Lighting that supports life

SOLARIS

When assessing Operating Theatre lighting, one needs to pay extra attention to a few factors
that are crucial to the efficiency and performance of the light. To mention but a few of these
factors: light colour intensity, colour temperature, light performance, heat obstruction,
shadow free lighting, uninterrupted illumination and ease of maintenance.

OPERATING THEATRE LIGHTS

OPERATING THEATRE LIGHTS

COLOUR INTENSITY
To accurately assess the environment, colour and contours of the human body, the light
intensity should resemble daylight. The brightness of the sun at midday is equivalent to
100,000 lux, the Solaris range offers an intensity of up to 140,000 lux.

LIGHT PERFORMANCE
Light emitted should penetrate deep into the operating field, creating a homogeneous light
column. Solaris releases ten million light rays, traveling through eighty facets thus creating a
homogeneous light cylinder through a distance of 600 to 1400mm into the operating area.
HEAT OBSTRUCTION
Operating theatre lights must ensure a cool and comfortable environment, despite lengthy
surgical procedures to prevent surfaces of human body tissue from drying out. The Solaris
cool filtering system also acts as an infrared absorption system, and temperature rise is
reduced to a minimum.
SHADOW-FREE LIGHTING
Lighting in the operating room should not create shadows, which could affect the procedure
adversely. The Solaris range prevents shadow creation by its light emitting surface and
guiding technique.

EXAMPLES OF SOLARIS COMBINATIONS

UNINTERRUPTED LIGHTING AND EASE OF MAINTENANCE

Lighting in a critical healthcare environment must be hassle-free and reliable. Solaris 700/500
has a switchover mechanism, that is automatically activated in the event of lamp failure.
Lamp replacement requires no tools and bulbs are available locally.

EXAMINATION LIGHTS

HEAD OR WALL CONTROL UNIT

Various light functions can be controlled directly at the lamp cupola or with the help of a
remote terminal. All functions are described by user-friendly symbols on the terminals. An
external power box supplies all the electronic circuits. A lighting system always consists of two
independent systems, and one light can be set up for a camera system to allow for live recording
sessions during surgery. The light functions include:
.

1. MAJOR ACADEMIC THEATRE

700/500/monitor & camera
(Up to 3 light heads and 1 monitor
combination available)

PROCEDURE & MATERNITY LIGHTS

COLOUR TEMPERATURE
When assessing the quality of the light, one needs to understand that the light temperature
will establish the optimum situation, where the human eye can see better and perceive colour
as white. This happens at about 5,600 Kelvin, which resembles daylight. Studies have shown
that for the operating theatre environment, light temperature of at least 4,000 Kelvin must
be provided; Solaris 700/500 operating theatre lights deliver colour temperature of 4,300
Kelvin.

6. Round handles, offer ease of cleaning. The handle grip

allows non-sterile surgical nurses to reach out and move
the light head as required by the surgeon. There are no
sharp edges.

1. Sealed housing coated to resist damage from cleaning

agents.
2. Various functions can be controlled directly on the light
head unit or from a wall control unit.

EXAMINATION LIGHTS

7. Each light has an unique serial number to monitor

inspection intervals.

3. The removable handle is tested and approved to PEI

anti-bacterial plastic specifications and is designed to
withstand 134 C.

8. The arms ensure stability and manoeuvrability, by

making use of needle bearings.

4. The reflector plate is manufactured from 99,9% pure

aluminium providing the highest obtainable reflection
grade.

9. A customised combination of the Solaris 700 and 500

can be configured from 1 to 3 light heads, including the
option of an integrated camera with monitor system.

5. The glass, commonly known as Cathedral glass, is

manufactured using a special heating and compression
process which provides a scratch resistant surface.
The glass is non-reflective ensuring a comfortable
environment for patients undergoing local anaesthesia
procedures.
