Introduction
The turbine wash will always create stresses to the material but the benefit from a
clean turbine outweighs the negative influences from the turbine wash. Washing at too
high material temperature might cause cracks and deformation.
The Wrtsil Turbocharger Wash (WTW) unit (see Figure 1) is a simple means to
reduce stresses to the turbochargers during the turbine wash cycle. With a correct
wash sequence the turbocharger efficiency as well as the component lifetime will be
safe guarded.

Figure 1, Wrtsil Turbocharger Wash (WTW)

By PLC control the wash sequence will be repeatable, always using the correct
parameters regarding temperature and stabilization, hence avoiding the risk for human
error. An internal timer keeps track of the interval for both turbine and compressor
wash.

Recommendation
Establish the routines described in section Regular routines to ensure a reliable
function of the wash unit.

Regular routines
Daily inspections/routines
Check for evident leaks on the water and the air system.
Drain the filter in the air supply line, if fitted.
Functionality test every 4000 running hours
ATTENTION:
The engine must be stopped when performing the WTW functionality test. Keep the
water and the air supply on to the wash unit.

Check for water leaks.

Use soap water to check for leaks on the air supply.
Check the electrical cabling.
Disconnect the flexible hoses from 502 (Turbine cleaning), 509 (Compressor
cleaning) and 614 (Purge air) on the engine (see Figure 2). Use a bucket or other
container to collect the water running from the hoses during the test.
At this stage no water nor air should come from any of the flexible hoses.
Make a jumper in the BJA panel to by-pass the control contact and connect 24 V to
the BLW connection box on the WTW, terminal X1:9 (= V005). See example in
enclosure A and enclosure B.

NOTE:
Terminal numbers are site specific. Check the correct terminal numbers from the site
documentation.

Connect jumpers from V005 (terminal X1:9) in the BLW box to V001 (terminal X1:1)
and to V002 (terminal X1:3).
o Water should now run out from the flexible hose for turbine wash (502).
o Check that no water is running from any hose when only one of the valves is
engaged.

Connect jumpers from V005 (terminal X1:9) to V001 (terminal X1:1) and to V004
(terminal X1:7).
o Water should now run out from the flexible hose for compressor wash (509).
o Check that no water is running from any hose when only one of the valves is
engaged.

Connect jumpers from V005 (terminal X1:9) to V003 (terminal X1:5) and to V004
(terminal X1:7).
o Air should now blow from the flexible hose for compressor wash (509).
o Check that no air is blowing from any hose when only one of the valves is
engaged.

Connect jumpers from V005 (terminal X1:9) to V003 (terminal X1:5) and to V002
(terminal X1:3).
o Air should now blow from the flexible hose for turbine wash (502).
o Check that no air is blowing from any hose when only one of the valves is
engaged.

INSTRUCTIONS
WS15Q344, Issue 1, Page 4 / 4+2
NOTE:
Additional if the V006 is a solenoid valve:
Connect jumpers from V005 (terminal X1:9) to V006 (terminal X1:11) and to V002
(terminal X1:3).
o Air should now blow from the flexible hose for turbine wash (502) and from the
flexible hose for purge air (614).
