Journal of Engineering Science and Technology ‘Vol. 10, No. 7 (2018) 885 - 877 (@ School of Engineering, Taylor's University STUDY ON EMPIRICAL SEISMIC CODAL GUIDELINES FOR MASONRY BUILDINGS IN KOLLAM, KERALA, INDIA N.S. POTTY", M. SIRAJUDDIN® Abstract ‘Masonry strucrures fail miserably due to Isteral loads. Recent earthquakes in India and the world and the resulting losses bipilichted the smucural imdequacy of masonry buildings 10 seismic loads. Incesse in Gequency of eaniquake in Kerala recealy and incressine concern motivated the study. Localized survey at Kollam town in Kerala found chat most of de structures ‘were masonry. Kerala falls in Zones Irand I IS 13628 and 13 4326 provides ‘masonry structures’ empirical desien and constuction fesnes which mey raise ‘he earhquske resistance. The smd is concemed with the mumerical analysis of ‘rick masomry walls (with and without seismic sesisive fearures) subjected 10 dynamic loading with emphosis oa thei nowlinesr beksviour, Mechanical properties of dbree varieties of brick and three diferent mix proportion of orar were determined. Using the mstenal properties, nonlinear dyaamic suslysis of 2 masonry wall panel was done using ANSYS sofmare and the ‘sound motion record of Blnj earthquake, The effect of size and posiion of (pening: in the masonry wale the pier size, provision of lintels and the effect of morkar on resistance of walls under dynamic loads are discussed and possible recoSitiag messes are suggested to stTengthen tbe masonry brick wall resistance, Dynamic analysis, Wall model.
