Zdzisaw Beksiski

a Polish painter, sculptor, and photographer.

He specialized in the field of dystopian surrealism.


Beksiski did his paintings and drawings in what he

called either a 'Baroque' or a 'Gothic' manner.

from the Greek word cacotopia or simply anti-utopia


a community or society that is undesirable or

frightening.

translated as "not-good place", an antonym of

utopia.

"Utopia" - the blueprint for an ideal society with no

crime or poverty.

began in the early 1920s; best known for its

visual artworks and writings.


The aim was to "resolve the previously
contradictory conditions of dream and reality.

His paintings were mainly created using oil paint on

hardboard panels; also experimented with acrylic


paints.

All his paintings were sold at a prestigious

exhibition in Warsaw in 1964 and proved to be his


major success.

Before moving to Warsaw in 1977, he burned a


selection of his works in his own backyard, without
leaving any documentation on them.

In the latter part of the 1990s, he discovered


computers, the Internet, digital photography and
photomanipulation, a medium that he focused on
until his death.

His paintings often depict anxiety.

He abhorred silence, and always listened to


classical and rock music while painting.

I chose Zdzisaw Beksiski because he was the first one who


appeared in the top searches for a creepy painter when I searched it
on Google. I honestly didnt think that his works would be so great

and interesting! His paintings made me think I was really inside of


them, and the objects presented were giving me the goosebumps

because they were creepy yet beautiful at the same time. I learned
more about his life as I researched about him and I was definitely sad
that he died at 2005. I am honestly honored to be able to view his
artworks even after he died!
