explain soul retrieval.) Ive never quite gotten into the

ancient disciplines that have become the new normal,
like yoga (SoulCycles my jam) or meditation (I tried
really!), but I thought, as the writer rst did, Why not?
So when spiritual healer Deborah Hanekamp came to
my home in Brooklyn, I found myself more than curious
about what the next hour and a half would entail.
After reading my aura, Deborah said she was receiving
a strong visual of me in Central Park (our office has a
view!) and horseback riding (a childhood passion). She
suggested I spend more time in nature, among numerous
other insights, and prescribed me a bath of rose petals
and Himalayan salt. My daughters response when I came
downstairs? Mommy, you look so calm. Whats wrong?
I still dont know what a soul retrieval is, but I can assure
you I left Deborahs reading feeling serene and brimming
with new condence.
Nothing like rubbing elbows with the most fabulous
young women in entertainment to make you feel in need
of condence! May cover stars Kylie Jenner, Zendaya,
Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Hailey Baldwin were all on hand
at the Sunset Tower Hotel in L.A. for our Fresh Faces
party, along with our online Fresh Face, Nicola Peltz.
(Fifth May cover girl Ellie Goulding was on tour.) Gugu
was one of the rst to arrive and stunned us all with her
beaming smile. Friends Kylie and Hailey playfully mugged
in the Coach photo booth. And how sweet that Hailey
brought her dad, Stephen Baldwin, as did Zendaya, who
captured the night for our Snapchat, so that you could be
there with us, well, in spirit.

he calendar may say summer, but

pretty soon, believe it or not, the
clothes we saw on the fall runways in
February will be making their way into
stores. We showcase our favorite looks
from the collections in Rebel Rebel
(page 104), so named because of all the
print-clashing, texture-mixing, shapeshifting, and rule-breaking going on. Some pieces will seem
familiar but have an of-kilter twist, like a menswear blazer
in an upholstery-inspired fabric; plush coats in an electric
palette of yellow, purple, and sky blue; skirts so voluminous,
they put the max in maxi skirts. These clothes are anything
but quietthey pulse with fresh vibrancy and energy.
Youd be surprised how many times I see something in
the magazine and say, I want that. (Lately Ive been
wearing a pair of Fendi slides I rst saw in a recent issue.)
I may work here, but like you, Im also a reader who
discovers a new look, place to visit, TV show to stream, or
beauty product to try on these pages. This months Spirited
Away (page 122), about women seeking guidance from
shamans, came to us from a writer whose life changed for
the better after having her chakras cleansed. (My comments
on the rst draft of the story included things Ive never

NONSTOP FLIGHT
Just wanted to say kudos for the May 2016 issue.
Its rare for me to read any magazine in its
entirety. This month was probably the first time
that I couldnt put it down. After the pilot on
my flight announced that we were number 15
in line to take off, I was the only one not groaning,
because it gave me more time to finish reading
the issue! Keep up the good work.

I commend Jason Motlagh and Suez Taylor for
this powerful piece [The Abortion Outlaws].
Reproductive freedom shouldnt be a political

HAIR: To achieve Livelys voluminous locks, hairstylist Rod Ortega distributed

a shine serum through her damp hair and then blowdried it with a mediumsize round brush. He then wrapped small sections around hot rollers and
left them in for 15 minutes. After misting on a hairspray, Ortega used a paddle
brush to soften the resulting curls, creating movable texture that you can
run your hands through, he explains. MAKEUP: Makeup artist Elaine Offers
kept the focus on the actresss eyes with a subtly smoky bronze palette
thats perfect for summer: She blended dark-brown eyeshadow into the
creases for definition, then added a metallic taupe powder on the upper
lids and lower lashlines. The taupe had a luminous sheen that picked up
the light beautifully on set, says Offers. A swipe of black mascara provided
a finishing touch. NAILS: To complement the luxe clothes at the shoot,
manicurist Elle painted on a custom chevron pattern by applying one coat
of an opalescent white base shade, then used a striping brush dipped in
a pale-pink color to draw V shapes on each nail. A sheer peach hue
polished off the look. Perfection. Claire Fontanetta

Here, MC Creative
Director Nina Garcia
sits down with the

Evelynes office
at Sandros Paris
headquarters

Nina Garcia: WHY DID YOU BECOME A DESIGNER?

Evelyne Chtrite: When I met my husband at university,

he had just created a ready-to-wear business. In my

free time, I would go to his ateliers and experiment with
designing clothes, which really triggered my creative
spirit. Ilan Chtrite: I started selling clothes I created at
age 13. I studied economics at university and knew that I
wanted to design and sell my own collections one day.
NG: HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME?
EC: I met a sweet boy named Sandro when I was younger.
NG: DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN PROCESS. EC: We

are inspired by artpostmodern art, fairs like Frieze

and FIAC (International Fair of Contemporary Art), and
galleries in Saint-Germain-des-Prs. In the studio, Im a
bit monomaniacal I eat tuna salad from the Water Bar
at Colette every day. IC: Chet Baker and Miles Davis are
always playing in the mens studio!
NG: WHAT INSPIRED YOU FOR FALL? EC: Urban
cultureclothes with a 90s London influence you
can mix with more delicate, feminine pieces for a new
attitude. IC: The buzz of the city and urban structures.

NG: WHAT THREE ITEMS SHOULD EVERY GIRL

HAVE IN HER CLOSET? EC: A cashmere sweater, a
black evening dress, and a sleek pantsuit.
NG: WHATS YOUR DAILY ROUTINE? EC: I wake up

at 6:45 a.m. To open my eyes, I need coffee. Then I make

breakfast and listen to the news on the radio while I dress.
IC: I bike to work along the river Seine every morning.
The view is beautiful, especially when the sun is shining.
NG: HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME?
EC: I visit galleries and art fairs. I also love spending
time with my family (I have four children). IC: I enjoy

being active and do various sports like running or

boxing. Whatever I can do to help clear my mind.
NG: WHERE DOES A REAL PARISIAN GO IN
PARIS? EC: [Porte de] Clignancourt flea market, outside
the city. You can find the most incredible furniture there.
Very inspiring! IC: Le Maraison every corner, there are
charming hotels and bistros. I like Le Progrs on rue de
Bretagne or Le Rouquet on boulevard Saint-Germain.
NG: WHERE DO YOU GO TO GET AWAY? EC: As a
designer, its hard to actually get away. Something always
catches your eye and inspires youthere is no escape! But
we love Thailand, Israel, and Morocco, where I was born.
NG: IN ANOTHER LIFE, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
EC: I would still choose a creative fieldmaybe art.
IC: Architecture!
NG: WHATS IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE?
Both: We want to keep designing quality collections that

make people happy. Wed also like to see Sandro expressed

as a lifestyle: a vision of the brand beyond a clothing line.

THERE WAS A RICHNESS TO

EVERYTHING THAT WALKED THE
RUNWAYS THIS SEASON
NOT JUST IN THE MATERIALS
(hello, velvet, suede, and lace), but also in the
inspiration. From madcap, vintage-loving
magpies to futuristic gamer types, personalities Creative Director
NINA GARC IA
proved to be promising points of departure.
But instead of simply asking what these girls want to wear,
designers went further, wondering: Who are they inside? What
makes them happy? What do they love? At times dark and
romantic, at others lighthearted and quirky, this seasons
clothes felt more personal. And to me, that is the essence of
fashion. If youre investing in something and putting it on your
body, it needs to feel special. As my mother would say, If it
doesnt make you want to dance around and celebrate, its not
worth it. Who isnt on board with that? @ninagarcia

According to historians, the first button ever discovereda rounded shell

found in the ancient Indus Valley (now southern Asia) dating back 5,000
years to the Bronze Agefunctioned more as a decorative accent than
a fastener. In 1806, when Lewis and Clark led their expedition crossing
the western United States, they traded buttons with Native Americans in
exchange for food. And institutions from the Metropolitan Museum of
Art to the Victoria and Albert Museum keep buttons in their permanent
collections. Now, Van Cleef & Arpels is continuing the tradition of buttons
as treasure with Bouton dor (French for gold button), a series of pieces
constructed entirely of tiny gold disks. Jewelry from the brands archives
featuring similar circular clusters (like a ballerina brooch) inspired the 10
styles, from collar necklaces to statement bracelets to cocktail rings. The
pieces were crafted using hundreds of roundseach shaped and polished
by hand before being carefully fitted with a center diamondto create a
sense of movement, or as Van Cleef & Arpels international president and
CEO, Nicolas Bos, describes it: a fluid, fabric-like quality. No wonder they
wear so well. Heather Furlow

