Blooded Mounts

{Idea By Mark Muncy}

The battle of Mount Deismaar is legendary as are the heroes who fought there. The battle
created the bloodlines that define our world and the noble lineages that all are familiar
with; however, not many know of the noble mounts that fought with those men at the battle.
These mounts have bloodlines of their own. Each steed bred of their line is worth a King's
ransom. Only a handful of these proud creatures exist.
In an effort to make this document more useful to the DM, I have transcribed the rest of
this section in AD&D 2nd Ed. form. -Lycaeon

These beasts are slightly faster and sturdier than that of a typical heavy warhorse. Many
were bred to other fantastic mounts and bred and cross bred until they became magical
horses. Depending on the animal's bloodline derivation the steed may have more unique
powers. The inbreeding was so far in the past that few, if any, physical traits remain
from the crossbreed. DM's are encouraged to create each blooded mount individually.
Typical powers include:
Coronos: Ancient Mearh (Mearas pl.) in bloodline. Horse has INT 4, and is VERY long lived,
up to 100 years.
Andolus: Centaur and Asperii in bloodline. Horse has high intelligence, INT 8, and can
understand complex commands and training.
Andurias: Dragonhorse in bloodline. 1 extra hit die and a Protection from evil 10' radius
surrounds the horse and rider.
Aqualund: Hippocampus in bloodline. Horse will walk (ride) on water unless it wills not
to, can also breathe water 1/day.
Atropos: Phooka in bloodline. Horse can Blur 3/day, Mirror Image (2 copies) 3/day, or
Blink 3/day.
Avalont: Firemare in bloodline. Horse touches on Ethereal plane and can ride at twice the
speed of normal horses.
Azrai: Nightmare in bloodline, almost always black in color. Causes a fear aura as per the
spell.
Basaia: Unicorn in bloodline. Can heal rider 1d10 hp per day.
Brenna: Spirithorse in bloodline. Most are white in color. Horse and rider cannot be held,
slowed, or entangled.
Gasu: Pegasus in bloodline. Horse will featherfall when falling unless it wills not to.
Gnyin: Phooka in bloodline. Horse rides under Hallucinatory Terrain and cannot be
tracked.
Masela: Faerie Horse in bloodline. Horse and rider cannot be surprised except on a roll of
1.
Reynir: Thestral in bloodline. Horse and rider can track without error as per the spell.
Sanguina: Ghost Mount and Dragonhorse in bloodline, always black in color. Causes a fear
aura as per the spell, protection from good 10 radius surrounds the horse and
rider, 1 extra hit die.
Sleipnirkin: These horses are obviously different from other horses. They are the normal
mortal offspring of Sleipnir, and have eight legs. They are very large,
uncomfortably so for small riders. Their gaits, however, are more smooth and
comfortable for wide legged riders. They can carry far heavier loads up to 1,500

pounds on their backs as they weigh as much as 4,000 pounds. For this reason they
are the preferred mount of giants. They are capable of four legged attacks in front
as they can stand up on their back legs and kick, not twice, but four times with
their front feet. They also have four kick bucking rear attacks. Lastly, they can be
trained to stand up on all four rear feet so the rider can be pushed up and use the
horse as a platform. They run 30% faster than a normal horse.
Vorynn: Kirin in bloodline. Horse and rider get +3 to all saves versus magical attacks.
Blooded mounts should only be found after a grueling ordeal to gain them. They generally
bond with their owner and are thus never sold. Many are bred for specific nobles.
Introduce them as sparingly as you would any artifact.
