Many gather to ponder end of Maya days
The calendar of the ancient civilization ends Dec. 21, 2012.

Hundreds of people gathered near the Golden Gate Bridge over the weekend to pond
er the enigmatic date of Dec. 21, 2012, the last day of the ancient Maya calenda
r and the focus of many end-of-the-world predictions.
In these times of economic distress, participants shelled out $300 each to atten
d the sold-out 2012 Conference, where astrologers, UFO fans, shamans and New Age
entrepreneurs of every stripe presented their dreams and dreads in two days of
lectures, group meditations, documentaries and, of course, self-promotion. Norma
lly, New Age platforms attract the interest of only the narrowest group of enthu
siasts. But this one has been generating wider audiences because it so forcefull
y underscores the turmoil of the times, as indicated by the stock market plunge,
Iran s nuclear ambitions, the Sept. 11 attacks, global warming and the possibilit
y of a magnetic pole shift and stronger sunspot cycles. To some, the end of the
Maya Long Calendar s roughly 5,000-year cycle portends calamity, or the birth of a
new age, or both.
The conference s slogan: Shift happens.
The gathering of about 300 people from as far away as Holland was launched with
the blessings of a Guatemalan shaman and the scary predictions of Jay Weidner, w
hose firm, Sacred Mysteries, has sponsored four 2012 events in the last six mont
hs. The greatest crisis in human history is unfolding all around us. It s not the e
nd of this world, but it s the end of this age, he likes to say. To survive the 21st
century, we re going to have to become a sustainable world people should want to
know how to pound a nail, milk a cow and grow their own food.
Now, a gold rush of 2012ology is underway. A similar conference in Hollywood this
year drew an audience of more than 1,000. At least two gatherings are planned fo
r the Los Angeles area in the spring. A Complete Idiot s Guide to 2012 was published
last month, adding to a burgeoning market of books, CDs and History Channel spe
cials suggesting that the ancient Maya predicted the impending end of the world
as we know it.
Director Michael Bay is set to make a movie titled 2012, based on a novel about mu
ltiple earths in parallel universes slated for destruction.
Stewart Guthrie, professor emeritus of anthropology at Fordham University, was n
ot surprised by the growing interest in newfangled notions about what those Maya
time keepers might have had in mind as far back as AD 200.
When events leave us feeling powerless and confused, we are more open to new clai
ms about the disorders of the world, he said. If people persuade enough others to
accept their answers to this crazy world, it can become a movement, for better o
r worse.
For example, the Gulf War and the Oklahoma City bombing boosted the popularity o
f doomsday predictions of famine, earthquakes and social tumult. Some were cobbl
ed from the spooky riddles and images in the Bible s book of Revelation, which sch
olars believe was actually written to help early Christians cope with their Roma
n oppressors.
In 1973, when the appearance of Comet Kohoutek coincided with a decision by memb
ers of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to announce an oil emba
rgo, the big question was whether the chunk of dirty ice hurtling through space
would be the most spectacular celestial sight of the century, or wreak social un
rest, tidal waves and earthquakes as claimed by some members of the New Age crow
d. As it turned out, Kohoutek fizzled and shot past Earth without incident.
Then there was the worldwide turn-of-the-century panic in the late 1990s that ha
d corporations spending millions on computer fixes, and people around the world
stocking up on Spam, water, batteries and energy bars.
The scene at the 2012 Conference here had the same giddy sense of urgency. Confe
rence co-organizer Sharron Rose said the Maya timeline foretold the most profound
event in human history. Everything we know, everything we are, is about to unde
rgo a substantial and radical alteration.
Exactly which direction to take, however, was unclear. The group is strikingly s
plintered, each focused on his or her own New Age theories: Spiritual teacher Jo
se Arguelles, for instance, contends that the Maya were prescient space aliens.
And author Daniel Pinchbeck describes 2012 as a time for the return of the Quetza
lcoatl, the mythical feathered serpent of Mesoamerica.
Maya researcher John Major Jenkins drew enthusiastic applause from the crowd wit
h a lecture in which he said that Maya hieroglyphics are rife with images of tre
es and animals that represent the center of the Milky Way galaxy and what he cal
led the Black Hole of Maya Creation mythology.
That kind of talk irritates Boston University s William Saturno, a leading authori
ty on the Maya, who did not attend the conference. Saturno dismissed the 2012 mo
vement as this year s Nostradamus.
The ancient Maya civilization flourished in southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salva
dor and Honduras, and lasted nearly 2,000 years from before the time of Jesus un
til the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. The culture s achievements included
soaring pyramids, a highly accurate calendar and intricately carved stone monume
nts.
I had a guy come into my office once to ask me a question about a specific Maya m
ural with a depiction of a hanging nest in it, he recalled. He claimed it was the
exact form of a Maya Black Hole. I said, Nah, I m thinking it s a bird nest.
These guys are loony and are making a buck in a market that has to be short-lived
, he added. And they will continue to do so right up until Dec. 21, 2012, when the
Maya calendar simply switches over like an odometer and everything is fine Davi
d Stuart, an art historian and Maya glyph expert at the University of Texas at A
ustin, agreed. He didn t attend the San Francisco event.
