Instructional Design Key Assessment

Fall 2014
Part 1: Identification of Learning Problem
Using the free web tool Evernote as a classroom management/content curation
tool for students/teachers in the middle school environment.
Target Audience:
The target audience consists of certified teachers of all experience levels, and
subject areas within a middle school environment. The target audiences students
would typically be between 10-14 years of age. The target audience teaches or
provides supportive educational services to students in grades 6-8 .The target
audience will also include library media specialists who are occasionally required
to provide technology training/support to teacher faculty.
Problem Identification:
One consistent challenge that middle school students, ages 10 to 14 face is their
ability to manage and organize classwork, and use technology effectively. Middle
school students regularly take poor class notes, lose work, forget assignments,
and turn in low-quality work. These problems are not only frustrating to students,
but especially frustrating to middle school teachers who usually have 5 periods a
day, with 30 or more students in a class. On any given day, a middle school
teacher manages the classwork and classroom environment of 150 students or
more. With an ever-increasing amount of classroom/school responsibilities,
teachers can easily find themselves overwhelmed and overloaded with papers,
folders, physical projects and documents from students.
If you walk into the average middle school teachers classroom you will see
shelves stacked with various binders, workbooks, textbooks and miscellaneous
resources. You might notice a teachers desk layered with a mix of papers,
documents from students, faculty correspondence, notes from parents, and
memos from administrators. If you look at the computer desktop of most
teachers you will see large numbers of files and documents that are unorganized
and easily lost in Microsoft oblivion. Often you will find multiple copies of
documents because teachers dont know that they already have a copy or they
couldnt find the document or file when they needed it. Teachers also normally
have a physical area in the classroom where students turn-in work. Here, work is
often lost, stolen, damaged, incomplete, and/or poor quality. With multiple,
ineffective organizational systems existing in a classroom, the environment can
easily become unmanageable, ineffective and unproductive.
Evernote is a free web 2.0 tool that can easily be used in the classroom as
classroom/project management tool. Teachers can use this one tool to manage
classes, assignments, projects, and curate a collection of resources that are
available to them at anytime on a variety of devices. In order for the Evernote

classroom management system to work effectively, teachers must be trained on

how to use this web tool. Currently, middle school teachers are using a variety of
classroom management strategies with varying degrees of success. Some
teachers are highly skilled at using some type of digital tool to support classroom
learning while others use no technology at all. Training all teachers to use
Evernote will allow for a fluent and interactive collaboration experience between
teachers and students.
Instructional Goals:
1. Target audience will know how to curate and retrieve a collection of
documents, resources and digital media using Evernote.
2. Target audience will know how to create digital notebooks using Evernote.
3. Target audience will be able to share Evernote files and folders with
students and faculty and parents when needed.
4. Target audience will know how to use Evernote on a variety of devices
commonly used for learning such as laptops, iPads, and cell phones.
5. Target audience will be able to teach students the basic functioning of
Evernote and how to review assignment requirements/rubrics, complete
and turn in assignments using Evernote.
Part 2
1. Introduction
The learners in this group are certified middle school teachers who teach a
variety of subjects, grades 6-8. The group is made up of 70% White/NonHispanic and 30% Black/Non-Hispanic. The group consist of 38 certified
teachers, 16% male, 84% female. The demographic information for this learner
analysis came from teacher surveys where teachers self-identified and
questionnaires.
2. Entry Skills/Prerequisite and Prior Knowledge
-All have reliable and consistent access to the Internet
-All have basic computer skills
-All have basic to intermediate skill experience navigating the Internet
-Most have limited experience using web-based technologies and applications
-All have a personal and school based email accounts and can email, attach and
send documents
-Most have little to no experience using Evernote
3. Attitudes Toward Content and Academic Motivation
All of the learners recognize the requirement (through common core standards)
to integrate technology into their daily learning environment. All of the learners
feel a need to use technology in the classroom as a way to support 21st century

learning and to support the technology interests of their students. Some of the
learners (27%) use web-based technologies (for example, Edmodo, Schoology,
Moodle) to support classroom management. However, most (73%) use paper
based classroom management systems. Most learners in the group have a
positive attitude towards using web-based technology to support classroom
management, but they have little exposure and experience to specific
technologies that could help them meet their objectives. 4 of the learners
revealed that they preferred to keep their paper based classroom management
system as the only system used in the classroom, mainly because they feel
overwhelmed by technology and did not want to learn to use or actively use any
more technology in general.
4. Educational Ability Levels
All of the learners in this group have a minimum of a four-year college degree
and a teachers certification. 48% of the learners have an advanced degree such
as a Masters degree or a Specialist degree. All of the learners have had various
amounts on district required technology training.

5. General Learning Preferences

The learners expressed a preference for learning in a guided, group setting
where the instructor could answer questions, as well as independent self guided
learning where they could spend time learning at their own pace. This information
came from learner questionnaire and survey.
6. Attitudes Toward Teachers
This learning group is composed of professional teachers. The whole group
reflected a general satisfaction with the administrators and other faculty members
at the school.

7. Group Characteristics (Social Characteristics/Relevant Cultural

Information)
The learning group is made up of teachers with a variety of teaching experience,
from first year teachers to 25+ years of experience. The school is located in a
residential area of Douglasville, Georgia, in what would be considered a middle
class community. The majority of teachers live in the general vicinity of the
school. The group is made up of 70% White/Non-Hispanic and 30% Black/NonHispanic. The group consists of 38 certified teachers, 16% male, and 84%
female. English is the primary language spoken in the group/school. 5 of the
teachers consider themselves fluent in a language other than English. For most

of the learners being a professional teacher is the only and primary job. 6 of the
learners revealed that they have a second job that is performed outside of their
regular, working school day hours.

