The generator rating is 25 MVA, 11 kV with subtransient reactance of 20 %. Each motor

has subtransient reactance of 25 % on a base of 5 MVA, 6.6 kV. The three-phase rating of
step-up transformer is 25 MVA, 11/66 kV with a leakage reactance of 10 % and that of
step-down transformer is 25 MVA, 66/6.6 kV with a leakage reactance of 10 %. The
transmission line reactance is 15% on a base of 25 MVA, 66 kV. The motors are
operating on no load with a terminal voltage of 6.6 kV.
a) For a symmetrical fault at F as shown in figure, determine subtransient
symmetrical fault current through circuit breakers A and B.
b) Repeat calculations if the fault is on the motor bus bar.

2. Two synchronous motors are connected to the bus of a large system through a short
transmission line as shown. The ratings of various components are

When the motors are operating on no load at 440 V, calculate the symmetrical
short circuit current fed into a 3-phase fault at motor bus.

3. A synchronous generator and motor are rated 30 MVA, 13.2 kV and both have
subtransient reactance of 20 %. The line connecting them has a reactance of 10 % on the
base of machine rating. The motor is drawing 20 MW, 0.8 pf lagging at a terminal voltage
of 12.8 kV when a symmetrical fault occurs at its terminals. Find the subtransient current
through fault, generator and motor by (i) internal voltage method (ii) Thevenins
equivalent circuit.

4. The single line diagram of a power system is as shown in figure. The ratings of
equipments connected are as follows:
Generator G1: 20 MVA, 13.2 kV, X = 15%
Generator G2: 20 MVA, 13.2 kV, X = 15%
Motor M: 30 MVA, 6.9 kV, X = 20%
Transformers T1, T2, T3, T4: 20 MVA, 13.8/138 kV, X = 10%
Transformers T5, T6: 15 MVA, 6.9/138 kV star, X = 10%

a) Using a base of 50 MVA, 138 kV in the 40 line, draw the reactance diagram.
b) A 3 phase symmetrical fault occurs at bus bar B. Calculate the subtransient currents in
G1, G2 and M when
(i)

The motor is no load

(ii)

The motor draws 24 MW at 0.8 p.f. lead at 6.6 kV.

(iii) Find the bus voltages of A and C in both cases (i) and (ii).

5. A Synchronous generator is connected to a motor through a transformer. The subtransient

reactance of generator and motor are 0.15 pu and 0.35 pu. The leakage reactance of
transformer is 0.1 pu. The generator terminal voltage is 0.9 pu and supplies a load current
of 1.0 pu at 0.8 pf leading to the motor. 3 cycle circuit breakers are installed at generator
and motor terminals for protection. When a 3 phase fault occurs at the motor terminals,
determine the momentary and interrupting currents of circuit breakers.
