The Ten Commandments

The Bible teaches the following concerning the Ten Commandments:

“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and ordinances that I commanded him at
Horeb for all Israel.” Malachi 4:4

The Ten Commandments are described as:

…the dispensation of death, carved in letters on stone… 2Corinthians 3:7

and

…the dispensation of condemnation… 2Corinthians 3:9

The Ten Commandments can never make perfect those who draw near:

For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these
realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices which are continually offered year after year, make
perfect those who draw near. Hebrews 10:1 (See also Ezekiel 20:25, Romans 4:13-15 and Psalms 51:17)

The Ten Commandments were given in order to increase the sins of the unrighteous:

Now we know that the law is good, if any one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is
not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the
unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, immoral
persons, sodomites, kidnapers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, in
accordance with the glorious gospel of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
1Timothy 1:8-11

Law came in, to increase the trespass… Romans 5:20

Man would not rightly have understood My (understood God’s) judgment, if he had not accepted
the law, and if his fear had not been (rooted) in understanding. But now because he transgressed,
though he knew, yea, on account of this also, he shall be tormented (in hell) because he knew.
The Apocalypse of Baruch XV.5-6

…whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of it all. James 2:10

Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins. Ecclesiastes 7:20

Love fulfills the law of the Ten Commandments:

And this is love, that we follow his commandments; this is the commandment, as you have heard
from the beginning, that you follow love. 2John 6

For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Galatians
5:14

The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You
shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, “You shall love
your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is a fulfilling of
the law. Romans 13:9-10

Above all hold unfailing your love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins. 1Peter
4:8

Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every
mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For no human
being will be justified in his sight by works of the law, since through the law comes the
knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from law,
although the law and the prophets bear witness to it, the righteousness of God through faith in
Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; since all have sinned and fall short
of the glory of God, they are justified by his faith as a gift, through the redemption which is in
Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as an expiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This
was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former
sins; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies him who
has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boast? It is excluded. On what principle? On the
principle of works? No, but on principle of faith. For we hold that a man is justified by faith
apart from works of law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also?
Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one; and he will judge the circumcised on the ground of their
faith and the uncircumcised through their faith. Do we then overthrow the law? By no means!
On the contrary, we uphold the law. Romans 3:19-31

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels (speaking in tongues), but have not love, I am a
noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries
and all knowledge (all gifts of the Holy Spirit), and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains,
but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all that I have, and if I deliver my body to be
burned (all works), but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love is not
jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not
irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things,
believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends; as for prophecies, they
will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. When I was
a child (a babe in Christ) I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when
I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to
face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood. So
faith (in God and Jesus), love (for others), hope (of eternal life) abide, these three; but the
greatest of these is love. 1Corinthians 13:1-13

Jesus fulfills our obligations under the laws of the Ten Commandments for us:
…a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have
believed in Jesus Christ, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law,
because of works of the law shall no one be justified. Galatians 2:16

The law and the prophets were until John (the Baptist); since then the good news of the kingdom
of God is preached, and every one enters it violently. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass
away, than for one dot of the law to become void (though the law is not voided, Jesus fulfills the
law for us, a law we could never ourselves fulfill). Luke 16:16-17

For (Jesus) Christ is the end of the law, that everyone that has faith may be justified. Romans 10:5

In speaking of a new covenant he (God) treats the first as obsolete… Hebrews 8:13

Jesus being the end of the law:

…sin is not counted where there is no law. Romans 5:13

Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the offspring should come to
whom the promise had been made; and it was ordained by angels through an intermediary. Now
an intermediary implies more than one; but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of
God? Certainly not; for if a law had been given which could make alive, then righteousness
would indeed be by the law. But the scripture consigned all things to sin, that what was
promised to faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. Galatians 3:19-22

…now (by the death of Jesus) we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us
captive, so that we serve not under the old written code (including the Ten Commandments) but
in the new life of the (Holy) Spirit. Romans 7:6

Led by the Holy Spirit you are not under the law:

But if you are led by the (Holy) Spirit you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh
are plain: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger,
selfishness, dissention, party spirit, envy, drunkenness, carousing and the like. I warn you, as I
warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the
fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control; against such there is no law. Galatians 5:18-25

In Conclusion

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be every one
who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, and do them.” Now it is evident
that no man is justified before God by the law; for “He who by faith is righteous shall live”; but
the law does not rest on faith, for “He who does them shall live by them.” (Jesus) Christ
redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed
be everyone who hangs on a tree”—that in Christ Jesus the blessings of Abraham might come
upon the Gentiles, that we might receive the promise of the (Holy) Spirit through faith. Galatians
3:10-14
