BRIDGE DECK GRADE TRAINING

This course is an advanced training on bridge superstructure and


development of bridge deck grades. Course content will provide a review of
bridge types, superstructure elements, deck forming methods, and
determination of bridge deck grades. Included in the discussion of bridge
deck grade determination will be calculation & evaluation of deck grades,
deck grade adjustments, and important considerations associated with
establishment of final deck grades.

ESTABLISHING BRIDGE DECK GRADES


Specification Requirements: (PPCB and CWG bridges)
- Article 2526.01C requires that the contractor survey the as-built
abutment and pier beam seats and submit that information to the
Engineer for review prior to initiating erection of superstructure
elements. After the as-built beam seat elevations have been accepted,
the contractor lays-out and surveys the elevations of the top of
beams/girders and submits the survey information to the Engineer for
calculation of bridge deck grades.
- Not in the specifications, but recommended; On staged deck
construction, field survey the top of slab actual elevations of prior
stage near the longitudinal construction joint to compare with plan and
next stage deck grades. This survey check should be completed prior
to completing the substructure beam seats on the subsequent stage to
enable grade adjustments in the beam seats to be made if necessary.

Continuous Concrete Slab (CCS) Bridge:


- Since concrete slab bridges are constructed using temporary falsework
the deck does not experience dead load deflection until after all of the
deck has been placed, achieved required strength, and the falsework is
removed. NOTE: An exception is when the contractor uses temporary
steel beams through the span for the falsework which would need to
be handled similarly to a beam/girder bridge deck.
- For a concrete slab bridge the contractor constructs their falsework
and decking to the plan grade plus an allowance for dead load
deflection and formwork crush (ie: TOS slab thickness + dead load
deflection + formwork crush).

Pretensioned Prestressed Concrete Beam (PPCB) Bridge:


- Concrete beam bridges have camber fabricated into the beams to
allow for the dead load deflection from the deck placement. Concrete
beams will deflect during the placement of the bridge deck so the
bridge deck grades need to account for this.
- The contractor surveys the actual installed top of beam elevations at
the plan specified locations and submits this information to the
Engineer. The Engineer uses this actual elevation information to
compare to the theoretical top of beam (bottom of deck) elevation (ie:
TOS deck thickness + dead load deflection) to determine whether
the deck grades will be within the allowable maximum haunch and
maximum embedment.
- There are two methods used to calculate PPCB deck grades;
1) An Excel spreadsheet for calculation of bridge deck grades for
PPCB bridges is available on the DOT websites:

The spreadsheet is under Structures.
2) The plan Table of Beam Line Haunch Elevations is the plan
calculated theoretical bottom of bridge deck plus dead load
deflection. The elevations in this table can be used to compare
directly with the actual surveyed top of beam elevations to
determine haunch and embedment.

Continuous Welded Girder (CWG) Bridge:


- Steel girder bridges have camber fabricated into the girders to allow for the
dead load deflection from the deck placement. Steel girders will deflect
during the placement of the bridge deck so the bridge deck grades need to
account for this.
- The contractor surveys the actual installed top of girder elevations at the
plan specified locations and submits this information to the Engineer. The
Engineer uses this actual elevation information to compare to the theoretical
top of beam elevation (ie: TOS deck thickness + dead load deflection) to
determine whether the deck grades will be within the allowable maximum
haunch and maximum embedment.
- There are two methods used to calculate CWG deck grades;
1) The plan provides Top of Slab elevations, deck thickness, and dead load
deflection values at all top of slab locations. This information can be
used to determine the theoretical top of girder (bottom of deck)
elevations at all top of slab locations (ie: TOS deck thickness + dead
load deflection).
2) The plan Table of Beam Line Haunch Elevations is the plan calculated
theoretical bottom of bridge deck plus dead load deflection. The
elevations in this table can be used to compare directly with the actual
surveyed top of beam elevations to determine haunch and embedment.

CALCULATION STEPS

STEPS IN THE CALCULATION OF DECK GRADES FOR


BEAM/GIRDER BRIDGES
1) Determine method to use to calculate the theoretical top of
beam/girder (bottom of deck).
2) Calculate the theoretical top of beam/girder (bottom of deck).
3) Compare the actual surveyed top of beam/girder elevations with
the theoretical.
4) Define allowable maximum haunch and allowable maximum
embedment (minimum haunch).
5) Check calculated deck grades for excess haunch or excess
embedment.
6) Adjusting deck grades for excess haunch or excess embedment.
First make grade adjustments to ensure that all excess embedment
is eliminated (ie: typical allowable maximum embedment is inch
at the edge of beam/girder; this needs to be corrected by the cross
slope to set the limit at the center of beam/girder). Before
accepting the embedment adjustment check to ensure that the shear
connectors (ie: concrete beam shear hoops or steel girder shear
studs) do not project above the top mat of reinforcing in the deck.
Second make grade adjustments to reduce excess haunch as much
as possible and not exceed the allowable maximum embedment.
After all adjustments have been made, if there still are locations of
excess haunch then a supplemental haunch reinforcing bar must be
added to all shear stirrups/shear studs where excess haunch exists.
