humanity'sbeliefinjustice,strengthenitsconfidenceinthenobilityofthehumansoulandsustainallourhopes
foragloriouslifeforall.
Allthisweowebothtoourselvesandtothepeoplesoftheworldwhoaresowellrepresentedheretoday.
Tomycompatriots,Ihavenohesitationinsayingthateachoneofusisasintimatelyattachedtothesoilofthis
beautifulcountryasarethefamousjacarandatreesofPretoriaandthemimosatreesofthebushveld.
Eachtimeoneofustouchesthesoilofthisland,wefeelasenseofpersonalrenewal.Thenationalmood
changesastheseasonschange.
Wearemovedbyasenseofjoyandexhilarationwhenthegrassturnsgreenandtheflowersbloom.
Thatspiritualandphysicalonenessweallsharewiththiscommonhomelandexplainsthedepthofthepainwe
allcarriedinourheartsaswesawourcountrytearitselfapartinaterribleconflict,andaswesawitspurned,
outlawedandisolatedbythepeoplesoftheworld,preciselybecauseithasbecometheuniversalbaseofthe
perniciousideologyandpracticeofracismandracialoppression.
We,thepeopleofSouthAfrica,feelfulfilledthathumanityhastakenusbackintoitsbosom,thatwe,whowere
outlawsnotsolongago,havetodaybeengiventherareprivilegetobehosttothenationsoftheworldonour
ownsoil.
Wethankallourdistinguishedinternationalguestsforhavingcometotakepossessionwiththepeopleofour
countryofwhatis,afterall,acommonvictoryforjustice,forpeace,forhumandignity.

Wetrustthatyouwillcontinuetostandbyusaswetacklethechallengesofbuildingpeace,prosperity,non
sexism,nonracialismanddemocracy.
Wedeeplyappreciatetherolethatthemassesofourpeopleandtheirpoliticalmassdemocratic,religious,
women,youth,business,traditionalandotherleadershaveplayedtobringaboutthisconclusion.Notleast
amongthemismySecondDeputyPresident,theHonourableF.W.deKlerk.
Wewouldalsoliketopaytributetooursecurityforces,inalltheirranks,forthedistinguishedroletheyhave
playedinsecuringourfirstdemocraticelectionsandthetransitiontodemocracy,frombloodthirstyforceswhich
stillrefusetoseethelight.
Thetimeforthehealingofthewoundshascome.
Themomenttobridgethechasmsthatdivideushascome.
Thetimetobuildisuponus.
Wehave,atlast,achievedourpoliticalemancipation.Wepledgeourselvestoliberateallourpeoplefromthe
continuingbondageofpoverty,deprivation,suffering,genderandotherdiscrimination.
Wesucceededtotakeourlaststepstofreedominconditionsofrelativepeace.Wecommitourselvestothe
constructionofacomplete,justandlastingpeace.
Wehavetriumphedintheefforttoimplanthopeinthebreastsofthemillionsofourpeople.Weenterintoa
covenantthatweshallbuildthesocietyinwhichallSouthAfricans,bothblackandwhite,willbeabletowalktall,
withoutanyfearintheirhearts,assuredoftheirinalienablerighttohumandignityarainbownationatpeace
withitselfandtheworld.
Asatokenofitscommitmenttotherenewalofourcountry,thenewInterimGovernmentofNationalUnitywill,
asamatterofurgency,addresstheissueofamnestyforvariouscategoriesofourpeoplewhoarecurrently
servingtermsofimprisonment.
Wededicatethisdaytoalltheheroesandheroinesinthiscountryandtherestoftheworldwhosacrificedin
manywaysandsurrenderedtheirlivessothatwecouldbefree.
Theirdreamshavebecomereality.Freedomistheirreward.
Wearebothhumbledandelevatedbythehonourandprivilegethatyou,thepeopleofSouthAfrica,have
bestowedonus,asthefirstPresidentofaunited,democratic,nonracialandnonsexistSouthAfrica,tolead
ourcountryoutofthevalleyofdarkness.
Weunderstanditstillthatthereisnoeasyroadtofreedom.
Weknowitwellthatnoneofusactingalonecanachievesuccess.
Wemustthereforeacttogetherasaunitedpeople,fornationalreconciliation,fornationbuilding,forthebirthof
anewworld.
Lettherebejusticeforall.
Lettherebepeaceforall.
Lettherebework,bread,waterandsaltforall.
Leteachknowthatforeachthebody,themindandthesoulhavebeenfreedtofulfilthemselves.
