Investigator Church Attendance

the Number One Predictor of Baptism
Before sharing my thoughts on this topic, I wanted to take a moment and extend
my love, congratulations and kudos to El Faro missionaries for the hard work and
consecration we see so frequently every day. This last week, because of the hard
work of our dedicated missionaries, we found 804 newsthe second highest number
of new investigators since we have been here (and perhaps the 2nd highest ever
found)!!
How pleased the Savior is when you missionaries are working hard and
working smartnot wasting a minute. We love you and feel honored to serve side by
side with you.
A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it
made no sense to go to church every Sunday. Ive gone for 30 years now he wrote,
and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I
cant remember a single one of them. So, I think Im wasting my time and the
speakers are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all. This started a real controversy in
the Letters to the Editor column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for
weeks until someone wrote this clincher: Ive been married for 30 years now. In that
time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall
the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know thisthey all nourished
me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me
these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church
for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today. Elders and Hermanas our
investigators need to attend Church! One of the eight fundamentals of missionary
work found in the curriculum for the 12 Week Program is Revelation through Church
Attendance. Our investigators will never be baptized until they leave their comfort
zone and extend themselves a little by attending church and tasting the sweet fruits
of that experience. I have learned through fairly extensive missionary experience
throughout my life that investigator Church attendance is the #1 predictor of the
likelihood of their being baptized. Reading the scriptures, praying, obeying the
commandments, having faith, embracing the principles of the gospel can all be

done in the safety and security of their own homes. It is much easier, much more
comfortable and less challenging. However, when an investigator is motivated to get
up on a Sunday morning, leave their bed, travel some distance to an unknown building
with strangers in it and participate in services that are not at all familiar to them---it is a
great act of faith and predicts movement in their growth in the gospel. Some 20% of
people who attend Church will be baptized! Additionally, over 30% of people who
attend Church with a fecha will be baptized. Those are wonderful odds and odds that
we would all accept in a New York minute.
My belief is that we testify to the importance of their attending Sacrament meeting
but, in addition, we help them understand the WHY. Why does our Heavenly Father
want us to attend Church? If we dont understand why, it is hard to expect our
investigators to understand the importance of attending. Below I have listed some of
the reasons I believe the Lord wants us (and our investigators) to attend Sacrament
meeting:
1. Because it is a commandment (Exodus 20:8-11)
2. We strengthen each other in our faith. (PMG pg 74)
3. Our investigators have a chance to feel the presence of the Holy Ghost at
Church.
4. They learn gospel doctrine and the scriptures in Sacrament meeting and the
Sunday School classes.
5. They are privileged to see the simplicity and beauty of the Sacrament.
6. They begin to feel the love and warmth of the ward/branch memberstheir
future spiritual family.
7. They begin to understand the culture of the Church.
8. They see us stop the routine actions of our lives and actually dedicate time to
stop, reflect and worship God.
9. They see a people who show God their willingness to keep their covenants
(PMG pg 74).
10. They see that common ordinary men without professional training giving talks,
serving as leaders, and building the kingdom.
11. They observe a people whose religion is not just a Sunday thingit is a way of
life.
12. They witness a spiritual family who love the scriptures and take seriously
obedience to the truths found therein.
In conclusion, getting our investigators to Church is absolutely critical. Their faith
cant grow and they are unlikely to continue to progress if they dont come to Church.
We need to do a better job of getting them to Church by helping them understand the
why and testifying of the truth of this commandment. May we find success in helping
our investigators get to Church by letting the Spirit guide us in what to say and what to
do. So much depends on it.

Message From Hermana Dayton

SINCERITY VS HYPOCRISY

Sincerity is an eagerness to do what is right, with transparent motives. A close

synonym of sincerity is the word integrity, which means completeness and fullness.
The Savior often spoke of hypocrites who performed outward religious acts in order to
get the praise of men yet they were full of inward corruption. Hypocrites are those who
are not devoted to the Lord. In Matthew 5:8 we read, "This people draweth nigh unto
me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me."
Paul wrote, "This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge
and all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be
SINCERE and without offense till the day of Christ; being filled with the fruits of
righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God." Philippians
1:9-11. Paul learned that when he relied on the Lord with all of his heart, he received
strength from the Lord, even though he was weak. The Lord says this to him, "My grace is
sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will
I rather glory in infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me" (2 Corinthians 12:9).
A part of being sincere is acknowledging our faults. In interviews a few months ago I
asked you to share with me your favorite scripture in the Book of Mormon. I was amazed
to see that nine missionaries mentioned this scripture, " And if men come unto me I will
show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble;
and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they
humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things
become strong unto them. (Ether 12:27)
Recently I read this from one of our faithful missionaries, "Elder __________is an amazing
missionary. The one thing that has struck me the strongest is the way he prays. Every time

we pray together he takes his time, prays for everyone and he is SINCERE in every word. I
remember the first night together our whole piso had a group prayer then we all went to
our respective beds for our personal prayers. I finished my prayers and Elder_______
wasn't in the room. I just assumed he was in the bathroom, so I climbed into bed and
waited for him to come in. Well ten minutes passed by and I was getting a little worried
so I went out to the other room to look for him. There he was, in the study on his knees. I
could feel the spirit just from entering in the room. I know we see miracles due to his faith
and prayers." This example warmed my heart, especially since I have always admired
this humble, obedient, meek missionary who has a sincere heart. In Helaman 3:27 we
read, "the Lord is merciful unto all who will, in the sincerity of their hearts, call upon His
holy name."
We feel grateful for so many of you missionaries who exemplify the character trait of
sincerity. We feel grateful for the way you sincerely invite others to make changes in their
lives and follow Christ. We will continue to pray for you as you ask your investigators to
read the Book of Mormon and then take the challenge found in Moroni 10:4 "to ask with
a SINCERE heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ.
President Dayton and I sincerely love you and feel grateful for your goodness. We will
continue to pray for you daily as you bless the lives of the good people in Spain.

Which brings me to the miracle
of the week, which was our

baptism of Liliana. She was a

reference from some members,
which means out of all my
baptisms there has still only been
one that wasn't a reference.
Which
again
shows
the
importance of member work. So
we weren't actually planning on
having her baptized this week,
but Friday morning she called us
and said she wanted to get
baptized Saturday, so we called
the zone leaders to do the
interview, luckily they had free
time and we did it Friday, and
then Saturday morning made
preparations
and
got
her
baptized in the afternoon. It was
a great baptismal program and
even though the baptism was

a large assistance at the

excited for her, and she was
actually able to get baptized the
same day as her daughter in
Colombia.
