Styles of dress change a lot, particularly in or near cities. In the last twenty years,
many people have begun to wear less formal clothes. Young people, particularly, like
to wear exactly what they want or what is comfortable, so jeans, T shirts and sweaters
have become very popular among the young 9and not so young) of both sexes.
Even at work, many people have stopped wearing formal clothes (suits and ties for
the men, dresses or skirts for the women) and have begun to wear casual clothes. In
fact, this casual look has become the fashion in recent years, and people pay quite
exorbitant sums of money to attain this look.
It is perhaps true to say that there is a greater choice today in fashion. However,
whether we want to dress in a casual or formal way, some people think we are still
slaves to the fashion of the day.
Taken from Contemporary English, by J. Taylor, R. Rossner, P. Shaw and J. Sheperd.
