Hello everyone,
After a bitterly cold winter, albeit with
good rains, we are looking at clearer
skies and some spring warmth.
September has arrived and lots
happening around town as usual.
Firstly, news on the proposed 9 Bridge
Road development.
For those interested in preserving our history
and those who put in an objection to the
proposed development at No 9 Bridge Rd, the
Administrators for Council passed a report
(26/7/16) to request the Minister for Planning
to apply interim and permanent heritage
controls to 9 Bridge Rd. This was an excellent
outcome and it is now up to the Minister of
Planning Richard Wynne to review this
request.
M e a n w h i l e C o u n c i l h a s p r e pa r e d
Amendment C354 which seeks to apply
permanent Heritage controls to 9 Bridge
Rd and it is now on public exhibition.
Submissions can be made on line, closing
date Monday 26th September 2016.
This process will mean that all parties are
entitled to put in submissions for or against
this heritage control amendment. There were
well over one hundred submissions objecting
to this proposed development and, to ensure
the amendment gets strong community
affirmation, it is important that submissions of
support for Amendment C354 are sent to
Council.
August Meeting unfortunately Lisa Neville
was unwell and an apology but she will be
joining us at our AGM in September.
At the invitation of the BHA, the Save
Barwon Heads Alliance spoke. Steve
Wickham and Gabriel Nagel from the SBHA
Executive and Ross Harrison explained their
organization, aims and future plans to
harness community support to retain the town
boundary. Their aim is to avert the increased
pressures on infrastructure, and the
significant changes to the built and natural
environment which development over the
western boundary would bring.
As directed by a motion passed at our recent
meeting the BHA has written to the Minister for
Planning asking he review a possible conflict
of interest with one of the CoGG
Administrators in connection with the current
Barwon Heads Structure Plan. This review will
be revisiting the prospect of extending the
western boundary. We will keep you posted
as to the Minister's response. (Motion &
The two garages, which are the Sorting and Showrooms, were only built on 2002, and 2005. They will
not require a special spring clean, and in any case,
the Show-room always looks immaculate to me since
the ladies who work there manage to put so many
items outside each time we open, so the customers
will be able to walk around and browse more easily. It
is tricky that their efforts are often made more difficult
because donors are unaware of the huge number of
items that they have to send to the tip. They have
asked that soft toys that have become soiled, toys and
childrens games that are broken or damaged, and
puzzles missing vital parts could be put in your own
rubbish bins, rather than come to us.
My two youngest grandkids just LOVE to fossick in the
toys and excellent books in the Show-Room. They will

2016
Our August concert was SOUNDS FROM THE SCREEN with a lovely blend of
harmonies with 4 clarinets performing a mixture of classical and contemporary music
and reminding us of an amazing number of films with lively and unique interpretations
arranged by themselves! The performers who made up CLARITUDE were Megan,
Ginger, Bronwyn & Stephanie who performed on the impressive bass clarinet & they
obviously thoroughly enjoyed working & playing together!
They began with a two-part suite from an early silent movie with music called Cinerama which began out of sight
(like the Wurlitzer Organ which rose from below floor level to accompany the films at the Regent Theatre in
Melbourne!) & appeared for the second movement which was fun!
Films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral produced Arrival of the Queen of Sheba; Misty with Clint Eastwood
followed by New York New York written for Lisa Minelli with Frank Sinatra making both versions very popular! A
surprising number of films featured the beautiful Clair de Lune. A 1952 black and white Charlie Chaplain film
featured a combination which included Limelight, Baby Elephant Walk, Pink Panther, God Father & Love
Story (I think!) Makin Whoopee speaks for itself with Baker Boys & others, & Por Una Cabeza produced the tango
dance flavour!
Love is an Open Door from Frozen & then was followed by Colours of the Wind composed by Alan Menken, a
very popular & prolific composer for Walt Disney,eg.Pokahontas & Little Mermaid; he won at least 8 Oscars! The
theme from The Game of Thrones provided a complete contrast to the latter! Acker Bilks Stranger on the Shore
was written for his daughter Jenny & was 55 weeks in the top charts! Then we had John Williams Star Wars theme &
Hans Zimmermans Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnnie Depp.
It was amazing to learn how often certain music was in so many & varied films! The Grand Finale was the 1930s
Puttin on the Ritz with Fred Astaire but the audience showed their appreciation so enthusiastically, we were
rewarded with an encore of Skippy!
Our next concert will be held on Sunday, 11th September at 2.30pm in the Anglican Church & will present a small
group of The Geelong College very talented & hard-working wind instrumental students performing a wind quartet, a
wind trio & a pianist performing A Mus A repertoire!
The Barwon Heads Chorale is performing their special concert entitled SONGS of HOME and HEART featuring
favourites from 40s musicals and jazz numbers through to 60s swing and mellow tunes, with singalong for everyone
at the end! It will be held in the Barwon Heads Community Hall on Sunday 18 September at 2.30pm. Afternoon tea
provided after the concert.
ALL FUNDS RAISED AT THE CONCERT WILL GO TO THE ROAD HOME PROJECT,
actively supporting and accommodating WOMEN and CHILDREN who are
VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE in the Greater Geelong and Surf Coast region.
Donation: Members: $10; Visitors: $15. Do stay for afternoon tea following the concert!
Enquiries: please phone Jenny on 5254 2580.

