ABSTRACT
Bad body odor is considered a great problem on the generation today especially because
of the continually arising global warming. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness
of calamansi, pure turmeric and cocoa powder as three main ingredients of deodorant. Calamansi
is known to deodorize and lighten darkened skin; Turmeric is an effective ingredient because of
its biochemical components while Cocoa is packed with potent antioxidants and contains various
essential nutrients. Consequently, it also aimed to determine which mixture is the best based on
the fragrance, deodorizing effect, sweating level, duration and presence of stains. In the case of
this product the researchers used pasteurized Calamansi extract to prolong the shelf life of the
product. Scented baby oil and cornstarch was also used as constant catalyst for the product.

Three mixtures were formulated and were tested to 10 students. One hundred percent of
the respondents favoured mixture 1 based on the fragrance, deodorizing effect and more than 12
hours duration. Furthermore, most of them observed that it reduced sweating and no stains.
Results were computed using one-way ANOVA, showing F value of 5.2182 and p value of
0.0156. Comparatively, the experiments showed that the study was significant.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This study provides information obtained through experimentation, regarding the
possibility of calamansi, turmeric, cocoa as the main ingredients of an organic deodorizer. This
study will pay particular attention on how to fight against body odor and on how to lighten dark
underarms and will highlight major strengths and weaknesses while offering some explanation
for observed changes.
Whats with calamansi, turmeric and cocoa?
Calamansi has a very distinct alkalinizing effect on the human body, with alkaline properties
present in the peel and juices of the fruit. The fruit can be used for whitening the skin, as well as
a bleaching agent on mild stains of white garments. Turmeric is a plant. Other names are
Curcuma aromatica, Curcuma domestica. Some people apply turmeric to the skin for pain,
ringworm, bruising, leech bites, eye infections, inflammatory skin conditions, soreness inside of
the mouth, and infected wounds. Itchy skin (pruritus). Early research suggests that taking a
specific product (C3 Complex) that contains curcumin, a chemical found in turmeric, and an
extract of black or long pepper (Bioperine) can reduce skin itching and improve quality of life in
people with chronic itching. Cocoa solids are one of the richest sources of flavanolantioxidants.
It has been suggested that the flavanols may take part in mechanisms such as nitric oxide and
antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiplatelet effects. Benefiting these mechanisms may
improve endothelial function, lipid levels, blood pressure, and insulin resistance.

With this process, we can solve our dilemma in fighting bad body odor. By conducting
experiments with three different mixtures, we can test whether it is significantly effective or not.
This is the very reason why the researchers are greatly challenged to conduct this investigation
on the efficacy of calamansi, turmeric, and cacao as the main ingredient of organic deodorizer.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The study intends to determine if calamansi, turmeric, and cocoa are effective in
removing bad body (especially underarms) odors and to asses which proper mixtures of
ingredients are more effective and can be used as deodorizer.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The researchers thought of an idea through their curiosity to use calamansi, turmeric, and
cocoa as main ingredients of an organic organizer to be an alternative in the absence of
commercially sold deodorant.
Calamansi has vitamin C which enhances your beauty, by rejuvenating skin from within
and thus bringing a glow on your face. That's because vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is
key to the production of collagen, a protein that aids in the growth of cells and blood vessels and
gives skin its firmness and strength. Based on the study, it is more effective if you apply
calamansi twice a day. The western medical community has been doing research into turmerics
antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, especially curcumin, a compound that gives
turmeric its dark yellow color, and its potential in the treatment of cancer and other diseases. But
in the East, turmeric has long been used for medicinal purposes. Cocoa solids are a mixture of
many substances remaining after cocoa butter is extracted from cacao beans. When sold as an
end product, it may also be called cocoa powder, cocoa, and cacao. In contrast, the fatty
component of chocolate is cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is 50% to 57% of the weight of cocoa
beans and gives chocolate its characteristic melting properties.
Thus, investigating this kind of research project makes the researchers scientifically
challenged and environmentally aware about the greater contribution of organic deodorant with
calamansi, turmeric, and cocoa as main ingredient.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

Can turmeric, calamansi and cocoa as the main ingredients of organic deodorantremoves

bad body odor?

Can this organic deodorizer be a good substitute for commercial deodorants?
What are the different significant effects of the different concentration of the organic
deodorant using turmeric, calamansi and cocoa as deodorizer?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

This study on calamansi, turmeric, and cocoa as the main ingredients of organic
deodorant is significant for it will help us solve our problem on how to fight against bad body
odour and on how to lighten dark underarms. Body odor is considered a great problem especially
to the generation today. The darkening of the skin is the problem that commercial deodorizers
commonly give and is a great dilemma for Filipino citizens. Even the young ones are
experiencing this too. Those students who are very active in school are prone to this problem.
This study will provide basic information on the possibility of turmeric, cocoa and
calamansi as the main ingredients of an organic deodorizer. The researcher brings out the present
relevance of our human resources, talents, skills, abilities and potentials especially to those who
are in doubts as the significant purposes this research project brings. It is noted that the finding of
the study will be the basis of other research study.Cocoa solids are one of the richest sources of
flavanol antioxidants. They are a key ingredient of chocolate, chocolate syrup, and chocolate
confections. It has been suggested that the flavanols may take part in mechanisms such as nitric
oxide and antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiplatelet effects. Benefiting these mechanisms
may improve endothelial function, lipid levels, blood pressure, and insulin resistance.
This is a great help for us because we can be assured that the product we are using is safe
for no chemicals has been added. Instead of buying commercially sold deodorant that are very
expensive, people can use this organic deodorant at a lower price.