JEWELRY CRUSH

Get your shine on in Harry Winstons

new diamond collection

Whats a party without a little sparkle? Not much, if you ask Harry Winston. Since the
enterprising son of Ukrainian immigrants established his company in 1932, the name
has been synonymous with Hollywood glamour. You could even argue that he invented
it: The jeweler was the first to loan diamonds to an actress on the red carpet (Jennifer
Jones at the 1944 Oscars, who won best actress for The Song of Bernadette), and now
its hard to imagine an awards show without them. To honor its founders love for
celebrations (particularly philanthropic onesHarry Winston has been lending jewels
to charitable galas since 1947 and last year partnered with amfAR to become its top
supporter in finding a cure for AIDS), the house has launched Sparkling Cluster, a
glittery new selection for just such special occasions. The five styles, from a 15.32-carat
pendant necklace to wing-shaped drop earrings, feature a mix of round and pear-cut
diamonds that seem to float against the wearer, says Harry Winston CEO Nayla
Hayek. Red carpet or not, this feels like a win. Carolina ONeill

DEREK LAM
The master of feminine classics
canvased mid-century art
to crat 60s sportswear for fall
Of all Derek Lams virtues, being able to unplug isnt
one. With two namesake labels (including his diffusion
line, Derek Lam 10 Crosby) and multiple collaborations
(athletic wear and fragrances, to name a few), the
designer cant stop carrying my notebook, he says.
I have to tell myself to live in the moment and not
constantly use everythingan art exhibit, a movie, a
bookas inspiration. Well, that has yet to take. Struck
by the form, balance, and joy in Alexander Calders
mobiles and Richard Avedons photographs, Lam sent
mod coats, midi-length skirts, and flared pantsuitsin
predominantly black, navy, gray, red, and ivory shades
(a nod to Calders oft-used palette), mixed with modular
graphic printsdown a matching striped runway.
Textiles like scribble-print knitwear had a cerebral
quality, while patchwork mink and sequined crochet
skewed romantic. For the Parsons graduate, 50, whose
Chinese-born grandparents ran a bridal dress factory
in the Bay Area and whose parents imported clothing
there from Asia (They taught me the value of accomplishing things on my own, he says), next on the to-do
list is ramping up accessories, which for fall included
block-heeled booties and menswear-style loafers. Lams
approach every season, however, remains the same: I
start by asking: Whats going to turn my clients eye?
He always seems to have the answer. Carolina ONeill

I meet many women who shy away from loud prints and
colors, worried that theyll draw too much attention. Girl,
youre gorgeous and deserve attention. That said, here are
my tips for looking effortlessly chic as you rock a bold look.
1) When mixing prints, choose a unifying color in both
to pull it all together. 2) Proportions matterwear bigger
patterns on the bottom, smaller patterns on top. 3) Treat
stripes and animal prints as neutrals! (Pair a hot-pink
cheetah pencil skirt with a solid sweater, for example.)

PROFILE

In February 2015, Italian-born Federica Marchionni,

the former head of Dolce & Gabbana USA and senior
vice president of Ferrari, was named CEO of Lands End.
Her task: Amp up the style quotient of a brand best
known for its khaki-and-canvas roots. This past
February, she ignited a firestorm by featuring legendary
feminist and outspoken pro-choice advocate Gloria
Steinem in the Lands End spring catalog. (The move
angered the brands more conservative customers.) Now,
she shares her side of the story and other lessons shes
culled as a fashion groundbreaker.
My mission for Lands End is to build a meaningful
global lifestyle brand. We just launched our Canvas collection this spring. It was designed in America and developed in Italy. Its a line that appeals to a younger, more
fashion-conscious customer, and makes Lands End a
more robust brand. Kids are with us until they are about
12 or 13, but then they dont return to us until they
are parents. The moms who
shop for kids dont shop as
much for themselves. So I
said, Whoa. We can make
something to appeal to the
customer base we already
have, but then expand.
Our founder used the
catalog to give customers
information about more than just our products. So we
decided to do a series of interviews with people involved
in important causes. We wanted Oprah and Derek Jeter,
too. Our intention was to have different voices representing different things.
One of the biggest topics in the world right now is
womens equality. Its something I take personally. As
CEO, I am asked, What are you wearing?do they
ever ask this question to men? So with only womens
equality in mind, we had the opportunity to have Gloria
Steinem in the catalog wearing Lands End as the first
in the series. Everyone at the company was happy with it.
The catalog went out on a Friday. Early the next week,
we realized there was a problem. People were coming out
very strongly against us on Facebook, saying, Oh, you
are for abortion. That was never our intentionwe
didnt even mention abortion. I come from Rome, and I
know the church. We took a stance to support womens
equality. We were surprised. No one felt good about it.
As this was happening, I had to go to California to
give a speech at Stanford University. I was trying to
remain focused and prepare for the talk, which, ironically, was about perfectionism. Im always saying that
perfection doesnt exist. Excellence is good enough. It
was a good lesson for me to give myself at the time.
Our customers told us that the [Steinem] feature was
not something they appreciated. Its not our intention
to offend anyone, so we decided to take the interview off
our website and issue an apology. This made people on

the other side of the abortion debate angry. But, again,

we never intended to raise that issue.
People say, Well, you apologized, so you are a
coward. Apologizing is not weak. Apologizing is good.
Apologizing is power. Apologizing is being brave. By
saying sorry, I am not saying I dont support women
thats a different thing. Our objective was to raise
awareness of womens equality. And we did that.
I was not the obvious choice [for Lands End]. I
grew up in Italy in a very little country village called
Santa Severa. But the first time I went to Lands End
headquartersin Dodgeville, Wisconsinit was like
going home. They all look like my family. My cousin,
my uncle. All very good people whom you can trust
completely and you can love.
I am a self-made person, the first in my village to
graduate college. I have had to be strong. I started my
career in mobile, working for Samsung and Ericsson.
I met the designers [Domenico] Dolce and [Stefano]
Gabbana by chance, on a
plane. When I told my boss
I was leaving to work for
them, he said, You are
playing Russian roulette
with your career! But I
went for it anyway.
I worked my way up in
the Italian world. On my
first day at Ferrari, I was the only woman in a board
meeting, and the chairman asked, Who is that
woman?! It ended up being an amazing experience.
I was the head of everything that was not a car
sweatshirts, bikes, toys, watchesnegotiating deals
with CEOs of other brands.
[The Steinem controversy] isnt the first bump Ive
experienced in my career. Not that Im used to it, but I
can say that I have experienced it. My approach is to
stay calm in the moment and stay close to my people
youre stronger together. But I wasnt worried about
myself. I was worried about my people.
Customer service is at the heart of Lands End. I
knew this before I became CEO because I myself was a
customer. I bought my sons school uniforms there and
have always been impressed. Even in this online age,
the Lands End toll-free number is one of the most
important parts of our businessand one of the things
we are most proud of. I felt devastated for the customer
service team since they were the ones on the phones,
and theyd never really faced this kind of crisis. I left
California and took a red-eye to Wisconsin to be with
them and let them know wed get through this together.
A few months have now passed. I would not say we
are out of the storm just yet, but I think we are out of
the peak. Our team has come together. They now see
me as one of them. Thats what you get when you share
a problem like that. So even if we still have critics, we
know that we have heart. We can do anything.

Marchionnis direction,

WHAT INFORMED, SAVVY WOMEN

NEED TO KNOW NOW

TRENDS, NEWSMAKERS, CONVERSATION STARTERS

Back in 2000, when Hope Solo joined the U.S.
womens national soccer team as a goalie,
what shed be paid to play a sport shed loved
since she was 5 years old wasnt on her mind.
I was just trying to make the roster, she
says. It wasnt until shed been playing for
about five years that she started asking
questions about the teams compensation.
Ive been fighting this fight for about a
decade, Solo, now 34, says. I was constantly
trying to stir the pot and ask questions people
werent asking. It didnt always go over well,
but I always had a bigger sense of what
women should fight for.
Now, Solo is no longer alone. In March,
she and four teammates filed a complaint
with the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission (EEOC) alleging gender discrimination because, as part of the top-ranked
womens team in the worldwith three World
Cup wins and four Olympic gold medalsthey
are tired of being paid less than the players on
the mens national team, which has never won
a World Cup tournament. The complaint is an
attempt to force the U.S. Soccer Federation to
compensate them equally, but if they have to,
they say, the entire team is willing to boycott
next months Olympic Games in Brazil.

