TheAVIDCourseSyllabus

Itisimperativethatstudentsknowwhattoexpectinclass.Thepurposeofthissyllabusistooutline
ourexpectations,gradingrules,classproceduresandoutlineforthecourse.Wewilldoeverythingthatwecan
toensurethesuccessofeachofyou.

CourseOverview
AVIDisanonpro it,provencollegereadinesssystemthatclosestheachievementgap.Establishedin
1980inoneschoolinSanDiego,todayAVIDisimplementedinapproximately4,900schoolsin46statesand
16countries/territories.AVIDimpactsmorethan700,000studentsingradesK12andpostsecondary,
helpingthemlearnanddeveloptheskillstheyneedtobesuccessfulincollegeandtheircareer.TheAVID
CollegeReadinessSystemtransformsaninstitutionsacademicculturetoincreasethenumberofstudents
whoenrollinfouryearcollegesandsucceedinhighereducationandtraining.A

Notonlyarestudentsenrolledintheirschool'stoughestclasses,suchasHonorsandAdvanced
Placement,butalsointheAVIDelective.Foroneperiodaday,theylearnorganizationalandstudyskills,work
oncriticalthinkingandaskingprobingquestions,getacademichelpfrompeersandcollegetutors,and
participateinenrichmentandmotivationalactivitiesthatmakecollegeseemattainable.Theirselfimages
improve,andtheybecomeacademicallysuccessfulleadersandrolemodelsforotherstudents.

Prerequisites:
StudentsmusteithercompleteanapplicationfortheAVIDElectiveandbeinterviewedorbe
previouslyenrolledintheAVIDelectiveclass.

Therearestandardsthateachstudentisrequiredtomeetforsuccessofanyassignment.Ifyoudonot
meetthisrequirementyouwillmodifyyourworkuntilthisstandardismet.Studentsareexpectedtoworkto
thehighestlevelinordertobesuccessfulinthiscourse.

PreparationforClass
Itisimperativethateachstudentcometoclasspreparedeachday.Youcanexpectyourteachertobe
preparedeachandeveryday.Ifforanyreasonyouarelackingtheequipmentyouneedtobesuccessfullet
yourteacherknowsothatyoucangetthematerialsyouneed.

Assignments

Allworkisexpectedtobedoneatthehighestqualityandturnedinontime.Incaseofanemergencyseeyour

Cheating
Cheatingwillnotbetolerated.Ifyoucheat,allpartiesinvolvedwillnotreceiveanycredit(0)onthatassignment
andwillberequiredtostayforremediationalongwithdisciplinaryreferral.

Testing
Toensurethatstudentslearnandunderstandmaterialsnecessaryforsuccess,theywillbegivenparallel