OUR FOCUS IS ON YOU!
POSSUM MAGIC
Possum Magic is a beautifully illustrated story by the very
talented Australian author Mem Fox. This is a story about
Grandma Poss, who makes Hush invisible to protect her
from danger.
The story in our local towns however is very different. With
the increase in development, loss of trees and dense
bushes, many of our Ringtail Possums and Brush-tail
Possums are being displaced adding compromising their
health even further. Most of this displacement of these
animals is happening during the daylight. Possums are
nocturnal animals and should not be out wandering the
streets or reserves during the day. When possums are
down on the ground they are vulnerable to predation by
natural predators and domestic animals.
Again this week Barwon Coast has had to deal with
another Ringtail Possum predated on by a domestic pet.
Due to the animal sustaining horrific injuries some time
back, it unfortunately was kinder to euthanize. This is
becoming an all too familiar occurrence within our coastal
reserves, with over 13 possums having been dealt with just
this winter. Both species of possums are protected wildlife
under State legislation.
It would be nice if there were more people like Mem Fox to
make these animals invisible during the day, but there
aren't. Should you have a possum on your property, are
considering cutting down a tree or dense shrub, or would
like to install a nest box and need some advice, please
contact the team at Barwon Coast or visit our website. We
would also love to hear other helpful tips some of you may
already be doing.
We have already lost our kangaroos, wallabies and koalas,
and we stand to lose so much more by doing nothing.
Together we can make a difference.

More than 200 senior lifesavers competed in the TRE LSV IRB State
Championships at Lorne on July 9 and 10. The competitors battled
moderate swells and windy conditions in front of hundreds of spectators.
Barwon Heads 13th Beach SLSC was the overall winner at the TRE LSV IRB State
Championships over weekend. The club won six of the nine events. They took gold in the Life
Saver Relay, Men's Mass, Men's Rescue, Men's Teams, Women's Mass and Women's Tube

Life Saving Victoria's Sport Manager Russell Higgins said the IRB races are all about simulating
rescue situations and testing the abilities of drivers and crew people as they're transferred to a
competitive setting. ``It was great to see such a high standard of competition and lifesaving skills
across the weekend,'' Mr Higgins said. ``Congratulations to Barwon Heads 13th Beach Surf Life
Saving Club on their success. They are a relatively new IRB team and won six out of the nine
events.''
Overall Barwon Heads finished on 68 points, followed by Williamstown on 56 points and Elwood
on 44 points. National Aussie Championships was held at Mollymook Beach NSW from 22nd24th July. The team had 4 members make the
Victorian State IRB team that f inished 4th

their first Aussies as a brand new team,
managed to make all 9 Semi Finals and
progress into the Final of the Women's Tube.
The team is now looking forward to a big
summer of Volunteer patrols, Summer
Competition in both Senior and Juniors and
then the hard task ahead of matching or even
bettering this winter seasons breakout
performance.