[CONTINUED FROM P. 65]

This is not something I take

lightlyI want to play in the
Olympicsbut I stand with my
team, and what my team decides
to do is what Ill decide, says
forward Alex Morgan, 27, one of
the complainants. What were
fighting for is bigger than us and
womens sports; its about women
receiving dollar for dollar, not 79
cents to the dollar.
Compensation is a sticky issue in
womens sports. Female athletes
have been pushing for equal pay
since 1973, when Billie Jean King
formed the Womens Tennis
Association and won the fight for
equal purses at the U.S. Open.
(Venus Williams followed up on
that victory, helping to win equal
pay at Wimbledon in 2007.) But
outside of tennis, victories have
been few. On the whole, womens
sports bring in less revenue, fewer
endorsement deals, lower ticket
sales, and lower ratings, resulting in
lower pay. In the WNBA, for
example, only half the teams are
profitable, and its highest-paid
players make $109,500. Meanwhile,
the NBA reportedly brought in
north of $5 billion last year, and its
lowest-paid player made $525,000.
The U.S. womens national soccer
team argues that its situation is different: It pulled in significantly more
revenue than the mens team in 2015
and is projected to bring in another
$5 million in profit this year, while
the mens team has a projected loss
of $1 million. In the complaint, the
five playersSolo, Morgan, Megan
Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn, and
Carli Lloydclaim that the highestpaid players on the womens team
are limited to $99,000 each, but
players on the mens team average
$263,000 each. They also claim that
the women earn less than half of the
$68,000 each male player is paid
when he makes the World Cup roster, and that they are paid less for
appearances and per diems. (U.S.
Soccer has vowed to rectify the per
diem issue.) If the mens team
started winning, this would be a

66 M A R IE C L AIR E .C OM July 2016

whole different conversation, says

Abby Wambach, the worlds all-time
leading goal scorer, who retired
from the U.S. team in December.
But they havent, so how can they be
paid exponentially more dollars
than the women?
U.S. Soccer, however, contends
that the women are presenting misleading figures. Looking at a single
year of revenue generation does not
provide the entire picture, says
spokesperson Neil Buethe. If you
look at four or eight years cumulatively, the mens revenues are
almost twice that of the womens.
According to U.S. Soccer, the womens team has always been paid a
greater percentage of its revenue
than the mens team, and the players
are also paid a regular salary, while
the men are not.
The wage issue at home isnt the
only unequal treatment the women
face. When the U.S. women won the
World Cup last year, FIFA paid the
team $2 million. In 2014, when the
mens team lost to Belgium in the
round of 16, it made $9 million.
And last year, Wambach and other
top players from around the world
filed a lawsuit against FIFA and
the Canadian Soccer Association
after they discovered the Womens
World Cup would be played on turf
instead of grass, which they say is
more dangerous and requires a different style of play. We cant keep
going down this road, Wambach
says. Gone are the days when
women are going to say, Were just
grateful to be here.
The women didnt pursue that
lawsuitthey realized thered be no
decision before the World Cup and
withdrew itand its possible that,
in this case, the EEOC investigation
could determine that unequal pay
does not amount to gender discrimination. (The EEOC hasnt said
when it will hand down a decision.)
But either way, the women say, its
worth the fight. When we look
back 100 years from now, this is
going to seem absurd, Solo says.
And we can stand here and say, I
was on the right side of history.

ANTARCTICA

ROCKING THE BOAT

A N A N TA RC T IC E X PEDI T ION A IMS TO CH A NGE
T HE CL IM AT E FOR F E M A L E SCIE N T ISTS
When Joanna Young, 32, a Ph.D. student in geophysics
at the University of Alaska, goes into the field to conduct
research, shes usually surrounded by menfrom the
helicopter pilots and mountain guides to her coworkers
and discussion leaders. Its intimidating to speak up
[around them], she says. Fortunately, in Youngs next
cohort, there are no boys allowed.
Six months from now, 79 of the worlds top women
in science, including Young, will board a boat destined
for Antarctica in an effort to fix a problem as frustrating
and difficult to solve as climate change: the dearth of
women in science. The 20-day voyage, called Homeward
Bound, is the first of its kind to travel to the Antarctic.
The women will think up ways to elevate female scientists
so that as many minds as possible are dedicated to
curbing global warming.
The expedition was the brainchild of Melbourne,
Australiabased leadership consultant Fabian Dattner, who
came up with the idea last year after meeting with a group
of 23 female scientists who felt their expertise was underutilized. The women were venerable experts in their field,
and all of them, without exception, talked about how senior
male leaders are given more opportunities, despite not
having their level of experience, she says. I thought, What
would our planet be like if they were making the decisions?
Homeward Bound is Dattners way of answering that
question, and though the research vessel doesnt set sail
from the tip of South America until December, the women
will have already begun working together from their homes
in the U.S., France, Namibia, Germany, Norway, South
Africa, and elsewhere on 12 group projects. Women have a
different way of thinking about how science can influence
policies around protecting the planet, says Homeward Bound
cofounder Jess Melbourne-Thomas, a marine ecologist at
the Antarctic Climate & Ecosystems Cooperative Research
Centre in Tasmania. We need to be at the table. There may
not be many female scientists at the table yet, but at least
theyre all in the same boat. Rachel Sturtz

public transit (after Bogota, Colombia; Mexico City;
and Lima, Peru), and new research from Michigan
State University has found that 86 percent of women
in Delhi believe taking taxis puts them at risk of
assault or harassment (17 percent of women have
gone so far as to quit their jobs rather than risk the
commute). Recently, Women on Wheels also began
promoting its service for solo female travelers in the
country. Putting more women in the drivers seat is
clearly an idea that has mileage. Abigail Haworth

In Roadies, Showtimes new Cameron Crowe
directed series about a bands tour crew, Carla
Gugino plays Shelli, the level-headed production
manager who runs the show By J U N E T H O M AS
How musical is the Roadies set?
CARLA GUGINO: Therell be a new band that somebody has
found and has to share with everybody else. Cameron [Crowe]
plays songs on big speakers in between takes, too. It shifts the
energy. Its an interesting way for everybody to come together.
MARIE CLAIRE:

Did you talk to any roadies to prep for the role?

We have consultants who have all been in the music
business for a long time. Its in the details. Like the reason
roadies all wear black is so you cant be seen when all the
spotlights are up. Basically, if you do your job right, no one
will know you did anything. Thats an amazing, noble thing.
MC:
CG:

Shelli is great at keeping her cool in the face of crazy

whether its the guys on her crew or some sort of crisis. Her
job is to sort of be the designated adult, right?
CG: Im always a little bit allergic to the dynamic of the
woman whos more parental and the guy whos more like a
kid. But theres no doubt about it that if youre a production
manager and youre a woman, Ive been told by people who
work in that business, you have to be doubly smart.
MC:

MC: And she rarely sees her husband. Thats an extreme,

but a lot of couples face challenges to spending time together.
CG: Absolutely. You have late nights, and the hours are long.
It really struck me when I read the pilot script when shes
talking to her husband on the phone and she says, I love you,
while looking at Bill [the tour manager, played by Luke
Wilson]. Theres this moment of, Wait a minute. Who is the
person Im spending my time with, and who is the person Im
actually married to? Those lines are a little confusing.

MARIE CLAIRE: Does writing thrillers mess

with your psyche?
RUTH WARE: Its quite cathartic, actually. I tend to
write about things that kind of scare me, and in a way,
writing about them and putting them on the page, it
sort of demystifies them a bit because you get to work
through your own fears and your own what-ifs. Society
tends to underestimate women usually, and so part of what Im writing
about is women who are a lot stronger than people give them credit
for and a lot more determined and kind of gritty. Plus, we need as many
stories as possible about women being cool and kicking ass. S.O.

