ARTICLE BEGINNING
WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and
carefully follow all WARNINGS and SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.
The main components of Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)
include a driver-side air bag module (located in center of steering
wheel), passenger side air bag module (located inside instrument
panel, above glove box), side air bag modules (located in both front
doors and optionally in both rear doors also), head protection system
(located around top of front door opening), electronic SRS control
unit, contact ring, energy capacitor/voltage transformer (integrated
into SRS control unit), SRS warning light, driver-side knee bolster
mounted under steering column, seat belt contacts, and Emergency
Tensioning Retractor (ETR) seat belt assemblies. For SRS to operate
properly, 3-point seat belts must be worn.
When SRS control unit senses an impact, it transmits a
voltage signal to gas generator pellets in air bag modules and the ETR
seat belt assemblies. The voltage signal ignites gas generator pellets
to produce a quantity of non-toxic nitrogen gas.
In the air bag modules, the nitrogen gas passes through a
tiny filter to fill and deploy the air bags in about 30 milliseconds.
After the air bags inflate to maximum expansion, the nitrogen gas is
released away from driver through 2 ventilation holes in rear of air
bag. The air bag inflation and collapse sequence takes about 30-35
milliseconds.
In the Emergency Tensioning Retractor (ETR) seat belt
assembly, the ignited nitrogen gas forces a piston to be driven
downward in a tube attached to seat belt assembly. Piston has a cable
attached to it. Cable pulls on seat belt reel, increasing seat belt
tension and holding front seat occupant(s) tightly against seat
backrest.
SRS ACTIVATION
more severe frontal impact, passenger-side air bag will deploy. Seat
belt contact micro-switches are also used to control emergency
tensioning retractors. SRS control unit will only deploy belt
tensioning retractors on belts that are buckled. In the event a
frontal impact occurs while SRS control unit detects faults in any
sensors, control unit will deploy all air bags and emergency
tensioning retractors in seat belts.
CONTACT RING
Side air bag modules are installed behind door trim panel on
both front doors. They are accessible by removing door trim panel of
appropriate door. Side air bag module consists of an inflatable air
bag, gas generator, and igniter. Air bag fully inflates in about 35
milliseconds. Gas is then released through a filtered vent on the back
side of the air bag, causing it to deflate.

Disconnect Orange SRS connector. Remove glove box and disconnect both
Orange SRS connectors from passenger-side air bag module. System is
now disabled.
WARNING: Air bag module and ETR unit must be deployed before disposal.
Disposing of undeployed components may violate federal, state
and/or local laws. This also applies to vehicles that are to
be scrapped.
DEPLOYED AIR BAG MODULE & ETR UNIT
Deployed air bag modules and ETR units are not classified as
hazardous material; dispose of them like any other part.
Removal
Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See
SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable air bag system. See procedures under
DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove air bag module. See
DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. Remove steering wheel. See procedures
under STEERING WHEEL. Remove contact ring cover and ground wire screw.
Remove mounting screws and contact ring. See Fig. 2.
shipping lock pin. DO NOT remove lock pin until contact ring is
attached to steering wheel. Install contact ring and reinstall screws
holding ring to wheel hub. Pinch ends of locking pin with a pliers and
remove. Reverse remainder of removal procedure and ensure system is
functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.
DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE
Removal
1) Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See
SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable air bag system. See procedures under
DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
2) Remove air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE.
Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Remove steering
wheel hub nut. Note how spring/clip lock is holding contact ring in
center position. See Fig. 6. Mark steering wheel hub in relation to
steering shaft for installation reference.
3) Unlock spring/clip lock before pulling off steering wheel
by prying spring/clip lock out with small blade screwdriver. Pull
steering wheel off by hand, or if necessary, use appropriate steering
wheel puller. Carefully guide contact ring wiring up through steering
column, while removing steering wheel/contact ring.
Installation
1) Viewing bottom of steering wheel, if contact ring is not
centered (arrows do not line up), adjust contact ring before
completing steering wheel installation. See CONTACT RING under
ADJUSTMENTS.
2) Guide contact ring wiring down through column. Position
steering wheel onto shaft splines using reference mark for realignment
positioning. At same time, accurately align column locking pins into
opening in contact ring on bottom of steering wheel.
3) Install and tighten steering wheel hub nut to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Connect horn wiring. Install
air bag module. Activate air bag system. Ensure system is functioning
properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.
