HEMPEL'S EPOXY 438US is a two-component, amine adduct-cured epoxy with a high solids
content. It forms a very hard-wearing coating that is resistant to a wide range of chemicals.

New steel: Abrasive blasting to SSPC-SP 10. Surface profile should be equivalent to
Keane-Tator Comparator, 5.5 G/S.
Maintenance: Remove oil, grease, etc. with suitable detergent. Remove salt and other contaminants
by high-pressure fresh water cleaning. Any residues from the cargo must be completely removed by
decontamination procedure. Remove all rust and other loose material by abrasive blasting to
SSPC-SP 10 or power tool cleaning of minor damaged areas as per SSPC-SP 11. Feather edges to
sound and intact areas. Dust off residues. Touch up to full film thickness.
APPLICATION
CONDITIONS:
Use only where application and curing can proceed at temperatures above 10C/50F. The
temperature of the surface and that of the paint itself must also be above this limit. Apply only on a
clean and dry surface with a temperature above the dew point to avoid condensation. In confined
spaces, provide adequate ventilation during application and drying.

REMARKS:
Other cargoes:
Consult your HEMPEL representative for a specification and details on cargo resistance.
Certain cargoes tend to hydrolyze in the presence of water and form organic and inorganic acids.
These acids might damage the coating. Therefore; a) contact of these cargoes and water should be
avoided, b) the tank must be completely dry before loading, c) water contamination during tank
operation and storage is to be avoided.
Service
temperatures:
The natural tendency of epoxy coatings to become more sensitive to mechanical damage and
chemical exposure at elevated temperatures is also reflected in this product.
Film thicknesses:
May be specified in another film thickness than indicated depending on purpose and area of use. This
will alter spreading rate and may influence drying time and overcoating interval. Normal range is
100-150 microns/4.0-6.0 mils.
Recoating:
The best time for overcoating is when the paint film is still slightly tacky. This curing stage is reached
after approximately 8 hours at 20C/68F under good ventilation. If the maximum overcoating interval
is exceeded, roughening of the surface is necessary to insure intercoat adhesion. Before overcoating
after exposure in contaminated environment, clean the surface thoroughly by high-pressure fresh
water cleaning and allow to dry.
A tendency to chalk in outdoor exposure does not detract from the protective properties.