CAN
FEMINISTS
WEAR
MAKEUP?

Autumn Whitefield-Madrano, author of the

new book Face Value: The Hidden Ways
Beauty Shapes Womens Lives, explores our
complicated relationship with cosmetics

82 M A R IE C L A IR E .C OM July 2016

Natural, glam, contoured

why are we still judging
womens makeup choices?

us would rather conceal. This isnt to say these tools cant peacefully
coexist. But what it does say is that trying to place our motivations
for wearing makeup on one of two poleseither you wear it out of
insecurity, or you wear it as pure ornamentationis a game none
of us can win. We need to shy away from labeling our motivations
as good or bad, and instead consider the richer complexity of
human beautification.
While researching my book, Face Value: The Hidden Ways Beauty
Shapes Womens Lives, I spoke with hundreds of women about
the topic. When I posed the general question, Why do you think
women wear makeup? respondents tended to go black-and-white,
saying it was either about insecurity or self-expression. But when I
asked why they personally chose to wear the stuff, I heard a bouquet
of responses: Its an energy boost, a habit, a ritual, a confidence
machine, an ersatz meditation, a second skin. Its a little magic trick
that can make you look more like you.
Its clear the makeup question still has a place in feminist
conversation. But my research has brought me around to a new way
of thinking: Theres no need to wrist-smack ourselves (or others)
for wearing the stuff. But lets not fool ourselves into thinking that
loving makeup in and of itself is any sort of kiss-off to the patriarchy,
either. We can wear Goth lipstick and pastel extensionsor simple
mascara and a flushed cheekto feel more like ourselves. And we
can dab on concealer, too, if it helps free up some mental space so
we arent focusing on our imperfections. The point of embracing
makeup is to let it serve our needs and have fun with itand then
move on to the things that matter more.

TRUNK ARCHIVE

These days, no one questions whether womens rights and glamour

can coexist. (Beyoncs 2014 MTV Video Music Awards performance
in front of glowing 12-foot-high letters that spelled out FEMINIST
pretty much put that issue to rest.) But the question of feminism
and makeupthat is, whether cosmetics prevent women from being
accepted as they are, or whether they allow us to look our best as we
continue to rise in the worldpersists. And persists.
On one hand, youve got some women pointing out the ways makeup
hides our true selves. Take the #nomakeupselfie trend, or the spate of
talk shows (Today, The Talk) accepting the no-makeup challenge; both
initiatives imply that makeup is something we use to literally conceal
our insecurities. On the other hand, theres a more contrarian mindset that goes something like this: Weve spent so long denigrating
the feminineyou dont throw like a girl, do you?that for women to
dismiss something as particularly feminine, like makeup, is akin to
admitting that femininity is weak after all. This defiant strain of
thinking falls in line with the unapologetically contoured and strobed
faces of Instagram, the vloggers on YouTube who turn themselves into
masterpieces, and even the pages of this magazine, where smears of
eyeshadow look like art. Theres no apologizing here. Makeup is playful.
Its celebratory. Its fun.
As it turns out, its also emboldening. According to research
published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, women feel
more self-confident when they wear makeup. That goes for hairstyling,
too; its been shown that a womans mood improves in nearly all
metrics after a visit to the hairdresser. It even affects professionalism:
Remember the 2011 Harvard study showing that women who wear
cosmetics are rated as more competent and viewed more positively
across the board? Even heavy-makeup wearers have been found to have
more feminist attitudes than women who wear less of it or none at all.
But theres a conflict with this you-go-girl approach, and the proof
is in your makeup bag. Chances are youve got plenty of products
in there that make you feel like your baddest self and plenty of
things that hide the real youthe zits, patches, and lines most of

friend of mine
booked an appointment at a high-priced skin spa,
hoping for a little refreshment in the eye and forehead area. Instead, the expert scanned her face, then
kept on going, down to her chest, her arms, and her
legs. And then the aesthetician issued a good news/
bad news verdict: Your face looks 10 years younger
than your body. My friend had never thought much
about her body-skin situation, other than slicking on
lotion semiconsciously after her shower. It took her
about 0.1 seconds to change her tune and sign up for a
full-body rehab at Dangenes Institute of Skinovation,
in New York Citys Core Club. And as soon as I saw her

The body, apparently, is the new face, the shower
caddy is the new medicine cabinet, and the standard
facial doesnt stop at the chin. We went through
a phase where people just took care of their face and
neck, says Samantha Wright, senior aesthetician at
Dangene. The problem with that approach is that
the chest can start to look significantly older than
everything above. And in the end, you look like youve
had work on your face, says Wright. In other words:

The Dangene method considers the body as a whole

me I have quite attractive underarms, which is consoling. There is nothing she could do about the scars
because theyre over 10 years old and white, and she

hen I was younger, the traditional way women wore

fragrance was to choose one perfume and stay faithful
to it, so it became almost part of their personality. For
example, my mother [actress Ingrid Bergman] always
wore LAir du Temps by Nina Ricci. When I smell that,
of course I still think of Mama.
My scent has always been Trsorits like my second skin. And it means so
much to me because of the story behind it. When I was about 30, I started
modeling for Lancme, and a few years later, they decided to do a fragrance. It
was a very big bet at that time, because back then, the classic perfumes were
only done by couturiertraditional designers, like Dior and Chanelnot by
cosmetics companies. They asked me to serve as the spokesperson and let me
be part of the process.
Based on images and ideas from Lancme, perfumers from fragrance houses
like Firmenich and Givaudan would present different samples of what the
perfume might be, and little by little they narrowed it down to three finalists.
One of them was this beautiful rose scent that I really lovedit was so original,
so warm. I wore it every day because I wasnt sure if it would be the one. Then,
all the finalists ended up testing well with customers, so the company asked
me which I liked best. I said, Of course you know what I think! The one Ive
been wearing for the last three months!
Once it was chosen, I had lunch with the perfumer, Sophia Grojsman, and
she told me she had actually created that particular fragrance years earlier,
after seeing my mothers film Casablanca. Its not that she chose specific notes
inspired by it; it was more about the mood, the warmth, and the irreverence
of the love story. So she made the scent and saved it, thinking that one day
there would be the right client for it. When she presented it to Lancme, along
with other options, she didnt even tell them the inspiration. And I didnt
know that story the whole time I was wearing the sample. Still, we happened
to choose each otherit was the perfect marriage! To this day, it brings back
that feeling of participating in a decision, its success, and the memory of my
mother. As told to Jennifer Goldstein

the popular CW series Gossip Girl. Her new movie The Shallows,
opening June 29, is a survival movie, an isolation story, but also
a commentary on the environment. Lively plays a surfer stranded
200 yards away from shore after a great white shark attack. Because
of climate change and global warming, what was once in the deep is
now in the shallows, she explains. The danger with a film like this
is that it taps into a primal fear, but it can also unfairly villainize
this amazing creature intrinsic to our well-being. Theyre one of the
most overfished creatures in the ocean, and its important we protect
them. Reynolds had talked about the thrill of starring in a survivalisolation movie, 2010s Buried, in which his character is buried alive
in a coffin, so Livelys reaction to The Shallows role was: I gotta do
that! It would be so much fun! Plus, it would be a big change of pace
from her last film, The Age of Adaline, in which she plays a woman
born in 1908 who stops aging after a car accident at 29. (Adaline
required a lot more wardrobe changes, for one.)
Shot in Australia, The Shallows was a huge undertaking. It was 10
months after having a baby, and I had to be just in a bikini. So for
vanitys sake, that was an issue. My brother said to me a month after,
Why do you still look pregnant? She good-naturedly grimaces at his
bluntness. Theres a more graceful way to say that I say now, she
adds, laughing, as I slather my cream cheese. Then there was the
arduousness. They didnt hire a stunt double until the last two weeks
of shooting. So everything I didunderwater stunts, flipping off of a
buoyit was incredibly physically and emotionally demanding. Also, I
had no costar. I only had my imagination to work off.
She filmed two more projects post-baby. In July, shell be in Woody
Allens Caf Society, which opened the Cannes Film Festival. That
was such an incredible experience, she says, and not just because
she loved working with a cast that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen
Stewart, Steve Carell, and Parker Posey. Its also because she was so
honored to have been chosen by Allen. Everybody was so geekedout to be in a Woody Allen movie, she recalls. Nobody left the set.
Even in scenes we werent in, we would hang out and fight over
the monitorand it was like four inches by four inches! Everybody
was so present. You could be an extra and it would be cool.
For the film, which showcases Hollywood and New York during
their glamorous 1930s heyday, Allen needed to cast the part of a
sophisticated, jazz-loving divorce. I had to find an actress her age
who was very, very beautiful, very talented, and elegant, Allen says.
It was the kind of role that, years ago, you would have cast Grace
Kelly in, and that elegance is very hard to find today in girls Blakes
age. Shes a first-rate actress with an effervescent personality, a very
winning personalityyou like her on the screen.
Her third upcoming film, which she finished shooting in mid-April,
is probably the biggest undertaking of all, she says. Directed by
Marc Forster, All I See Is You is about a blind woman who regains her