KA Part 3 Task Analysis (Procedural Analysis)

I conducted a procedural analysis and a topic analysis to create a
detailed outline of how to use Evernote as a classroom management
tool for teachers. In an attempt to capture each important step, I
opened the application and did a thorough visual survey of the
application, writing down every essential component of the application.
I then created a demo note and digital notebook as a guide to using
Evernote as a lesson management tool, and I documented the steps
required to meet this goal. I did this because everything in Evernote
begins with a note and a digital notebook.
I then attempted to identify the content structure. I identified the facts
as being the vocabulary of Evernote (account, tabs, notebooks,
notes, syncing), and the basic knowledge needed to use this tool
effectively. The concept identified was the idea of Evernote as a notetaking application. For principles/rules I determined that it Evernote is
meant to be shared, edited, and used a collaboration tool. There are
also basic rules for creating an account, uploading data, and sharing
notes/notebooks. The procedures would be the series of steps that it
takes to create a note/notebook.

Objective 1B. To identify Evernote as an online content curation
tool
Objective 1C. To identify Evernote as a note-taking tool and a
classroom management tool
Objective 1D. To differentiate between Evernotes online version
and desktop version
Initial Presentation: In their own words have students define of the
following terms: note, notebook, tag, shortcut, content, curation, web
clipper. Their definitions may or may not have anything to do with
Evernote or an online reference. Show graphic organizer/chart to clarify
the meaning of each term as it relates to Evernote.
Generative Strategy: On a piece of paper have students brainstorm
ways that teachers manage classroom resources. Do they use paper
files, binders, bins, notebooks, desktop, etc? Have students rank (the
effectiveness of those methods) from most effective to least effective.
Discuss how using Evernote could help them to streamline those
methods and is available to them online and offline. To differentiate
have students list their one favorite way to manage resources and their
least favorite way for managing classroom resources.

Lesson 2 How to Create an Account and Access Evernote

Objective 2: To create an account
Objective 2A. To access the online version via the Internet
Objective 2B. To access the desktop version offline
Initial Presentation: Remind students to make sure that Evernote is
accessible from their school. Students should decide whether they
want to use their personal email address or school email address to
create their Evernote account.
Generative Strategy: Have students go to the homepage of
Evernote and follow the steps to create an account. To differentiate,
students can follow a detailed document that lists the steps for
creating an account with images.
Motivational Strategy: Depending on the type of operating system
student is using, have students watch YouTube video, Evernote For
Windows Desktop, or Evernote For Mac Desktop Version. To
differentiate students will have the option of watching the video or
following a step-by-step written guide to using Evernote with their
particular operating system.
Lesson 3: How To Install and Use The Evernote Web Clipper
Objective 5: To Install Evernote Web Clipper
Objective 5A. To choose preferred web browser
Objective 5B. To select web content to clip with web clipper
Objective 5C. To organize web content using Tags
Objective 5D. To choose which notebook web content belongs in
Objective 5E. To sync web content with online and offline
versions of Evernote
Initial Presentation: Discuss the different options of web browsers
and which are compatible with Evernote. Explain the function of the
Evernote web clipper. Have students download the Evernote web
clipper from the Evernote home page.
Generative Strategy: Have students watch the YouTube video,
Capture Everything With the New Evernote Web Clipper. Have
students choose a topic for a lesson they would like to research, or use
a lesson they already have. Students will use the Internet to look for
web content that is relevant to their topic. This might be an

educational website, a math game website, a blog, a photo etc.

Students should then clip that website into their Evernote. Once the
web content has been clipped and sent to Evernote, students will
choose which notebook they want that notebook to appear in. If
needed students will create a new notebook to house the web content
they just clipped.
Lesson 4: How To Create an Evernote Notebook
Objective 4: To set up a new notebook
Objective 4A. To access the notebook template
Objective 4B. Collect notes to include in a notebook
Objective 4C. To demonstrate how to drag and drop a note into a
notebook
Objective 4D. To use the share function to share notebooks with
students and faculty
Initial Presentation: Explain how notebooks are used to store/save
notes and collect content. Review the steps for creating a notebook.
Generative Strategy: Share my Monster Novel Notebook with
students to show the diversity of content that can be saved in a single
notebook. My notebook holds, video content, hyperlinks, website
content, full unit lesson plans, and various other items. Have students
review content in my Monster Novel Notebook. Have students create a
notebook to house the note that they created in objective three. Give
the notebook a title that relates to the saved note from objective three.
For practice, have students create another note related to their theme
and drag and drop the note into the notebook they just created. To
differentiate, have students create a sample notebook and follow a
step-by-step document that illustrates how to drag and drop notes into
notebooks.
Lesson 5: How To Create and Use Notes in Evernote

Objective

3A. To access the new note template

3B. To demonstrate how to sync and save a note
3C. To categorize a note using Tags
3D. To demonstrate use of the share function
3E. To locate notes using the search function

Initial Presentation: Explain to students that a note is considered

anything you write-in, deposit or upload into the Evernote system.
(i.e. notes, pdf files, documents, photos, etc.). Show an example of a
note, and explain how Evernote auto saves and syncs notes.
Generative Strategy: Have students create a real note that they
could possibly use in their classroom. It could be a writing prompt, a
set of math problems, or historical photos they want to share. Students
should create a tag for the note using a search term of their choice
that is relevant to the note. Have students share the note with
themselves by sending it to their school email address or personal
email address so that they can have the full user experience for
sending/sharing notes. To differentiate, have students create a simple
sample note and send to themselves.
