Experiment Name:

Determination of sliver & roving hank by wrap block & balance.

Introduction:
A sliver is a long bundle of fiber that is generally used to spin yarn. A sliver is created
by carding or combing the fiber, which is then drawn into long strips where the fiber is
parallel. When sliver is drawn further and given a slight twist, it becomes roving.
A roving is a long and narrow bundle of fiber. It is usually used to spin woolen yarn. A
roving can be created by carding the fiber, and it is then drawn into long strips.
Because it is carded, the fibers are not parallel, though drawing it into strips may line
the fibers up a bit. Roving is similar to sliver.
Hank is A loop or coil of something flexible
A loop or coil of something flexible
A specific length of coiled thread or yarn: a hank of worsted yarn contains 560
yd; a hank of cotton contains 840 yd
A ring or clip for fastening a staysail to its stay
A coil of rope, wool or yarn.
A lot of knitting yarn comes in perfectly manageable packages like balls and skeins.
All you have to do to get started knitting is pull the end of the yarn from the outside
(or center) of the ball or skein, cast on and go.
There are two types of count measuring system1) Direct system, = weight / unit length = W x l / L x w.
2) Indirect system, = Length / unit weight = L x w / l x W.
Where,
W= Wt. of sample,
L= Length of the sample,
w= unit wt. of the system,
l= unit wt. of the system.

Objectives:
On behind of every experiment there must be some objects. At the same there are
some objectives on behind of this experiment. Which are as follows:
To know about yarn sliver and roving
To know about sliver & roving hank

To know about wrap block details & its use

To find out the sliver & roving hank by using wrap block & balance

Apparatus:
Wrap Block
Electric Balance

Material:
Sliver 10 yds
Roving 03 yds

Working procedure:
We have divided the total experiment into the following parts:At first we have taken the stock sliver
Then we have taken one end of sliver
Set the end of sliver drum of wrap block
Then rotate the handle in clockwise direction
As the circumference of wrap block is 1 yd then rotate three times for taking 03 yds
sliver
Then weight taken for 03 yds sliver by balance
Write down the value of sliver weight in gm

At last find out the sliver hank by put the value of weight in the formula
Similarly, finding the Roving hank by taken 10 yds roving

Result:
After done this experiment, we have got the sliver & roving hank which are Sliver hank (Ne) = 0.091
Roving hank (Ne) = 0.76

Precaution:
Every experiment has some precaution. In this experiment we have take some
precaution as follows:
1) We have set the sliver & roving between the guide & rubbing guide of wrap
block very carefully.
2) Operating the wrap block very carefully (clockwise).
3) Taking the weight of sliver & roving by electric balance very carefully.
4) Calculate the sliver & roving hank very carefully correctly.

Remarks:
Sliver & roving hank is very important for producing quality yarn. This is very
important experiment for all textile students. Quality control is a major side for textile
sector because there no sector in textile engineering where need not quality control. In
this experiment we have find the sliver & roving hank by wrap block & balance.
Therefore from the above we can easily understand the importance of the experiment
in the field of textile quality control. We want to establish us as a qualified
professional skilled manpower of this sector for that we practice this experiment in
textile testing & quality control lab.
Our teacher & lab assistant helps us for completing this experiment correctly &
carefully thats why we have done this experiment very well.
At last we can say we are successful about this experiment.