eyesight and the effect that has on her relationship with her husband,
played by Australian actor Jason Clarke. Its a real examination of
dependency and codependency, and of inner vision, as well as what
you actually see, she explains. Forster, whose directorial credits
include World War Z, Quantum of Solace, and Finding Neverland,
found Lively a joy to work with. She doesnt just think in regard to
her character, but rather the story in its entirety. When youre working
with an actor who thinks like that, any kind of conversation leads to
inspiration, he says. Because of her intelligence, she added great
nuances and dimension to the character in a way that only someone
who completely lends themselves to their craft could.
Lively didnt set out to become an actressnot as a kid raised in
Burbank, California, just outside of L.A., anyway. I didnt want to
be an actor, because they were all doing it, says Lively of her parents
and four siblings, all of whom were involved in the entertainment
industry in one way or another. When youre the youngest of five

kids, you think, Who am I? If this is who they are, and theyre
shaping who I am so much, then who would I be? You strive for your
own identity. I had plenty of different passions, and I knew that
education was important.
Her father was an English professor, model, actor, and acting
coach. Her mother was a talent manager with hardscrabble roots in
Tallapoosa, Georgia, who made her own clothes from flour sacks,
worked in a factory where the windows were painted black, and had a
modeling career. (My hardest day in my whole life will never be as
hard as her easiest one, Lively says.)
Despite her ambivalence toward show business, she had a few
movie roles while attending Burbank High School, including 2005s
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. In 2007, just as she was dead
set on going to college, she was approached by the showrunner
of a TV pilot based on a young adult book series about rich kids in
Manhattan, narrated by a mysterious blogger who would verbally
sign off each episode with xoxo, Gossip Girl. It would shoot in
New York, and Lively was promised that she could take classes at
Columbia University one day a week. But Gossip Girl got too big, too
fast, leaving no time for higher education. Still, If that conversation

we started to date. A best friend just makes you happier. You can
go from being silly to opening up and being vulnerable. Youre
surrounded by comfort in sad, painful times. And thats
what matters.
She wanted to marry Reynolds when I knew he would always be
my best friend for my whole life. That was the biggest thing to me.
Id never known anything like the friendship that I had with him. I
could like him as much as I loved him. You see people fall in and out
of love with each other, but I cant imagine falling out of love with
him. The usually cool, private Lively now lets loose: I love him
exponentially more each day. Theyre so simpatico, she jokes that
shes going to announce that they have irreconcilable similarities.
Their 2012 wedding on waterfront property outside of Charleston,
South Carolina, was a well-guarded secret, though paparazzi found

gear. Id rather not have to deal with it at all, she says. But
we knew the lifestyle we were getting into, and while its hard,
sometimes, to have that level of attention on youyou have
bad days, and you have ugly days, and you have sad daysits
another thing when its our child. She didnt have the opportunity
to make a decision about what she wants.
They named their daughter James. My husbands fathers name
was James. My grandfathers name is James. It shows up a lot in
both of our lineages. And I have a boys name, and my mom has a
boys nameWilliealthough she goes by her middle name, Elain,
because she was so made fun of at school. But Willies her real
name, and I love that.
At home in Bedford, New York, Lively loves to cook. So much so, she
attended a special workshop at Paris Le Cordon Bleu culinary school
and did a stint with a pastry chef at New Yorks Per Se restaurant to
learn the ropes. Hayek says, I love Blake and I hate Blake for the same
reason. I live in Europe, so we see each other in different countries, and
shes done her research of restaurants. She orders five things to try,
and she has the discipline to enjoy it and not devour the whole plate.
Me, I move behind her like a vacuum cleaner.
Livelys interest not just in food, but in art (she and Hayek share
a painting teacher), interior design, architecture, and fashionand
the stories behind themwas largely inherited from her mother,
who reveled in creative domesticity with historical roots. We would
always go to flea markets and thrift stores and Goodwill and find
things and refurbish them, says Lively, who launched Preserve, a
company combining philanthropy, storytelling, and commerce, in
2014 and closed it last fall. She is sanguine about the reception it
received and thoughtful about what it means for other entrepreneurs.
When you try to do anything other than what people know you
for, you get criticized, she says. And when you do what people know
you for, you get criticized. You just have to stop caring about that
and say, What am I passionate about? I will succeed at things, and
I will fail at things. Its inspiring to see people wear different hats.
For young women out there, putting limitations on anyone is
dangerous and doesnt encourage women. You should feel free to
try anything and everything you feel good about. It should be as
celebrated to fail as it is to succeed, because thats life. Thats always
made me the happiest: to follow what I feel like I cant not do.
Earlier, Id asked her about her vulnerabilities, and it goes back to
the bedrock of her universe: My parents, my siblings, my daughter,
my husband, my nieces and nephewsthats where I get very mama
bear. There are two ways to look at it. You could look at it as, Thats
what Im vulnerable about. But also, Thats the thing that excites me
in the world. So I dont really think about them as my vulnerability as
much as I think about them as my reason for everything.

By the time the show ended in 2012, she had played a drug-peddling
single mom from South Boston in Ben Afflecks 2010 The Town,
after which she got a pile of offers to do the same kind of hardened
character. But she didnt want to be typecast. Instead, she starred in the

youngest of four brothers raised in a middle-class Vancouver family.

ate Hudson was married by one. Greta Gerwig has her go-to, as
does designer Mara Hofman. You could say all the cool girls have
one, and no, Im not talking about the latest must-have accessory,
but spiritual healers, often referred to as shamans. Their popularity can be charted by the navel-gazing quotes popping up in your
social-media feed; pop culture cameos like in the lm Icaros: A
Vision, which played at the Tribeca Film Festival, and in the documentaries The Reality of Truth and Chelsea Does Drugs (Michelle Rodriguez does
shaman-administered ayahuasca in the former, Chelsea Handler does it in the latter);
and the proliferation of spiritual centers including Maha Rose Center for Healing in
Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and Sacred Roots in Long Beach, Los Angeles. Once relegated
to the fringes of society, New Agey ideas like shamansand reincarnation, chakras,
and mantrasare slowly moving into the mainstream, just as yoga, meditation, and
other practices rooted in ancient, indigenous cultures have. From coast to coast,
young women are turning to shamans to help them deal with stress, depression, and
other mental and physical conditions.
There is a shift happening, a renaissance, says Guru Jagat, a kundalini
yoga and meditation star (who counts the rapper Eve as a client) with a record
label, book deal, and expanding empire of Ra Ma institutes ofering kundalini yoga,
meditation classes, and teacher trainings. Jagat posits that the technological age and

to heal ourselves through meditation and other woo-woo-sounding modalities.
Vivian Diller, Ph.D., a psychologist in private practice in New York City,
links the shaman trend to a declining interest in traditional religious practices.
Millennials are turned of by organized Western religion and are more open to
religions based on Eastern philosophy. In a world that is so uncertain, there is still

