As promoters of the local Mobile ecosystem, we
believe in the power of learning through sharing
best practices and connecting people that
activate in the local Mobile industry.
We've created Mobile Tech Report 2016 as a
snapshot of what is currently happening in terms
of mobile development in Bucharest.
The main insights of the report include types
of projects undertaken by local companies,
emerging technologies, business opportunities
in Mobile, ideas for community involvement, the
most used tools in a Mobile team.
As the purpose of the study is to present insights

about the local Mobile industry, we focused
on qualitative inquiries. Each company initially
completed a survey and then an exploratory
meeting followed, in order to clarify all the aspects.
In this report, you will find three sections:

companies that have an office in Bucharest and
are currently involved in mobile development. The
38 companies that have contributed range from
outsourcing to product companies, from startups to long established businesses, developing
Mobile products for a large set of industries.

The Mobile industry is entering the maturity stage.
Adoption of mobile devices has peaked in most of
the developed markets [1] , the weekly smartphone
usage has doubled over the past 4 years [2] , the
euphoric gold rush of simple apps has ended [3]
and new emerging technologies connected with
Mobile entered the hype cycle [4] .
Smartphone adoption in enterprises is forecasted
to grow 25% YoY by 2022 [5] . Enterprise mobile
solutions include software, mobile devices, and
applications that work together to help companies
and employees to enhance work and increase
their efficiency. This trend has seen small signs
of adoption in the local mobile development
landscape.

Most prevalent industries for which Mobile

projects are developed are Retail, mCommerce
and Finance. These industries are directly related
to money and, given the fact that consumer
behavior and expectations have changed, our
industry adapts as well.
Many of the business opportunities for Mobile
identified in the study also circle these industries.
As Mobile drives a new stage of digitalization of
commerce, we forecast a boom in mCommerce
opportunities and is expected to grow 31% globally
[6]
. Along big eCommerce players that shift to
mCommerce, there are lots of smaller shops that
explore this new consumer medium.
Shopping via apps is generally preferred to

shopping via mobile browser. From an user
experience perspective, there is still lots of
improvement to be made in terms of the Mobile
customer journey, especially around the purchase
completion and payment.
Next industries that were mentioned in the study
are Entertainment, Education and Healtchare.
These map the fundamental consumer needs,
with enough experiences left to be digitized.
It's particularly interesting how combining Mobile
with emerging technologies enable new, richer
experiences for consumers, like AR/VR are for
Entertainment, or IoT is for Healthcare.
Other industries tackled by Mobile projects are
Travel and Transportation. As people become
more and more open to travelling and as tickets
and accommodation become cheaper, there is a
plethora of utility apps accompanying the travel
experience.

The mobile development industry in Bucharest

is young, most of the participating companies
have between 3 and 5 years of Mobile experience.
Outsourcing companies with international clients
are the most prevalent. The majority of these
companies are not focused only on Mobile, yet
they have identified strong customer demand.
We have also seen signs of the rise of hybrid
(outsourcing/product) companies. Having a good
cash flow from the services they offer, part of

the outsourcing companies are exploring with
products of their own, to offer to global markets.
They have started building in-house capabilities
of Product Management, User Experience and
Marketing to increase the chances of new product
initiatives.
Mixing emerging technologies with Mobile,

to enable new experiences and utility for
customers
Most of the companies are developing native apps,

taking full advantage of the extra capabilities that
these have to offer.
There is an unprecedented setup for this, both

from a consumer behavior perspective and from
a technological standpoint.
Some of these companies show full flexibility in

terms of creating mobile projects by having the
capability to cover lots of platforms, depending on
the project need. We haven't seen any significant
preference for either iOS or Android as main
development platforms.

The most popular emerging technologies in the

study are Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality,
Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things.
Many of the participating companies have shared
that they plan to have projects using these
technologies. In the "Discover more" section you
will find useful information on the subject, as we
have dedicated special attention to exemplify
some new use cases of these techs.
In terms of business opportunities, we have
identified two main areas:
Prospects in the growing industries mentioned
above, with mCommerce clearly leading the
pack
Additionally, there is a big opportunity of building

products that are more contextual and just-intime for the users.

