MMRDA has proposed to construct the 20-km elevated monorail, the first such
project in India which would start at Jacob Circle in south Mumbai and terminate at Chembur via Wadala. The Rs. 2,460-crore project, awarded to Larsen
and Toubro and Malaysia-based Scoomi Engineering, is to be completed in 30
months.
As part of the monorail project a casting yard is proposed to be constructed
near Wadala (W). The casting yard is expected to carry a total load of 20T
coming from the gantry. The casting yard will be constructed in stages and the
first phase of casting yard has an area of 64m X 15m. The existing soil on site
was very loose, which is unable to carry the load due to Gantry.
Solution:
It is proposed to replace the existing soil with good frictional soil along with
some reinforcement to enhance its load carrying capacity. Hence approximately
800mm soil is dug out and replaced with frictional soil. A soil is placed in three
different layers Ist Layer 300mm,IInd Layer 250mm and IIIrd Layer 250mm.
A layer of Woven Geotextile is placed after IST layer of frictional soil and above
that other layers of frictional fill area supposed to be placed with proper compaction.
