Coach White displayed effective verbal behavior when he communicated

with his daughter. Being able to express yourself clearly and being able to
listen well can help you avoid a great deal of stress in your closest
relationship. Verbal communication describes the verbal exchange of
information, emotions, thoughts, and perceptions. It includes speeches,
presentations, conversations, and discussions. Body language and tone of
voice play a significant role in how oral communication is perceived. Since
oral communication almost always involves the simultaneous transmission
and receipt of a message, feedback from the receiver is immediate.
Verbal communication is essentially
using language while interacting with
others. Though the word verbal may
imply it must be spoken, verbal
communication can bridge through
multiple media, including email and
phone conversations.
There are five characteristics of
language:

1. Symbolic- We use words as symbols

representing people, places, feelings
2. Governed by rules- Rules govern meanings of words and structures of
sentences.
3. Flexible- People often change words to mean other things, cool can
mean cold or good.

4. Cultural- All cultures have different ways of communicating whether it be

language change or social norms.
5. Always evolving- We are constantly adding new words to our
vocabulary.
Verbal communication skills can be defined as the spoken language used to
express thoughts, ideas and feelings. It is one of the most crucial aspects in
a human beings life especially in the teaching and learning process.
Although verbal messages is the main tool used in connecting two
individuals, other types of communication such as non-verbal cues, listening,
as well as clarification skills need to work together in order for effective
communication to occur. Breakdown in communication often arises due to
poor word choices, different perspectives and opinions, language barriers as
well as bad communication techniques.
One has to speak in a manner that can be understood by the listener. You
should always be conscious of words that you are going to use. When the
other party is speaking, you should listen intently and understand what is
trying to be conveyed before answering. While you are explaining yourself,
try asking for verbal acknowledgements to ensure that the other person
understands what has been said. This will maintain a steady flow of
communication. Besides that, one should always remember to speak with
etiquette. Due to globalization, organizations set up businesses all over the
world and tend to hire employees from different cultural background. It is
important for each individual to understand appropriate speaking code and
cultural diversity in order to work together. Finally, organized your thoughts
and used proper word choices for a clutter-free communication and easy
reception of what is trying to be conveyed.
