ScientistsatTheUniversityofManchesterhavedevelopedanewwayofdatingarchaeologicalobjects
usingfireandwatertounlocktheirinternalclocks.Thesimplemethodpromisestobeassignificanta
techniquefordatingceramicmaterialsasradiocarbondatinghasbecomefororganicmaterialssuchas
boneorwood.
AteamfromTheUniversityofManchesterandTheUniversityofEdinburghhasdiscoveredanew
techniquewhichtheycallrehydroxylationdatingthatcanbeusedonfiredclayceramicslike
bricks,tileandpottery.
WorkingwithTheMuseumofLondon,theteamhasbeenabletodatebricksamplesfromRoman,
medievalandmodernperiodswithremarkableaccuracy.
Theyhaveestablishedthattheirtechniquecanbeusedtodeterminetheageofobjectsupto2,000years
oldbutbelieveithasthepotentialtobeusedtodateobjectsaround10,000yearsold.

Theexcitingnewfindingshavebeenpublishedonlinetoday(20May2009)bytheProceedingsofthe
RoyalSocietyA.
Themethodreliesonthefactthatfiredclayceramicmaterialwillstarttochemicallyreactwith
atmosphericmoistureassoonasitisremovedfromthekilnafterfiring.Thiscontinuesoveritslifetime
causingittoincreaseinweighttheolderthematerial,thegreatertheweightgain.
In2003theManchesterandEdinburghteamdiscoveredanewlawthatpreciselydefineshowtherateof
reactionbetweenceramicandwatervariesovertime.
Theapplicationofthislawunderpinsthenewdatingmethodbecausetheamountofwaterthatis
chemicallycombinedwithaceramicprovidesaninternalclockthatcanbeaccessedtodetermineits
age.
Thetechniqueinvolvesmeasuringthemassofasampleofceramicandthenheatingittoaround500
degreesCelsiusinafurnace,whichremovesthewater.

Thesampleisthenmonitoredinasuperaccuratemeasuringdeviceknownasamicrobalance,to
determinethepreciserateatwhichtheceramicwillcombinewithwaterovertime.
Usingthetimelaw,itispossibletoextrapolatetheinformationcollectedtocalculatethetimeitwilltake
toregainthemasslostonheatingrevealingthesamplesage.
TheyhavecalculatedthataRomanbricksamplewithaknownageofaround2,000yearswas2,001
yearsold.Afurthersamplewithaknownageofbetween708and758yearswascalculatedtohavean
ageof748years.
Theresearchersalsotestedamysterybrick,withtherealageonlyrevealedtothemoncetheyhad
completedtheirprocess.Thisknownagewasbetween339and344yearsandthenewtechnique
suggestedthebrickwas340yearsold.
Duringthecourseoftheirresearch,theteamalsofoundthatceramicobjectshavetheirinternaldate
clocksresetiftheyareexposedtotemperaturesof500degreesCelsius.Usedonmedievalbrickfrom
Canterbury,thetechniquerepeatedlydatedasampleasbeing66yearsold.Furtherinvestigationrevealed
thatCanterburywasdevastatedbyincendiarybombsandfiresduringaSecondWorldWarblitzin1942.
Theintenseheatgeneratedbythebombinghadresetthedatingclockbyeffectivelyrefiringthebricks.
TheresultsalsoprovedaccurateenoughtoshowthatabricksamplefromtheKingCharlesbuildingin
Greenwichcamefromreconstructioncarriedoutinthe1690sandnotfromtheoriginalbuildingwhich
wasconstructedbetween1664and1669.
LeadauthorDrMoiraWilson,SeniorLecturerintheSchoolofMechanical,AerospaceandCivil
Engineering(MACE),said:Thesefindingscomeaftermanyyearsofhardwork.Weareextremely
excitedbythepotentialofthisnewtechnique,whichcouldbecomeanestablishedwayofdeterminingthe
ageofceramicartefactsofarchaeologicalinterest.
Themethodcouldalsobeturnedonitsheadandusedtoestablishthemeantemperatureofamaterial
overitslifetime,ifaprecisedateoffiringwereknown".Thiscouldpotentiallybeusefulinclimate
changestudies.
Aswellasthenewdatingmethod,therearealsomorewiderangingapplicationsofthework,suchas
thedetectionofforgedceramic.
Thethreeyear100,000projectwasfundedbytheLeverhulmeTrust,withthemicrobalancewhich
measuresmassto1/10thofamillionthofagramfundedbya66,000grantfromtheEngineeringand
PhysicalScienceResearchCouncil(EPSRC).
Researchersarenowplanningtolookatwhetherthenewdatingtechniquecanbeappliedtoearthenware,
bonechinaandporcelain.

Fireandwaterareallthatisneededtounlocktheinternalclocks'ofarchaeologicalremainsand
accuratelyrevealtheirage,sayscientists.Theresearch,publishedonlinetodayinProceedingsofthe
RoyalSocietyA,willhelparchaeologistsdateremainsthatarethousandsofyearsold,andalsoreveal
whereothertechniquesgowrong.
Datingmethodsareofparamountimportanceintheearthandenvironmentalsciences,palaeontology,
archaeology,andarthistory.Firedclaymaterialsuchasbricks,tileandceramicsrepresentan
importantsampleoftheremainsunearthedatarchaeologicaldigs,buttheyarenotoriouslyhardto
dateaccurately(**).Carbon14dating,whichcanbeusedonbone,doesnotworkwithceramics,and
thosetechniquesthatdoexistareextremelycomplex.
NowateamofscientistsfromtheUniversitiesofManchesterandEdinburghhavefoundasurprisingly
simplewaytogetaroundthisissue.
Fromthemomenttheyarefired,ceramicsbegintoabsorbmoisturefromtheenvironmentwhichcauses
themtogainmass.Usingatechniquetheycallrehydroxilationdating'researchersledbyDrMoira
WilsonfromtheUniversityofManchesterfoundthatheatingasampleoftherelictoextreme
temperaturescausesthisprocesstobereversedallthemoistureithasgainedsinceitwasfiredislost
again.
Themoreweightasamplelosesduringheating,themoremoisturetherewastostartwith,andsothe
oldertherelic.Afterheating,Wilsonandherteamusedanextremelyaccuratemeasuringdeviceto
monitorthesampleasitbegantorecombinewithmoistureintheatmosphere.Theythenusedalawto
predicthowlongitwouldtakeforallthewaterlostinheatingtobereabsorbed,andsorevealthetrue
ageofthesample.
TotesttheirnewtechniquethescientiststeamedupwiththeMuseumofLondonandtrieditouton
samplesofknowage.TheysuccessfullydatedbricksamplesfromtheRoman,medievalandmodern
periods,andthemethodwassoaccuratethatitlookstobecomethewayinwhichsuchartefactsaredated
inthefuture,accordingtoWilson.
Sofar,thetechniquehasbeenusedwithspecimensthatareasmuchas2000yearsold,buthasthe
potentialtobeusedonmucholderartefacts,saysWilson,eventhosedatingback10,000years.
What'smore,thetechniquehasrevealedaflawinpreviousdatingverdicts.Whenclayobjectsare
submittedtoextremetemperatures,andmoistureremoved,thisinternalclock'isreset.Thatmeansthat
objectsthathavebeensubjectedtoextremeheat,suchasthosedatingbacktotheWWIIBlitzareoften,
intruth,mucholder.