native apps as well.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES
From the large range of emerging technologies nowadays, the local mobile
development companies anticipate working the most with Augmented Reality
and Virtual Reality. This is consistent with what we've seen as demand coming
from big consumer brands. New tech enables richer experiences for the endcustomers and the possibility to create a memorable connection with the brand.
The proliferation of smart devices is being met with projects that combine
Mobile with Internet of Things. Consumers want to be able to use different smart
devices through apps on the go.
Artificial Intelligence powers projects from different industries, ranging from
Travel to m-Commerce and Security.
When it comes to new programming languages, Swift, Kotlin and React Native
were mentioned the most.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
The biggest business opportunity identified by participants to the study is

developing apps for the fast growing industry of m-Commerce.
The second biggest industry with potential is Healthcare, where the business
opportunity lies in building products using Internet of Things and Mobile.
Building apps that offer utility based on the context & localization of the user
is seen as another opportunity, both from a brand engagement and from a
standalone product perspective.
Emerging markets and traditional industries ripe for digital disruption also invite
tech companies seeking a high-growth business.

A must-play for Star Wars fans, Star Wars: Commander is a real-time strategy game that
we developed across multiple platforms.
The app allows players to build their own base and invade enemy territory in order to gain
supremacy in the Galactic Civil War.
Players can enjoy the full range of vehicles, weapons and technology from the Star Wars
universe.
Although each player starts fighting independently, then they can decide whether to join
the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire.

Well, its Star Wars. We grew up with it and we
loved it, so we were honored to work on the
project.
Other than that, what was especially complex
about the development was that we had a dayand-date launch, which meant that it had to be
ready for all platforms at the same time.

The loyalty app lets consumers scan all the receipts from any of the hundreds stores in
Bneasa Shopping City and gives them back exclusive benefits according to their spend.

favourite stores.

Cif had kicked off the campaign Cif Curata Romania, which aimed to clean up the
streets of Romania from the aggressive messages and signs that can negatively influence
the proper development of children. The campaign, created by McCann Erickson and MRM,
was held nationwide between 20 February to 30 May and aimed to remove vulgar posts,
potentially offensive or discriminatory in the street. We have been proud developers of the
mobile component of this campaign.

An app with a social attitude intended at
cleaning up all the aggressive messages from
the streets, inviting thus the population to get
involved and make a change. When a user saw
an aggressive or discriminatory message, he
would enter the app, instantly get localized and
a CIF team was sent to clean up the mess. The
social implication of both users and CIF team
had immediately and visible results, making the
city a better place to live.

With over 150k downloads, the app was one of the most popular in the Region, hitting
40k simultaneous active users during its peak. While its main role was to give X Factors
viewers the option to vote for their favorite contestants, it also made use of some cutting
edge mobile technologies and methodologies like deep linking, in-app messaging, contextaware onboarding, user profiling, smart push notifications and minimizable video player

By constantly keeping in touch with the client
and through clear communication channels, we
achieved seamless integration of the app within
the experience of the TV show. The app would
be promoted during key moments on TV and
users would be able to easily download it and
express their opinion by voting for their favorite
contestants thus influencing the outcome of the
show.
This seamless transition also translated through
social media sites to increase awareness,
activation and customization for new users
through the process of deep linking.

DEVELOPMENT OF SOUND RECOGNITION APPS
The first product is called OtoSense, based on a technology called SIR, for Sound
Intelligent Recognition. OtoSense is an application running on various mobile and Windows
platforms. It records and analyses background sounds and sends notifications to its user
if any noticeable sound is recognized (fire alarm, doorbell, etc.). It also allows the user to
record specific sounds he wants to be noticed about. The products specific user interface
is adapted to people who might as well suffer from visual disorders.
Success metrics
OtoSense is an innovative solution, far more

efficient and less expensive than the preceding
systems. This application is linked to different
connected objects such as Pebble smart
watches or Philips Hue connected bulbs.

We organized HackaTMe, a competition with 25 participants and awards of 2500 euro.

We are also organizing mobile coding courses and well probably finance a foundation
that will offer free mobile coding courses, for kids under 16. Weve participated at most
of the local mobile conferences and meet-ups.
"Bursa de fericire" is a charity project meant to help fund an oncology clinic for Marie
Curie Children's Hospital. To that effect, a story book will be published each month,
with stories written by Vasi Rdulescu and illustrations drawn by T-ME Studios artists!
All stories will be happy stories, full of positivity, about life changing events, friendship,
courage and love. In their final form, the books are carefully packed and delivered to
people all around Romania, in exchange for a donation made to Marie Curie Children's
Hospital.