Looking back to the ancient Maya for answers to modern problems, he said, is not th
e best use of our time or brain cells. But astrological consultant Rick Levine, pr
esident and chief wizard of StarIQ.com, said such critics missed the point. Peop
le come to an event like this because they are hungry for information, he said. Yo
u don t need to be a New Ager to know there s a lot of weird things going on in the
world.

The Mayans
The Mayans, especially those who lived from 1200 B.C. to about 800-600 A.D., wer
e simple people who had few possessions. Interestingly, they were also master as
tronomers who were in possession of a highly complex and incredibly accurate cal
endar. St. Germain says they originally came from the Pleiades. Edgar Cayce said
that they were part of the last survivors of Atlantis who migrated to the Yucat
an from Atlantis 30,000 years ago, while that continent was being destroyed.
Their calendar, which has recently been decoded, is one of the most accurate we
have ever witnessed. One aspect of their calendar shows that the Earth revolves
around the sun in 365.2422 days; an accuracy that is just 2 seconds longer than
the time measured by today's atomic based clocks and sophisticated satellites. F
urthermore, how did the Mayans know about the planets Uranus and Neptune without
the aid of telescopes thousands of years before Western astronomers discovered
them? And, to this day, we still don't understand why that civilization suddenly
disappeared into the mist about 800 years ago.
More and more we're beginning to understand these people. And the emerging patte
rn tells us that the Mayans were very different than ourselves. They believed th
ey were living in the fifth age of the sun, with each age being approximately 51
28 years. Five of those ages totals 25,640 years, also known as the Great Year o
r Great Age, which is based upon the wobble of the Earth as it spins on its axis
. Each of the smaller ages within the Great Year ended with a cleansing of the p
lanet and civilization had to start over again.
Why did it have to start over again? It appears our ancestors were caught up in
the material ways of life, and placed little emphasis on the spiritual. The two
forces were way out of balance. Take a good look around planet Earth today. We'r
e repeating that same pattern again.
The final phase of the Mayan calendar began on July 26, 1992 and signifies a mom
ent in human destiny when time will be speeding up quite dramatically. One of th
e Mayan mandates for this time period is that those who are ready will be blesse
d and enlightened.
What makes the year 2012 more important than the individual 5 ages is that it is
also the end of the Great Age. And this does not include greater cosmic cycles
we don't fully understand at this point in time. As you will see, the channeled
information I've described below says something big is coming. In the Mayan sche
me of things we are already living in the last days of planet Earth as we've kno
wn it.
The Hopis
The Hopi, whose name means "people of peace," are proud and peaceful souls who l
ive a simple life balanced with the spiritual. They continue to farm the earth o
n their reservation in Arizona. They care for their land with sacredness and lov
e in spite of the pressures being put on them by greedy mining and energy compan
ies who are ripping apart the precious Hopi planting grounds. Some of the younge
r Hopi have given up hope, while the core Hopi remain faithful to their ancestra
l heritage.
The Black Mesa on which the Hopi reside is kept sacred by their hard work, praye
rs and ritual and fasting, which keeps their souls in balance and harmony. It co
ntinues to be their sacred place until the time of the Great Purification at whi
ch time they will be rejoined by the Great Spirit.
The Hopi tradition goes back many thousands of years. Within that tradition they
have kept sacred certain prophesies that would manifest just before a third Gre
at Purification, when the world would shake and when there will be much destruct
ion in order to cleanse the planet of the karmic negativity we have created whil
e serving as its caretakers. Here are some of the signs heralding the coming pur
ification telling us that it is near...
Trees everywhere will be dying (it's going on right now).
People will build a house a throw it in the sky (Skylab, Mir, the current space
station)
Cold places will become hot and hot places cold (that is happening with global w
arming, global weather patterns are changing)
Land will sink beneath the sea and rise above it (such changes have already begu
n)
The appearance of a blue star (in 1987 a blue star made its presence known when
a hot blue super-giant exploded and made world history as a spectacular supernov
a) There will be paths in the sky (airplane contrails and chemtrails) There will
be cobwebs in the air (power lines all over the United States)
A "gourd of ashes" will be dropped from the sky to burn the land and boil the oc
eans (atomic bomb)
These signs are pretty obvious and all have come to pass.
On the Hopi Reservation there is a picture story carved into a rock that is so s
acred to them no one is allowed to photograph it. Some outside the Hopi tribe ha
ve been allowed to see it and have drawn pictures of what they remembered. That
picture story is a diagram of a life plan that would guide them through this tim
e in history. A time when there will be much turmoil and destruction. It appears
that time is upon us.
The simple picture prophecy says there are two parallel paths for us to walk as
we make our choices. One is a path of darkness, while the other is a path of Lig
ht. We can move freely back and forth between each one for a long time (many liv
es) because the Great Spirit wants us to explore and experience different ways o
f life. But, a moment in history will arrive when we must make a final choice be
tween the two. That moment has arrived.