female patients (more so than her male patients) are seeking additional help with spiritual healers.
The word shaman has been traced back to the word saman in
the language of the Tungus people in Siberia, which scholars have
translated to one who is excited, moved, or raised and inner heat,
according to American Shaman: An Odyssey of Global Healing
Traditions by Jefrey A. Kottler, Jon Carlson, and Bradford Keeney. In
Redefining Shamanisms: Spiritualist Mediums and Other Traditional
Shamans as Apprenticeship Outcomes, author David Gordon Wilson
cites another translation as person with supranormal skills. Though
shamanic practices and medicine men and women have been traced
back to ancient Incan, Indian, and Egyptian civilizations, the term
today is widely used as a catchall for spiritual healers.
Most healers enter a trancelike state in which they call upon the
help of spirit guides that can appear as visions in animal or plant form
or come through as voices. Their job, say shamans, is to be a vessel
through which these spirits can heal their clientswomen like a New
Jerseybased comedian trying to break her pattern of obsessing over
unavailable men, a graphic designer in Minnesota struggling with
infertility, and a powerful politico in D.C. mending a broken heart.
Whats good enough for Kate and Greta is good enough for me, so
when a colleague told me about a shaman giving chakra cleanses, I
thought, Why not? I wasnt in a good place professionally, personally,
or physically. The waistbands of my beloved pencil skirts were growing tighter each week, and I spent last summer, the height of ponytail
season, watching my hair get thinner. I was uninspired at work as an
editor, on edge at home. Unmoored was how I described my state of
mind to friends. A therapist helped me identify what might be getting
me down: a toxic work environment, marital hiccups, anxiety related
to my children. I tried yoga and running to relieve the stress, a kid-free
beach vacation with my husband to bring us more in step. None of it
provided more than a temporary reprieve from my malaise. Maybe a
healer could x what nothing else could.
On a sunny morning last fall, I swallowed my innate skepticism
and visited Alyson Charles, a former college track-and-eld coach and
one-time radio DJ whose t physique and bubbly personality are more
Laker Girl, less spiritual healer. Charles, 37, who has been practicing
shamanism for three years, began under another shaman by taking
online courses and workshops, and working with other healers at the
Golden Drum, a spiritual center in Brooklyn. Charles conducts guided
group shamanic journeys at the Breathe salt cave in Manhattan for
$40, and one-on-one sessions in clients homes (prices vary). Mine was
comped and done at the LuliTonix juice store she manages in Nolita.
Sounds totally insane, I know.
Dressed in a fur vest and high-heeled booties, Charles sat me down
in a pillow-strewn corner of the shop, as she lit a piece of palo santo
(holy wood), which is believed by South American healers to help
purify the air of malevolent spirits, and started to play soothing tribal
music from her iPod. Then she took me on a 30-minute guided meditation, shaking handmade Native American and Peruvian wooden rattles
around my head as she encouraged me to imagine each one of my
chakras becoming vibrant and juicy. The belief in chakras, or energy
disks, comes from Hindu philosophy. There are seven chakras from the
root of the spine to the crown of the head, each corresponding to a different color and aspect of life. For example, the second chakra, located
above the pubic bone, is orange and relates to sexual health and

creativity; stagnation in either can be remedied by specic yoga moves,

certain foods, breathing techniques, and meditation. According to
Charles, we must clear our chakras from childhood wounds, traumas,
aspects from other lifetimes, things that arent even ours to carryso

hen she asked me to imagine
my chakras, I saw dark spots
representing past traumas
and pain lifting away from my
root, heart, and throat chakras,
revealing bright red, green,
and blue energy centers. I liken
these dark spots to smudges
on a gemstone that have to be
wiped away to reveal the glow
beneath. Near the end of our
session, she told me to envision my goddess self. What does she look
like? What is she doing? How does she feel? Suddenly, a very clear picture of myself appeared in my mind. I had masses of long, wavy brown
hair, and my legs and arms looked long, tan, and toned. I was wearing
a white bohemian dress and walking down a sun-dappled cobblestone
street. Charles ended the session with a hug. You were just so present
and ready, she said, giving me some of the wood, a feather, and an
amethyst, which she said the spirits had told her to give me.
My doubts had faded, and I left feeling light and jubilant, thinking of little else other than that vision of my goddess self in the days
that followed. The idea that I had permission to become this happy,
glorious woman I was meant to be had taken seed. Within a few days, I
stopped nding clumps of hair in the shower drain; people started telling me that I had amazing energy; and my husband (who had been
somewhat dubious but mostly disinterested when I tried to talk to him
about my cleansing) and I received a small but unexpected check from
a family member. Of course, this could all be easily explained away:
Id been taking supplements for my hair and avoided at-ironing it;
people simply picked up on my positive mood; the money was a gift.
Still, Id felt so rudderless for so long, having a reason to feel hopeful
was enough for me to set aside my more rational, cynical self.
A week later, a colleague handed me the card of a seeress. I feel
like this is something youd be into, my friend said, not ironically. I
e-mailed Deborah Hanekamp, 33, who studied herbal medicine and
Reiki in New York and Thailand, and spent eight years as a shamans
apprentice in the Amazon. Now she leads seminars and ofers personal

but came to my apartment in Manhattan.
She laid out her tools: a dozen or so crystals, a drum set, and a vial
of waters from Lake Titicaca in Peru, the Ganges River in India, and
the Upper Sacramento River Watershed in Mount Shasta, California,
considered sacred by the Incas, Hindus, and Winnemem Wintu Native
American tribe, respectively. Hanekamp describes auras as multicolored vibrating lights that can range in size from six inches to 30

As a brown-skinned girl born to a teenage mother, I had a low bar of success. No one in my family had
finished high school, and because we were poor, I did not expect much more than what I had, which was
very little. It was assumed that I would become a domestic worker or maid in one of the mega-hotels in
Las Vegas like my grandmother, a school-bus driver like my mother, a hairdresser, or a certified nursing
assistant. And while these were all considered good jobs in my neighborhood and by my family, it is safe
to say that none of them would lead to a solid middle-class existence with a comfortable retirement
package and enough to pay for college tuition for my children.
Growing up, I never believed we were poor. We had systems and networks that worked. If the electricity
got turned off for nonpayment, we went to a neighbors house or burned candles until it was turned back on.
If we ran out of milk or money, we borrowed a couple of bucks from a relative or friend. We lived with
little regard for what others had that we did not. There were no rich people in our lives to show us the deep
divide or to make us wish for more. As a result, I did not resent my lack or understand the depths of my
deprivation because I had nothing to measure it against. I lived in a cocoon of familiarity and geographic

boundaries that I knew never to cross. There
was also no road map to a life or destination
other than where I lived at any given time.
After I was born, we moved into a
tiny one-bedroom duplex in Compton,
California, that cost $100 per month. At
night, the apartment complex would come
alive with music and the sound of dice
hitting the concrete walkway. Young boys
crouched in tight circles, clutching dollar
bills, yelling at the dice to come up right. A
halo of marijuana smoke hung above their
ring of Afros. Cans of Schlitz malt liquor
and bottles of Thunderbird were lined up
neatly just outside the circle, waiting for a
fumbling hand to reach back for a swig.
After a long days work, my father would
join the group to blow off some steam
before dinner.
My mother did her best to shield my
younger brother and me from the things
that would make us question her, our
circumstances, or our lives. She never
talked about politics, race, or what was
going on outside our neighborhood. She
convinced us that our world was right
and that the things we did not understand
were of no consequence.
Our cupboards were bare. The most I
could find was a stale box of taco shells on
the back shelf and a lone bottle of ketchup
in the refrigerator. At the start of the month,
the refrigerator and shelves overflowed with
milk, cereal, chicken, grits, Oreo cookies,
and fresh fruit. However, by the end of the
month, we ate rice and butter at nearly
every meal and drank sugar water. My
mother had long since quit her job at a convalescent home changing bedpans, washing
laundry, mopping floors, and serving food
because the next-door neighbor could no
longer take care of my brother. After she
and my father split, her main source of
income was The County, as she called public assistance. We survived on the oncemonthly checks that arrived in the mail and
on food stamps. I learned that accepting the
checks meant that we were open to scrutiny
by the state and social workers. On occasion, they would conduct a welfare check to
make sure my mother was telling the truth
about her circumstances. They were suspicious and scribbled notes on their writing
pads as they walked through surveying our
house and belongings. Did the television
belong to us? Was that our car in the

driveway? What was in the refrigerator? I

believed they were trained to see us as criminals, not worthy of help or support.
Somewhere between the local community
center and my elementary school, I figured
out that I was bright and that school could
be one of the few things in my life that
I could control. It was a place away from
the chaos, both physically and mentally,
where I could create myself anew. When I
parachuted into a new school, I would do
my best not only to catch up to the lesson,
but to exceed it with bonus assignments.
My teachers, seeing my eagerness, created
independent-learning circles away from
the others so that I could continue to excel