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY:

1. Null Hypothesis

Turmeric, calamansi, and cocoa are not good mixtures that can be used as organic deodorizer.
There is no positive effect after using the organic deodorizer.
There are no significant effects in the different mixtures.

2. Alternative Hypothesis

Turmeric, calamansi, and cocoa are good mixture that can be used as organic deodorizer.
There is a positive effect after using the organic deodorizer.
There are significant effects in the different mixtures.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Calamansi or Citrfortunella microcarpa, is a citrus fruit closely related to the Mandarin
orange and Sweet orange. This fruit tree is a native plant species of the Philippines, and is used
in various ways. Calamansi has a very distinct alkalinizing effect on the human body, with
alkaline properties present in the peel and juices of the fruit. The fruit can be used for whitening
the skin, as well as a bleaching agent on mild stains of white garments. This fruit is widely
distributed across the island nation of the Philippines, and can easily be grown across the globe
in areas of temperate climates. Many soaps are made with calamansi as an active ingredient for
whitening and toning skin, however, the raw fruit can be used just as well for the same process. It
is sold cheap in the market and can be found in residential backyards as an ornamental plant.
This small fruit is known to be packed with Vitamin C. Calamansi is known to lighten darkened
skin. You can cut into half and rub it for 5-10 minutes on the area you want to whiten. Study
shows that it can visibly whiten the skin if you use calamansi it twice a day. Besides skin

lightening, you can also use this citrus fruit as a deodorizer. Calamansi when used will prevent

Calamondin has several alternative medicinal uses. When rubbed on insect bites, the juice
is said to relieve the itching and reduce the irritation. It can also be used as a natural acne
medicine or taken orally as cough medicine (often mixed with green tea), and is a natural antiinflammatory. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calamondin)
Turmeric is a plant. Other names are Curcuma aromatica, Curcuma domestica. You
probably know turmeric as the main spice in curry. It has a warm, bitter taste and is frequently
used to flavor or color curry powders, mustards, butters, and cheeses. But the root of turmeric is
also used widely to make medicine. Some people apply turmeric to the skin for pain, ringworm,
bruising, leech bites, eye infections, inflammatory skin conditions, soreness inside of the mouth,
and infected wounds. Itchy skin (pruritus). Early research suggests that taking a specific product
(C3 Complex) that contains curcumin, a chemical found in turmeric, and an extract of black or
long pepper (Bioperine) can reduce skin itching and improve quality of life in people with
chronic

itching.

The most important chemical components of turmeric are a group of compounds called
curcuminoids, which include curcumin (diferuloylmethane), demethoxycurcumin, and
bisdemethoxycurcumin. The best-studied compound is curcumin, which constitutes 3.14% (on
average) of powdered turmeric. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turmeric)
The cocoa or cacao tree (Theobroma cacao) is a small tree, native to South America but
now cultivated all over the world mainly in West African countries. The seeds, contained
within the trees large cacao pods, are used to make cocoa powder or chocolate. Cacao pods
weigh about half a kilo and contain up to 60 seeds which are used to make the chocolate we love
eating so much. Each seed also contain 40-50% cocoa butter, a wonderful botanical plant fat.
Long regarded as a food treat, cocoa is now used by some people as medicine. Cocoa seed is

used for infectious intestinal diseases and diarrhea, asthma, bronchitis, and as an expectorant for
lung congestion. The seed coat is used for liver, bladder, and kidney ailments; diabetes; as a
tonic; and as a general remedy. Cocoa butter is used for high cholesterol. Cocoa butter is also
very high in antioxidants including Vitamin E, which provide fantastic anti-ageing properties that
fight the activity of free radicals on your skin and help to keep your skin looking supple and
young. The antioxidants provide an added bonus by preventing cocoa butter from going rancid
quickly which means it has a lovely long shelf life (2-5 years) when stored in its basic form.

