and Mr J Maseko

Orientation

The purpose of this module is to firstly provide you, the educator, with a
variety of experiences using educational ICTs in the creation of learning
materials and environments.

Just as in the first year modules, basic practical skills regarding the use of
the computer and Internet in Education will be NOT be taught as such,
but through the authentic tasks provided for you as student, you will be
expected to master a number of these skills.

Consultation
Module presenters will be available online through Edulink, which you may
access through the student portal at http://student.uj.ac.za/. Edulink is an
online (Internet-based) environment where most of the teaching and
(hopefully) the learning will take place. Module email and discussions in
Edulink will be used as a communication medium. Alternatively,
consultations can be organised by appointment.

Tutors
Tutors will be appointed to assist you with any module related problems.
These tutors will assist you with your work but will not do the work for you or

4
re-teach lessons you have missed. For this reason you must please ensure
that you attend contact sessions and take part in all class activities.

Tutors will also be available online through Edulink so please make use of
this system to make appointments with them or discuss your problems
online.

Grievance procedure

Students who feel unhappy about any component of the module are
welcome to bring this to the attention of the relevant people. The following
procedure is, however, essential:

If you are not satisfied with any aspect of the module, for example a test or
assignment mark, discuss it with the tutor or the lecturer. If the issue cannot
be resolved at that level, please consult with the Head of Department:
Mathematics, Science, Technology and Computer Education (Prof D Van
der Westhuizen). Present the grievance in writing and remember to include
details such as dates, times, student numbers and names. If you are still not
happy with the outcome, you may then take the issue up with the Dean of
the Faculty of Education, Prof S Gravett.

In the case of a problem other than marks, you should directly take it up with
the lecturer concerned and, if necessary, take it further as indicated above.
In all cases, the chain of management must be followed. Please keep all
relevant documentation to provide support for your claim.

Attendance Requirements
The attendance of lectures and practical sessions is compulsory. Please
make arrangements with the lecturers if you are unable to attend. Most
module activities will be facilitated online and your presence and
participation within this medium is just as important as your class
attendance. Poor class attendance may prevent you from successfully
completing this module.

Venues and Times

The module orientation will take place at the first contact session as
indicated on the official timetable. You will be expected to attend the
orientation. You may be notified by sms about the first contact session and
you will also get these details at registration. The rest of the module will take
place as per official timetable. Times, dates and venues will be provided in
Edulink, the electronic portal that you will access through the student portal
at http://student.uj.ac.za/ Please note that this is a year module and the
final assessment takes place in June 2010.

5
Please note that any changes to the official times and dates will be posted in
Edulink. It remains your responsibility to check on a regular basis (at least
once a week) for new arrangements, messages and calendar postings in
Edulink.

Textbook

No textbook has to be purchased. Reading material for this module will be

disseminated in Edulink or at the contact sessions.

Internet Access
As most of the module activities and interaction is facilitated online, you will
most definitely need access to a computer and a stable Internet connection.

Assessment
Continuing assessment is done in this module. You will be required to
submit a number of milestone assignments that will eventually make up the
year mark. A final portfolio of work will take the place of the examination in
June 2010. Requirements and guidelines for the final portfolio will be
posted in Edulink.

Note: All assignments for this module will be posted in Edulink or

electronically on CD-ROM. The submission of assignments will be
explained at the first contact session. Although you may be required to
complete tasks on a weekly basis, there are at least three key assignments.
NB! Specific instructions and guidelines for submitting each assignment will
be given closer to the due dates through Edulink.

All assignments must be generated on a computer in a suitable format and

must demonstrate your proficiency with various software packages. The
technical correctness of the assignments as well as the content will count a
significant portion of the mark allocation for the particular assignment. In
each case, a checklist or rubric will be provided to illustrate how the
assignment will be assessed.

The final portfolio will be submitted on a CD ROM

You must complete all assignments successfully to make up your year

mark. The year mark makes up 70% of the final mark. The final mark is
calculated as follows: Year Mark (70%) + Final Portfolio (30%) = Final Mark
(100%).

No assignments can be accepted after the due dates without prior

arrangements made with the lecturer. Late assignments will be

6
assessed at the discretion of the lecturer, but will only be eligible for a
maximum of 50%

You are expected to save all of your work as a backup in case of work
being lost.

Themes

The following themes will be covered in this module. You will be introduced
to the theory that underpins each theme. You will have the opportunity to
combine both theoretical and practical knowledge of each theme in the work
that you submit.

Theme 1: Web 2.0: New technologies for learning

• Web 2.0 overview
• Communication
• Information Sharing
• Collaboration
• Social Networks
Theme 2: Software for the development of multimedia learning materials
and environments
• Video
• Text
• Sound
• Graphics
• Web Design Tools

Note: Times and dates for the completion of these themes will be flexible.
Please check the relevant dates and any subsequent changes to the
programme in Edulink.
