QUESTION 1 [16 marks]


The force P acts along line AF of the wedge in Figure 1. If the magnitude of
P = 170N. Determine:
a. the moment of the force about point E.

QUESTION 2 [18 marks]


Bar AC of the Figure 2 below, is rested against a smooth surface at end C and is supported at end A
with a ball-and socket joint. The cable at B is attached midway between the ends of the bar and point
D. Determine the reactions at supports A and C and the tension in the cable at BD.

Figure 3 below shows a pin-jointed truss subjected to vertical loads of 20 kN, 30 kN and 20 kN at joint
B, D, and E respectively. The truss is supported by a pinned joint at the left-hand end and a roller at
right-hand end.

QUESTION 5 [16 marks]


The worker weighs 900 N while the ladder weighs 150 N in Figure 5 shown below. The center of mass
of the 3.6 m ladder is at its midpoint. The angle between the wall and the ladder is 30o. The wall
exerts negligible friction on the ladder. Determine:
a. The friction force exerted on the ladder by the floor if x = 1.2 m.

b. The minimum coefficient of static friction between ladder and floor for the worker to climb to
top of ladder without slipping.
