Solid Waste

Solid waste is any discarded materials which presents many serious environmental and
public health problems and risks. A material is discarded if it is abandoned by being; disposed
of,burned or incinerated, dumped or spilled(oil). Solid waste can be solid, liquid, and semi-solid
or containerized gaseous material. Solid waste can cause many problems to our environment.
Some of these problems are:pollution, outbreak of diseases and climate change which affects our
daily lifestyle.
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that causes adverse
change.Types of pollution includes:water, air and land pollution. Water pollution is
the contamination of water. There are many different ways to pollute water, for example; oil
spill. There was a big oil spill in the United States, in the Deepwater Horizon on April 20, 2010 it
lasted for approximately three months. About 172,000- 180,800 gallons were released.
Air pollution is the introduction of particulates, biological molecules, or other harmful
materials into Earth's atmosphere, causing diseases and death to humans. An example of air
pollution is the factories that are releasing gaseous substances. From 1980 through 2010, the
level of lead polluting air in the United States dropped by 89%, which causes a result in acid
rain. You can save the environment from degradation by reducing the amount of fossil fuels to be
burned.
Land pollution is the deposition of solid or liquid waste materials on land or underground in
a manner that can contaminate the soil and groundwater, threaten public health, and cause
unsightly conditions and nuisances.According to the BBC in a 2011 article, the United Kingdom
throws away about 15 million plastic bottles daily. And the majority of these bottles end up in the
landfills. To stop land pollution. Make people aware about the concept of Reduce, Recycle and
Reuse.
Solid waste can cause a big outbreak of diseases. Certain chemicals if released untreated,
e.g. Cyanides and mercury are highly toxic and exposure can lead to disease or death. Some
studies have detected excesses of cancer in residents exposed to hazardous waste. Many studies
have been carried out in various parts of the world to establish a connection between health and
hazardous waste. Some of the diseases caused by solid waste are:hepatitis virus or jaundicecausing virus.
Climate change is also one of the effects of solid waste.Climate change is a change in
global or regional climate patterns. The disposal and treatment of waste can produce emissions
of several greenhouse gases , which contribute to global climate change. Solid waste affects
climate change through landfill methane emission. Emission of methane gas happens when
organic waste is left to decay anaerobically in landfills which produces methane gas.

In conclusion solid waste has many effects in our environment. Some of the effects are above in
which we explained them and gave examples t show.
