Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) est aujourd'hui clbre non seulement pour ses crits
policiers des annes 1940 et 1950, mais aussi pour son rle majeur dans l'mergence
du film noir comme genre, que ce soit en tant que scnariste ou en tant qu'auteur de
polars qui furent trs souvent adapts au cinma sous cette forme. Mais ce genre

rcurrents et cette volution du genre, Chandler ne cesse de fustiger l'artificialit d'une
socit et d'un mode de vie qui, plus qu'une simple toile de fond pour ces nigmes
criminelles, apparaissent souvent comme le sujet vritable de son oeuvre.

Solitario, cnico y escptico, Philip Marlowe es, junto a Sam Spade, el detective ms
famoso de todos los tiempos. De algn modo, todos los grandes detectives que a partir
de los aos cuarenta ha dado la novela negra no hacen ms que recrear al
inolvidable Marlowe, concebido inicialmente por Raymond Chandler como una suerte
de alter ego. Este volumen contiene ntegramente las siete novelas y los dos cuentos
protagonizados por Philip Marlowe, principio y final de su obra: El confidente (1934) y,
ya pstumamente, El lpiz (1961). Entre ellos, El sueo eterno (1939), la primera gran
novela negra de Chandler, en la que el detective investiga el chantaje a un anciano
millonario por la deuda de juego de una de sus hijas. En Adis, mueca (1940), para
muchos su mejor obra, sigue al gigante Moose Malloy en la bsqueda desesperada de
su "pequea Velma", pero termina enredndose en las turbulencias de un hampn. En
La ventana alta (1942), lo que persigue es el rastro de una moneda valorada en una
fortuna para acabar donde suele: en las alcantarillas del engao, la violencia y el
delito. En La dama del lago (1943) la corrupcin y el crimen se desencadenan tras la
desaparicin de una mujer sin atributos. La hermana pequea (1949) servir de
transicin a El largo adis (1954), la cima del gnero negro y de Chandler, quien an
nos regalar Playback (1954).
