Comments:
(Observation of the PSTs interaction with students, discussion with the PST and Mentor Teacher, PP
documentation)

Katherine it was a pleasure to visit your Grade 1/2 classroom at Wattle Glen PS on 10th
September.
Your PP Folder was organized and contained lesson plans and resources.
The lesson was mid-morning, before recess, and you began with 17 students sitting on the floor.
You settled them well using names to gain attention. This was successful. Use of names is always
good as it demands attention of individuals and builds a connection with the teacher.
You used minor sanctions to settle and maintain attention. This also worked well.
The lesson had a writing focus on blends and diagraphs. The children were engaged and enjoyed
the content. A recognition game, projected to the interactive whiteboard, was used to teach and
maintain interest.
Your voice was good - clear with an appropriate volume. There was also good use of facial
expressions. It was good to see you smile and your overall cheerfulness. You were clearly happy
to be working with them. This is so important for student engagement.
You were confident and relaxed in your interactions and this showed good rapport with the class.
They were very keen to show you what they had done on the writing task that followed the game.
They looked to see how you would respond. This was nice to see.
Particularly evident, was your calm and patient manner in responding to whatever arose. This was
nice to see given that this was, in some ways, a complex and lively group of children. The clear
requests to children about behavior were direct and effective. Also, hands on heads and a
handclap to initiate pack up worked well too. This showed both confidence and patience.
The recognition game worked very well. The children were keen to participate and you encouraged
them irrespective of correct and incorrect responses. The feedback was excellent with a regular
good job and we are doing so well, and later I love it. I am sure that you can see the
importance, and the impact, of this level of affirmation to young learners.
It was also good to see that you were often down at their level. This is very effective during one-onone interactions.

Strengths and Area for improvement

(Based on discussion with Mentor and notes taken above)

Your Mentor was very pleased with your work and progress in this 4 Week primary teaching
placement. You are doing well. I was impressed with what I saw for a first MC219 placement.
In particular, she noted that you were asking questions, seeking advice, and acting upon that
advice.
Strengths mentioned/noticed included:

Rapport with students,

Your planning,
Your classroom presence,
Your knowledge of the learner diversity and individual need,
Your one-on-one interactions.

In all teaching placements, it is useful to do a focused reflection on your teaching. That is, after
each lesson document what worked well and what didnt. In each case, do you know why? It is
important to have answers that you understand. Use this reflection as a way of discussing with
your mentor new strategies and foci for coming lessons.
Select a skill that you would like to focus upon for improvement in each lesson. Plan for performing
that skill and ask your mentor to observe that skill in your lesson. This is a way of identifying and
targeting what needs to be improved.
Discuss with your mentor what foci might be suitable for you during the remainder of your
placement at Wattle Glen PS.
This was a successful and accomplished placement. Well done. It was a pleasure watching you
teach so well.