spring, making it an (almost) continual harvest. Only the stems of rhubarb are eaten. In fact the leaves contain toxic levels of oxalic
acid. Rhubarb plants can be divided by cutting through the crown (centre of the plant), ensuring that 'eyes' are present on each
division. Rhubarb can be grown in a wide range of soil types but they need to be well drained. Deep loam rich with organic matter is
the ideal soil environment. It does like a lot of nutrients too, so organic matter with animal manure is preferable.
Coming Up September/October.
Gourmet Edibles: September 17th September 2 4 p.m.
Michelle from Sprouthouse Farms will be giving a talk on how you can sprout your own Gourmet Edibles and Microgreens.
Sprouts and microgreens supply quality nutrients that our bodies assimilate easily, and by weight, are the richest source of
vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants of all fresh food. Learn how to have all that dense nutrition right on your kitchen benchtop.
Also learn how you can use delightful tiny edible flowers and seeds for garnish and decoration. Starter packs will be available
(however there is no obligation to purchase).
A lovely Spring outing to enjoy with tastings and afternoon tea. Places will be limited so enrol early by sending an email with your
details to: workshop@bhartsgarden.com (We will send a return email confirming your enrolment).
Fee: $10 (Which includes afternoon tea).
SAVE THE DATE. SUNDAY OCTOBER 16TH ~ OPEN DAY AT THE GARDENS.
Planning is underway for a Spring Open Day to celebrate and share with you latest developments at the Garden.
Full details will be advertised shortly including activities, information sessions and presentations that will be held d
uring the day.
Having your own plot at the gardens: If you would like a plot at the gardens please drop us a line and we can keep
you in mind when one becomes available. For those who aren't interested in having a plot, but like to offer their support, you
can become a Friend of the Gardens. Currently plot fees for a year are $60 full plot/$30 half plot and Friends membership is

DI KING AND PAUL MARGOCSY EXHIBITION ~ 10- 25 SEPTEMBER
Drinks with Artists Saturday 2-4 pm Saturday 10th and demonstration with Paul Margocsy from 1.00 pm.
Two talented artists will be showcased at Seaview Gallery this month. Both artists are extremely well known and have won many awards in their
respective careers.
Di King has won many coveted awards including the AGRA (Australian Guild of Realist Artists ) and the Mortimore Art Prize.
Di's ability to capture light and movement shows in her paintings, from landscapes, seascapes and cattle drives to figurative works. Her versatility
allows her to paint any subject. Paul Margocsy has had solo exhibitions in London, Japan and the USA just to name a few. He was chosen two
years running to exhibit at the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Birds in Art show in America ( only 80 artists selected from over 3500 entries)
and has had a series of Australian stamps made from his work.
Paul will give a demonstration on Saturday 1- 2pm after which the exhibition will open with drinks with both artists.
Lots of new works from all Seaview Artists on display for September as well.

WHAT'S COOKING AT
THE LOBSTER POT?
Rise and Shine
Wakey, wakey good people. The seasonal alarm
clock has gone off. Hibernation is over.
Throw those blankets aside , open your bleary eyes.
and see the blue sky and sunshine. Let me take
you, dear reader, to your wardrobe and reunite you
with your almost forgotten summer clothes. Right
there in the dark corners of the middle drawer.
Behind the Superman outfit. Really?
At your age?
Never mind, everyone makes errors of judgement.
You will have also found shorts, Tee shirts and
bathers. In the shoe rack you will find sandals and
thongs. Get them all out and give them a clean.
Wash away the evidence of other errors of
judgement. Let's get ready for a fresh, new start to
the warm, sunny weather that's on it's inevitable
way. That is very much the same as what's been
going on at the Lobster Pot. Also known as The
Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre. It's the closedlooking green building on the riverfront near 'At the
Heads' restaurant.
The Friends of the Lobster Pot have been holding
working bees to refresh and renew the exhibits for a
fresh new start to the upcoming hectic opening
season which happens at about the same time as
your summer wardrobe gets plenty of use. That is
after Boxing Day until Australia Day from 1.004.00p.m. daily. Plan your visit now. The Friends of
the Lobster Pot is a volunteer organisation of likeminded people interested in the natural and cultural
heritage of our beautiful river estuary. If that sounds
like you you would be welcome to join the group. It's
not too demanding once the spring cleaning is over.
You just need to be awake and alert & happy to
share your knowledge of the natural world around
us.
You can contact the group through Barwon Coast.
Call in at the office or phone Maddie Glynne. I must
finish now it's breakfast time.

But hopefully in the next issue we will have lots to share with
you such as our new committee and some photos from our
presentation day. If you have put your name down for summer
season expect to hear from the coach or team manager by the
end of the term.
If you havent then please email
Seagullsbasketballclub@gmail.com for further details.
Good luck to the teams that play finals and to everyone else
enjoy some rest and relaxation before seeing you back in
Term 4.
Thanks
