Appendix 5: A Selection of Other

Useful Contact Points, Including

Networks and Websites
In this appendix, data are given on a number of organisations involved in supporting PI, including groupings of PI-active companies. There are also web addresses
of useful patent databases.

A5.1 UK Assistance/Information/Support Programmes

As part of its aim to help move to a low carbon economy in the UK, the Carbon
Trust has an approach to accelerating research towards commercial value the
Directed Research initiative (including Research Acceleration). Its aim is to focus
on overcoming the specific technical barriers that are holding back the next generation of low carbon technologies. A wide range of technologies is part of its brief. It
has included PI.

Includes a PI project the Factory of the Future involving the partners in the technology platform.

Enki (Efficient Networking of Knowledge for Innovation)

www.enki2.com
Enki integrates a risk-analysis and decision-making method, not only in the exploratory phase, but continuously throughout the development phases by an evaluation of ideas and potential invention; risk management tool for innovation projects
and innovation portfolio management. Enki also integrates sustainability thinking
via innovative technologies as an opportunity. The challenge is not only to provide
service to the consumer society, but to perform it with markedly lower reliance on
materials, energy, labour and waste sustainable development and PI are inherent
in the organisations approach.

EFCE (European Federation of Chemical Engineering)

www.efce.info
Since 1953, the European Federation of Chemical Engineering has promoted scientific collaboration and supported the work of engineers and scientists in 28
European countries. Moreover, from the very beginning, Eastern and Central
European countries were included. It has promoted PI activities within the sector.

INERIS (Institut National de lEnvironnement Industriel et des

Risques)
http://www.ineris.fr/en
I studies and research to prevent the risk of economic activities and provide any
benefit to facilitate the adoption by companies of that goal. Safety in processes,
e.g. supercritical processing.

International Energy Agency Heat Pump Implementing

SenterNovem
SenterNovem is an agency of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, promoting
sustainable development and innovation, both within the Netherlands and abroad.

The Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Association.

www.fchea.org
Integral participant of Americas $1.2 billion hydrogen fuel initiative which, as part
of its brief, is examining new, novel (low carbon) technologies for the generation of
hydrogen. The UK Hydrogen association is based in North East England.

A5.3 Patent Sources

As well as protecting your own inventions, be they PI technologies or applications
of PI, a search of patent databases often provides invaluable information on existing
PI technologies. The web has made such searches rapid, cheap and easy to implement. The data below refer to some major patent databases.
Searches can be done on the basis of key words for the technology, patent numbers, (where known), companies or inventors. Care should be taken in ascertaining where free access stops and charges begin, e.g. for ordering the full patent
specification.
www.ipo.gov.uk The UK Patent Office (Intellectual Property Office) has its
own website offering a variety of facilities. Access to patent abstracts and other services is available.
www.espacenet.com This is the website of the European Patent Database that
also lists world and other patents. Easy to use and access is free.
patft.uspto.gov This is the United States Patent and Trademark Office
home page and is the official site for searching the US patent database.
www.delphion.com The Delphion Intellectual Property Network also lists US
patents, searchable by key words, patent numbers, assignees, etc., (charges may be
applicable).

A5.4 Networks
Networks and specialist groups within professional institutions are ideal media
for the dissemination of data of all types on a technology. They thus provide ready
opportunities for those wishing to have an introduction to a technology, and to meet
people with experience of its application, access to funding opportunities and other
technology transfer activities.
There are networks specifically directed at PI, but others have PI as a peripheral interest. It is recommended that those that are interested get in touch with the

relevant contact person or visit the website (where available) to help assess the usefulness and relevance to them. The websites generally have good interactive links to
other sites relevant to PI.