Chapter III
Methodology
This chapter presents the materials and ingredients used in the study, general procedures,
data collection and the statistical treatment.
3.1 MATERIALS AND INGREDIENTS
The main materials to be used are the Turmeric powder, Calamansi extract and
Cocoa Powder. There should be 1-4 pinches of Turmeric powder, 5-7 tablespoon of calamansi,
and 3-4 tablespoon of Cocoa powder. 5 tablespoons of Cornstarch, 2 tablespoons of baking
powder and 2 tablespoons of scented oil are also needed for the texture of the deodorant. One
mixing bowl and stirrer is needed for mixing the ingredients. Plastic containers are needed too
for storage of the finish product.
3.2 GENERAL PROCEDURE

First, make sure that the materials and equipment are complete and clean. When the
materials and equipment are complete and clean, start the procedure. Pasteurize calamansi
extract. To make the mixture 1 pour the 5 Tablespoons of Cornstarch on the bowl and 2
tablespoons of baking powder then pour 5 tablespoons of Calamansi. Stir the mixture. After
stirring, put 2 pinches of Turmeric powder and Cocoa powder, mix it completely. Add 2
tablespoons of scented oil to the mixture to produce a slimy effect to the deodorant.
To produce mixture 2 prepare the same set-up. Pour the 5 tablespoons of Cornstarch on
the bowl and 2 tablespoons of baking powder then pour 6 tablespoons of Calamansi. Stir the
mixture. After stirring, put 3 pinches of Turmeric powder and 1 tablespoon of Cocoa powder,
mix it completely. Add 3 tablespoon of scented oil to the mixture to produce a slimy effect to the
deodorant.
To produce mixture 3 prepare the same set-up. Pour the 5 tablespoons of Cornstach on
the bowl and 2 tablespoons of baking powder then pour 8 tablespoons of Calamansi. Stir the
mixture. After stirring, put 4 pinch of Turmeric powder and Cocoa powder, mix it completely.
Add 3 tablespoons of scented oil to the mixture to produce a slimy effect to the deodorant.

3.3 DATA COLLECTION

The experiment was conducted on the 11th of August 2015 in Siay National High School
Laboratory,Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay. To test and look for the possible effects of the deodorant
the three different mixtures of deodorant were given to 10 students. The 3

mixtures were

applied after they took a bath. On the next day the researchers asked the students on what they
have observed.. The researchers gathered the informations that the students gave them. Different
mixtures of the deodorant, the fragrance, the sweating effect, time duration, and the stains are the
indicators to test the efficacy of Turmeric powder, Calamansi extract and Cocoa Powder as the
ingredients to make an organic deodorant.

3.5 STATISTICAL TREATMENT

In analyzing the data gathered, the statistical techniques used was the Analysis of
Variance (ANOVA). Tables will be constructed to present the data.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

RESULT
The tables below showed the summary of the data gathered from the research and the
MEAN of the different mixtures.
TABLE 1.
.

Based on the table 10 out of 10 students that used the product liked the fragrance of the
deodorant and it lasted for more than 12 hours, majority of the students experienced less
sweating and no stains.

TABLE 2.

Based on the table 10 out of 10 students that used the product slightly liked the fragrance
of the deodorant and it lasted for more than 12 hours, majority of the students experienced
minimal sweating and less stains.

TABLE 3.

Based on the table 10 out of 10 students that used the product didnt like the fragrance of
the deodorant but it lasted for more than 12 hours, majority of the students experienced a large
number of minimal sweating and greater stains.

TABLE 4.

Based on the table and graph above for the summarized data for the 3 mixtures, Mixture
1 got the most favorable result. Comparatively, all the mixtures were very effective in lessening
the sweating, deodorizing effect and more than 12 hours duration.

DISCUSSION
Based on the experiment, it was seen that mixture 1 has the most effective mixture
containing 3 pinch of turmeric powder, 3 pinch cocoa, 7 tablespoons of calamansi extract.
However, the other 2 mixtures were also seen to have few good effects. Based on the result, out
of 10 students who tested the organic deodorant felt that their bad odor was gone and they also
said that their underarms sweat decreases. The result also shows that there was only few stains
left on their uniforms and that they like the smell of the product that lasted for a long period of
time. Based on the statistical data, our alternative hypothesis was accepted and our null

hypothesis was rejected because we got a P-value of 0.02 which is less than 0.05. This means
that the gathered data and results are significant.

CONCLUSION
We therefore conclude that Turmeric powder, Calamansi, and Cocoa powder can be used
as main ingredients in making an organic deodorant. Turmeric is widely used as medicine
applied to the skin for its anti- inflammatory components. Calamansi has Vitamin C, known to
lighten dark skin and also used as a deodorizer. Cocoa s very high in antioxidant including
Vitamin E, which provides fantastic anti- aging properties that fight the activity of free radicals
on the skin. In general these three are good agents in removing body odor and enhancing the
armpits color ,thus the most effective mixture is the first mixture which is the most preferred by
the students due to its fragrant, duration of deodorizing, less sweating and less stains.

RECOMMENDATION
From this very research,it was found out that Turmeric powder , Calamansi , and
Cocoapowder can be used as the main ingredients of an organic deodorant.Even in the 2nd and
3rd mixtures. You can also add essential oil to enhance/add fragrance. You can make also another
products out of the ingredients because of their properties such as facial cream, soap or liquid
deodorant. Further research using other uses of the ingredients was therefore recommended for
further study.