mother
met her
boyfriend,
our lives
changed
dramatically, seemingly overnight. I now
resided in the local drug house. There were
men moving freely throughout our house,
refilling their stock to sell on the streets.
There was also a safe filled with thousands
of dollars of cash, marijuana, and cocaine
stashed in my mothers bedroom. My
brother and I stayed out of our mothers
line of sight, and that is how she preferred
it. We were raising ourselves, emotionally
and intellectually, figuring out our places
in the world on our own.
All of the schools that I attended from
elementary through high school were
average at best and failing at worst.
However, growing up, I naively believed
I was receiving the same quality education
as other students across the country and
that I had an equal shot at success. I did
not know that elsewhere, students attended
prep and private schools meant to funnel
them to the most elite colleges and
institutions. When I realized the truth, I
was angry and felt like I had been cheated.
The idea that I was excelling was suddenly
placed within the context of the conditions
in which I, and those surrounding me,
had grown up. In the real world, I was
behind, and the gap between my middleclass and upper-middle-class peers and

mebetween what they knew and what I

knewseemed insurmountable.
To be sure, at the time, there was nothing
around me or that I could see to signal
directly that the road ahead would be hard
and filled with land mines meant to derail
my friends or me. I did not know there
were real kids, not just those on TV, who
had more and were being prepped for
success. In all fairness, they did not know
about me, either.
By 11th grade, I had joined every club
I could at San Bernardino High, my
latest school. I was a varsity cheerleader,
copresident of the Black Student Union, a
member of the Future Black Leaders of
America, and a member of our Mock Trial
team, an organization for aspiring lawyers.
I was enrolled in the Phoenix Honors
program and took Spanish and French. I
also had a trigonometry class that began
one full hour before school started.
Then, I did not make the connection
between the way I dressed and the
neighborhood I came from and the
assumptions my teachers and others made
about my intelligence and capabilities.
I looked like everyone else in my
neighborhood. I did not see anything
wrong with my hairstyle, Air Jordan
sneakers, or baggy polo shirt. However,
the way I dressed was all my teachers
and fellow students needed to see before
turning me away or, in subtle but sure
ways, letting me know I did not belong.
I began wearing more formfitting clothes
and dresses. I stopped wearing large,
dangling earrings. I took my cues from the
white girls in my class who shopped at
the Gap, Wet Seal, and Charlotte Russe. It
was all I could do to make sense of all of
the things in my life I did not understand.
Blythe Anderson was my guidance
counselor. I checked in with her often to
make sure I was on track for graduation.
She thought I should explore the
University of California, Berkeley, or
another of the University of California
schools because of in-state tuition, which
was cheaper than going out of state.
Before these conversations, I had never
given much thought to what college I
might attend, what I might study, or how
I would pay for it. I also had no idea about
entrance exams, the application process,
or how to choose one school over another.
Save for geographic location, I assumed

all of the colleges were the same. I did

not know the difference between an Ivy
League institution and a state college. In

I got a job scooping, cooking, and serving
food to the thousands of tourists at the
Riviera Hotel and Casino. I worked 40 hours
per week and sometimes picked up a shift
when someone called in sick. In every way, I
was responsible for myself. And I took my
job as seriously as I did school. Work
provided me with the money I needed to
take care of myself and to send money back
home to my family. School is what I hung
my future on. It was going to be my ticket
out. My situation felt precarious, as if it
could unravel at any moment if I were not
careful. On school days, instead of doing
homework or hanging out with my friends
when I arrived home, I had just enough
time to put on my uniform and catch the
bus to the casino for work.
I was learning how to navigate my two
worlds seamlessly. I could be tough when
I needed to bescrappy and resourceful. I
hung out with my cousins at home and
with the other black kids in the cafeteria
during lunch. I shoplifted clothes from the
local department store and roamed the
Circus Circus Hotel and Casino on the
weekends in search of girls to fight.
Simultaneously, and beyond the watchful
eyes of my friends and family, I was
meticulously learning the rules of how to
succeed outside my neighborhood by
observing the white kids in my classes.

WITH HER GRANDMOTHER, 2014

They had a different way of

being in the world, entitled
and less fearful. I, too, wanted
to feel like I owned the world.
College was the topic of
discussion in all of my classes.
Everyone was applying, retaking the
SAT, and talking about where they hoped
to go. They spoke with such authority and
certainty. With the exception of my vague
conversation with Ms. Anderson about
UC Berkeley, I had nothing to contribute.
I tried attending a local college fair,
taking off work and catching several
buses to get there. When I arrived, I was
overwhelmed. I did not know how to sort
through all of the information on the
tables or what criteria I should be using
to decide which schools would be a good
fit for me. The school representatives, while
eager to help, grew annoyed with my lack
of understanding of the process and my
seemingly rudimentary questions. I did not
know what a major was. I was unfamiliar
with the financial aid and application
deadlines. I needed more guidance, some
help. I reached out to Ms. Bowman, who
ran Future Black Leaders of America at my
old high school, and she told me to apply
to Howard.
I spent weeks working on my
application. I included a table of contents,
my transcripts, the typed blue-and-white

long-form application, a few of my favorite

poems and a short story that I had written,
a personal statement, and whatever else I
thought would help my case, then shipped
the small binder off to Washington, D.C.
A couple of months after sending in my
application, my grandmother waved a white
envelope in the air. You got in, baby, you
got in! I couldnt help it. I had to open it.
I unfolded the letter and began to read, my
eyes dissecting each line for confirmation of
what had just been said. I examined the
dark-blue imprint: Howard University. I had
been accepted.

LOVE & SEX

SEX DIARIES OF
AN EX-VIRGIN

fter I had sex for the first time

at age 36, I quickly realized
that finding willing partners
wouldnt be an issue, so much
as the wide chasm in confidence, knowledge, and skill
that divided me from them.
On a secluded hike with the
boyfriend I lost my virginity to,
I suggested sex in a meadow.
He gave me a been there, done that eye roll. When I suggested a rendezvous at a deserted roadside vista during a
long car ride with the next man I dated, he said, This is a

stick shift, alluding to the insurmountable logistics. I

capitulatedwe are both very tall.
I figured these were inevitable consequences of my late
start. Most men around my age were already finished with
the figuring it out and messing it up that feltto melike
half the fun. So I braced myself for what else felt inevitable:
bad sex, awkward sex, and comic mishaps, like when I
accidentally kicked a man hard in the face as he attempted
a deft roll into a 69. With another man, I suddenly lost
interest in the midst of receiving cunnilingus. I lay there,
wondering, Do I keep pretending, or just grab my pants and
go? One afternoon while making out behind a Dumpster
with the captain of a dolphin-watching boat, I learned the

hard way that a few unfortunate seconds is all that divides

heavy petting from a hand job. Afterward, I stood stunned,
blinking against the harsh sunlight, palm suspended in
midair, wondering how that just happened.
Still, there were certain benefits to having ones adolescent experiences as a grown-up. I didnt have to wait for
anyones mom to pick me up. I didnt have to see those guys
in homeroom the next day. Didnt have to wonder if theyd
call, or what it might say about me if they did, or didnt. I
may have been sexually innocent, but I was still an adult.
I had nixed my chance to be the ingenue. My prolonged
innocence meant Id never be the siren, chanteuse, or
temptress. Nor would I be the witch, whore, mother, or
MILF. Instead, I had found my niche between bombshell
and librarian, and planned to stay there indefinitely.
Then, six years after losing my virginity, I decided to sail
around the world aboard a square-rigged tall ship. I had
paid to work as a member of the crew, to learn to sail, and
to cross oceans the way people did in the age of saila
phrase I found devastatingly romantic. Many of the crew
were young Scandinavian sailors, with whom I lived in very
tight quarters. It wasnt long before the most improbable
pairings became probable. Predictable. Inevitable.
The first time I went to bed with one of the sailors, a
blue-eyed man 12 years my
junior, I figured he wanted me
in spite of my age. I wasnt
noticeably older; my complexion reflected three and a half
decades of clean living. So I
was absolutely unprepared for
what happened after our tryst
at a hotel where we stayed one
night while docked at a port of
call. You know whats the sexiest thing about you? he
asked, as we lay spent and tangled in a mess of once-crisp
sheets. I was in too languid a state to even open my eyes, but
I imagined my skin damp and tanned, my sun-bleached hair
splayed across the pillow. Your chest wrinkles, he said.
Chest wrinkles?! How, amid all the ads regarding wrinkles, veins, dark spots, fine lines, lasers, and Botox, had I not
been primed to fear and track their onset?
The sailor didnt apologize. My body bore witness to my
lifes experience, he said. Its wonderful, he murmured,
tracing them first with his fingers, then his mouth. Had I
become The Older Woman, despite my lack of experience?
Id promised myself years prior, when I was still a virgin,
to never talk a man out of adoring my body. I wouldnt walk
backward out of a room, hiding my imperfect backside from
someone who, 20 minutes earlier, had been ready to construct a shrine in its honor. So I lay still and forced myself to
receive his compliment.
My delayed sexual awakening had, in effect, caused me
to fast-forward from virgin to older woman in a handful of
years, when for most women that progression takes 20, or
30. Id never considered it would happen, much less that it
might lead to other possibilities. Weeks later, over a game of

