Activity: Science exhibition for standard 5 pupils.

Introduction
Many students find science extremely inspiring and interesting. Science instills a sense of
intrigue and enables students to develop understanding and form questions based both on the
knowledge they already have and the insight they wish to gain in the future. Students who excel
in science lessons are likely to develop a strong ability to think critically. For this reason I
decided to do a science exhibition covering the standard 5 science syllabus with the help of
students, their parents and other members of the community (sponsors).
Steps
The headmistress was informed about the project and her help was solicited in finding sponsors
and getting all required permission from authorities.
A class PTA was done to inform and explain parents about the project. They were asked to give
their full support to the children in terms of providing necessary materials, helping children in
making appropriate aids, getting required information from the internetetc
Class was divided in groups and each group was given a particular topic to work on (the syllabus
comprises of 9 different topics)
Each group was briefed about what was expected from them. For example what were the
information which they should include in their charts, what were the materials they were
supposed to bring or make, what drawings to includeetc
Regular monitoring was done to see if children were doing things as they were supposed to and
to see if the work was progressing.
With the help of the HM, other parents, companies (libraries, supermarkets, shops, schools,
colleges from the vicinity) and authorities were contacted to get additional help. E.g printed
streamer (banderole), stationary material, potted plants, model of solar systemetc
When everything was ready, help of colleagues and some parents were solicited to get everything
properly exhibited.

All the classes of the school were allotted a specific time to visit the exhibition. Parents were of
course invited as well as all those who provided their support in one way or another.
Conclusion
The most effective teachers and schools are those with strong family and community
involvement programs (Henderson & Mapp, 2002). Working towards genuine partnerships with
the students families and the community may be one of the most rewarding experiences. Its a
win-win situation from all angles. Pupils came out more learned from the experience and the
school community relationship more strong. At the end of the day what was more important is
that all objective set were met and everyone had done his/her share of work for which he/she
could be proud of.
