Inn!to!benefit!our!own!Klinkhart!Hall!Arts!Center;!a!glorious!summer!for!The!
Glimmerglass!Festival,!and!more!!!A!stroll!along!Main!Street!reveals!the!continuing!!
renovations!of!the!Imperial!Bath!House,!an!important!feature!of!the!Sharon!Springs!
revival!!!Albany!Business!Journal!recently!featured!an!article!on!our!village,!rumor!
has!it!that!Howe!Caverns!was!to!be!the!lead!story!until!the!journalist!discovered!

PRESERVATION AWARD FOR NEW YORK HOUSE

!

The!New!York!House!was!proud!to!receive!the!Community!Pillar!
Award!from!Otsego!2000!this!year.!!The!2015!Historic!Preservation!
Awards!of!Otsego!and!Schoharie!Counties!were!presented!on!May!20,!
2016!at!the!Roseboom!Historical!Association.!!
!!!These!awards!honor!individuals!and!groups!in!Otsego!and!Schoharie!
Counties!who!have!worked!to!document,!preserve!and!rehabilitate!the!
historic!homes,!storefronts,!commercial,!and!agricultural!buildings,!as!
well!as!streetscapes!that!contribute!to!our!communities!individual!
sense!of!place.!
!!!The!Community!Pillar!award!was!presented!to!Kelly!and!Bruce!Button!
for!their!rehabilitation!and!reause!of!the!New!York!House!Bed!&!
Breakfast!in!Sharon!Springs.!

RESCUE AT PERMACULTURE INN

September!6th!marked!5!months!since!we!rescued!four!day!old!kittens!
from!a!farmer!who!was!going!to!throw!them!away.!We!had!to!use!the!
smallest!syringe!just!to!feed!them!and!most!people!thought!they!
wouldn't!survive.!Well!all!four!kittens!thrived!and!now!have!taken!over!
the!farmhouse.!We!have!3!girls![Gertrude,!Tuxedo!(Tux)!and!Gremlin]!
and!1!boy,!Ghost.!They!will!be!spayed!and!neutered!in!the!next!few!
weeks!and!will!all!remain!on!the!farm.!It!really!took!a!village!to!raise!
these!kittens!and!we!couldn't!do!it!with!out!all!of!the!help!just!to!learn!
how!to!care!for!them.!!We!have!to!send!a!HUGE!THANK!YOU!to!Linda!
Janczak!with!SCRUFFCATS.org!who!will!be!spaying!and!neutering!the!
kittens!free!of!charge.!Linda!would!also!like!us!to!spread!the!word!about!
her!organization!which!will!come!to!any!farm!to!trap!and!spay/neuter!
feral!or!stray!cats!for!free!and!then!release!them!back!on!the!farm.!This!
is!such!a!great!service!but!Linda!can't!contact!or!solicit!her!services.!
People!need!to!contact!her.!If!you!or!someone!you!know!is!in!need!of!
her!services!please!call!her!@518a868a6902!and!please!tell!her!that!we!
gave!you!her!number.!SCRUFF!is!a!501(c)(3)!notaforaprofit!volunteer!
organization!whose!resources!are!based!on!the!commitment!of!

A New Take on Green Beans by Kathy Merrick

!
!
In!our!Southern!family,!green!beans!were!only!eaten!at!Thanksgiving,!
Christmas,!and!Easter!and!known!as!York!River!Green!Beans,!from!the!Virginia!York!
River!Plantation.!!They!were!always!served!only!one!way:!!2!pounds!of!green!beans!
(ends!snipped)!would!be!cooked!in!boiling,!salted!water.!!Then!drained,!and!tossed!
with!4!slices!of!cooked,!crumbled!bacon,!3!tablespoons!of!the!bacon!drippings,!1!
teaspoon!of!crumbled!rosemary,!and!salt!and!pepper!to!taste.!!Yummy!but!you!can!
hear!your!arteries!closing.!
!
We!are!now!steaming!green!beans!(and!most!other!vegetables)!and!eating!
them!without!the!bacon!and!drippings.!!Using!this!combination!of!seasonings!I!dont!
miss!the!bacon!at!all!!!

2!tablespoons!unsalted!butter,!

Cook!beans!and!drain.!!Melt!butter!and!whisk!in!seasonings.!!Toss!with!green!beans.!!

mound!them!on!the!measuring!spoon,!rather!than!measuring!them!straight!across!
the!spoon.!!Enjoy!!

We!met!Nancy!Pfau!and!her!husband!at!Edgefield!B&B,!where!we!were!
staying.!They!were!over!having!wine!with!the!owner!of!the!B&B!and!
then!the!next!day!we!had!Nancy!sign!a!book!after!she!spoke!at!the!
festival.*She*even*helped*our*daughter*with*a*school*project.*
!Later&we&saw&them&again&and&other&locals&at&a&barn&dinner&that&
was$done$by$chef$Stuart$$(not$to$mention$the$incredible$meal$at$the$
American)Hotel)and)the)farm)tour)and)Farmer)John)and)Polka)Spot).)!
