Chapter 8.4 Variation and Problem Solving

Objective: Solve problems involving direct and indirect variation.
Direct Variation: y varies directly as x, or y is directly proportional to x, if there is a
nonzero constant k such that y=kx
k is the constant of variation or the constant of proportionality
Inverse Variation: y varies inversely as x, or y is inversely proportional to x, if there is
k
a nonzero constant k such that y
x
k is the constant of variation or the constant of proportionality

If y varies directly as x, find the constant of variation and the direct variation equation
for the following:
1

Y=4 when x=20

Y=7 when x=1/2

3
The distance a car travels at a fixed rate varies directly as the time. If a car travels
325 miles in 5 hours, how long would it take to travel 780 miles?

If y varies inversely as x, find the constant of variation and inverse variation equation
for each situation:
4

Y=6 when x=5

y =1/8 when x=16

6
The volume of a gas at a constant temperature varies inversely as the pressure.
Find the volume of a gas under a pressure of 25 pounds if the gas occupies 15 cubic
centimeters under a pressure of 20 pounds.