backgammon belowdecks, I confessed to the blue-eyed sailor

the attraction I felt for another of our shipmates who was 20
years youngerbarely an adult. I dont have many regrets
about waiting for sex, I said. But a part of me wishes I
hadnt missed out on that. I explained how strange it felt:
to be nostalgic for an experience Id never had. Would never
have. Id never have my hands and mouth on a body just
bloomed, humming and taut, empirically, undeniably
beautiful. I wanted that energy inside methe kind that
defines, and is wasted on, youth.
So ask, said the blue-eyed sailor, rolling the dice.
Just ask, I repeated to myself. He might have said, Just
jump overboard. But then again, what did I have to lose?
Minutes later, as if summoned, the very young, very
beautiful sailor approached our game on his way to the hold.
I stood, leaned close, and as casually as Id have asked to
borrow his flashlight, I told the very young, very beautiful
man what I wanted. His eyes grew comically wide before he
smiled and said, When?
Our couplinglate one night, in the heat of the engine
roomfelt urgent and reckless, heightened by the ships
rolling, the clanking of wrenches beside our heads, the
stagnant, diesel-smelling air, and the very real possibility of
being caught. It was, in a word, perfect. Ill savor those

gorgeous 30 minutes forever. That night wasnt about some
clutch at my fading youth; it was about every wondrous,
surprising Yes Id denied myself for fear of others judgment. It was about rethinking which of lifes possibilities I
could be allowed.
That same impulse followed me to an island near Africa,
where I celebrated Thanksgiving by skinny-dipping with my
blue-eyed Scandinavian sailor, a 20-something yoga instructor, and a barely-graduated aspiring surfer. We all raced into
the surf and played like we were kids: splash fighting,
running in slow motion, floating as if sacrificing our bodies
to the sky. We watched reverently as the suna blazing,
brilliant redsunk into the horizon.
I was last out of the water, dreading the long walk back to
where Id shed my sarong. Alone, I felt naked. Too exposed.
Vulnerable. But I made myself walk tall, letting my body
look however it looked, move however it moves, carrying me
from the sea and over a long slope of shifting sand.
With my sarong wrapped around me, I turned toward
the last rays of sun, squeezing salt water from my hair. The
sailor stood close. Leaned his shoulder into me, grinning.
What? I asked.
You know, he said. You know.

Mars has been retrograde in your sign for

months, and it will change direction in late June,
allowing you to access your emotions, initiating
direct encounters with fear, desire, passion,
and memories you havent recalled in ages.
You know what youre made of and what you
want. Live from a place of affirmation. Selfacceptance is a process you cannot rush.
Throughout your life, you will meet others
who welcome you without hesitation.

true talent as an artist, a lover, and, most of
all, someone who trusts yourself in those roles.
Pisces is the sign designed for pleasure, though
its easy to get distracted because you place
such a high value on serving others. Its clear that
you need an extended opportunity to revel in
the beauty around you and to which you are so
sensitive. Take time to treat yourself. The result
will flower into a new phase of your life.

There is energy behind your thoughts, and you
will come up with solutions to problems that
could turn out to be beneficial. It doesnt

that you are innovative in a very practical way.
Put that gift to use.
POWER DAY: July 22

You will lay many anxieties to rest as you realize

that your concerns were all in your imagination.
Once you let go of this kind of resistance, youll
be surprised at how much more energy you
have. Eventually, youll reach the point where
your bounty of love and ingenuity leaves no
room for worry or self-doubt. This is a rare form
of confidence, deeply rooted in your soul. The
more you focus on what you enjoy about life,
the more aware youll be of your true strength.

that area, allowing things to become and evolve
in their own organic way. This is a fermentation

In every significant accomplishment, there is a
measure of chance, the unpredictable, and the

compassionate witness to what someone else
is going through. The goal here is being helpful
without getting so involved that you lose your
independence. You know how to find a balance

KATE
MCKINNON
The comedian who kills it as Hillary Clinton
on Saturday Night Live battles the paranormal
in this months Ghostbusters reboot
1. IF I WERENT A COMEDIAN/ACTRESS: I would live in the woods and be a carpenter. I already have my outfits picked out.
2. BEST CAREER ADVICE IVE GOTTEN: This lyric from Hamilton: You get love for it,
you get hate for it, you get nothing if you wait for it. I think that says it all.

3. MOMENT I FELT ID MADE IT: Still waiting, gals.

4. MOST AGONIZING CAREER DECISION IVE EVER MADE: Oddly enough, auditioning for Saturday Night Live. I had to
get out of a contract I was in at the time and it was definitely a gamble, and I dont gamble. I lost $6 in Atlantic City once and said, Never again.

5. FAVORITE PERK OF THE JOB: On the two occasions that Ive had the honor of meeting
contestants from RuPauls Drag Race they knew who I was!

6. WORST PITFALL OF THE JOB: I dont sleep enough, and it does what is the opposite of wonders horrors.
It does horrors for my skin.

7. CHANGE ID LIKE TO SEE IN MY INDUSTRY: Id love everyone to switch to wearing

flats all the time. If we all decided together, we could do it! Sneakers count as flats in this scenario.

8. HOW I MADE MY FIRST DOLLAR: I was an umpire at Little League softball games. I only lasted a
few games because I wasnt 100 percent clear on all the rules.

9. WHO DO YOU ADMIRE AND WHY? I admire my boss, Lorne Michaels. He never stops producing. I think, for him,
comedy is a tool of compassion, a way of rallying people together and saying, Guys, isnt the world bonkers?
Arent we all just trying our best? Theres a tenderness in everything he does.

10. LAST THING I BINGE-WATCHED: The Great British Bake Off [on BBC One]. Its the least competitive competition
show there is. Theyre all so sweet and polite, and they help one another and nothing goes wrong. It lulls you off into nice
dreams about pudding and biscuits, which mean different things in England than they do here. Watch the show for further information.

11. SONG THAT ALWAYS MAKES ME CRY: Stop This Train by John Mayer. Every damn time.
12. SONG ID WANT PLAYED AT MY FUNERAL: Ech, I dont really like partiesI dont need a whole thing.
Maybe a dinner party. Play something fun. Type in Beyonc on Pandora. Have a good timelife is precious.

13. ON MY BUCKET LIST: I always wanted to live alone for a month in a lakeside cabin. In my fantasy, I enter
a state of perfect peace and grow my own kale and stuff, but in real life, I think I might be very bored after four days.

15. ONE THING IM EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD AT: This bitch can cook.
16. ONE THING IM EPICALLY BAD AT: Choreographed movement.
17. SUPERHERO POWER ID WANT TO HAVE: The power to stop time. I would use it to sleep and
watch TV and MAAAAAAYBE exercise. Oh, who am I kidding? Id just watch TV.

18. IF I COULD COMPETE IN AN OLYMPIC SPORT, ID LIKE IT TO BE: Running. Cause then
ostensibly Id be good at running.

RAMONA ROSALES/AUGUST

14. IF I COULD LIVE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY, IT WOULD BE: Id pull a Diane Lane in Under the
Tuscan Sun and live in a little Italian village. I wonder if anyone ever named a country other than Italy in response to this question.

LIFE IS A SPORT. WE ARE THE UTILITY.

BE UNSTOPPABLE.
