceptible to
grime, so work your way down when waxing so
you are not contaminating your towels. A contaminated towel increases the risk of scratching
your vehicles exterior.

transmission vehicles
Stick shifts are often less expensive than automatics, but thats not always the case, and
certain manufacturers, including BMW, tend
to charge the same price for their vehicles regardless of which type of transmission buyers choose. In the past, manual transmissions
were almost always a less expensive option
than automatic transmissions because they
were easier for manufacturers to install, which
enabled automakers to cut back on labor costs,
and those savings were passed along to consumers. While that difference in sticker price
might once have been significant, nowadays it
is often negligible, meaning buyers wont necessarily save substantial amounts of money by
opting for a stick shift.

As the popularity of manual transmission vehicles has waned, so, too, has their availability.
According to Edmunds.com, 67 percent of 2013
model-year vehicles were offered only with automatic transmissions. While it might be possible for buyers to still purchase such vehicles with
manual transmissions, that opportunity is not
guaranteed. Even if it is available, buyers will

shifts, or manual transmissions,
over automatic transmissions. Such
supporters of stick shifts tend to feel as though
a manual transmission engages drivers in
ways that an automatic one simply cannot,
making stick shifts more fun to drive than the
more staid, automatic alternatives.
While the fun factor associated with manual transmission vehicles may be difficult to
dispute, there are other commonly held beliefs about stick shifts that are far easier to
contest. The following are a few things about
todays manual transmission vehicles that
might surprise even the most ardent automotive enthusiasts.

likely have to pay a premium price to order such

custom-made automobiles, and it takes longer to
deliver such vehicles than it does when buyers
simply buy a car already on the lot.

stick shifts may not be

expensive to maintain
Some drivers of manual transmission vehicles like to bemoan the costs of replacing the
clutch on their vehicles, and that raises some
concern among buyers considering a stick
shift. But skilled stick shift drivers need not be
worried about constantly replacing the clutch,
which tends to be most in need of replacement
when novice drivers struggle to get the hang
of a manual transmission.
In addition, manual transmissions are often
much less expensive to replace than automatic
transmissions. Skilled stick shift drivers who
can deftly downshift also often note the positive long-term effect that such a practice has
on their brake pads and rotors, which can last
considerably longer on vehicles with manual
transmissions than those with automatic ones.

stick shifts may not repel

car thieves or cost less
to insure
Because vehicles with manual transmissions require more skill to drive than automatics, some feel as though this deters car thieves,
who may not know how to drive stick shifts.
But there is no evidence to support this theory, nor any evidence to dispute it. And while
those who subscribe to this theory feel that
manual transmissions are therefore cheaper to
insure because they are at a decreased risk of
being stolen, that is also untrue.
While the standards used to determine the
price of an insurance policy vary between providers, many insurance providers view manual transmission vehicles as more risky because
they take longer to shift, stop and accelerate.
But manual transmissions also are less expensive to repair, and insurance companies consider that as well when determining the cost
of a policy. Such factors may cancel each other
out, and drivers will be left with an insurance
policy thats roughly the same as if the vehicle
included an automatic transmission.
