EXPLANATORY NOTES
Visitor Arrivals
1. Source of Statistics
Disembarkation/Embarkation (D/E) cards
Visitors arriving in Singapore are required to complete prescribed disembarkation/embarkation
cards which serve as the source of statistics on visitor arrivals and departures. The accuracy of
figures pertaining to the characteristics of visitors therefore depends on how accurately visitors
complete these cards.
Since April 2004, fields such as (1) Purpose of Visit (2) Accommodation (3) Frequency of Trip and
(4) Travel Arrangement had been removed from the D/E card.
Overseas Visitors Survey
Data on visitors profile are obtained mainly from the Overseas Visitors Survey. The annual survey
covers a sample of about 26,000 visitors departing Singapore via air, sea and land checkpoints.
Face-to-face interviews are conducted with visitors at the departure points throughout the year.
Methodology
The sample is selected based on a quarterly quota, which is set according to the actual visitor arrival
statistics from the same quarter of the previous year. In addition, the data collected are weighted
by country of residence, age group and length of stay, based on actual visitor arrival statistics
compiled from the D/E cards. This ensures that the profile of visitors surveyed resembles the
distribution of visitor arrivals in the total population.

2. Definitions
International Visitor Arrivals
All visitors are classified by country of residence unless otherwise stated. Total international visitor
arrivals include all visitors coming by air and sea and non-Malaysian citizens coming by land.

EXPLANATORY NOTES
Visitor Arrivals
Geographical Classification
The term "ASEAN" stands for "Association of South East Asian Nations" and refers to the
ten-country political association comprising Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Laos,
Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. However, when used in the statistical
tables in this publication, the term excludes Singapore.
Length of Stay
Data on length of stay in this report reflects the actual length of stay in Singapore. The date of
arrival is matched against the date of departure to compute the actual length of stay for each visitor.
As some visitors may not depart within the calendar year, the number of visitor departures would be
less than the total visitor arrivals for the year.
Visitor Days
Visitor Days is the total number of days that international visitors stay in a country outside of their
country of residence, whose main purpose of visit is other than the exercise of an activity
remunerated from within the country visited.
Visitor Days = Visitor Arrivals x Average Length of Stay.

Overseas Visitors Survey
Data on tourism receipts are obtained from the Overseas Visitors Survey, as well as data from
Department of Statistics and Customs Excise Department. The annual survey covers a sample of
about 26,000 visitors departing Singapore via air, sea and land checkpoints. Face-to-face

statistics from the same quarter of the previous year. In addition, the data collected are weighted
by country of residence, age group and length of stay, based on actual visitor arrival statistics
compiled from the D/E cards. This ensures that the profile of visitors surveyed resembles the
distribution of visitor arrivals in the total population.

Cruise
Cruise Statistics are provided by the Singapore Cruise Centre and SATS-Creuers Cruise Services.
Passenger throughput refers to the sum of all embarking cruise passengers (i.e. those who arrived in
Singapore by air or land but departed on a cruise), disembarking cruise passengers (i.e. those who
arrived on a cruise ship but departed by other means) and full-cruise passengers ( i.e. those who
arrived and departed on the same cruise ship). In addition, the numbers include cruise passengers
who are Singaporean citizens or permanent residents.

Incoming Passenger Carriers Flights & Seat Capacity

Statistics on incoming scheduled flights of passenger airlines to Singapore was provided by the
Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and Changi Airport Group (CAG).
The data provides flights and airline seat capacity information in terms of seat configuration, airlines
and regions/countries of origin. Flights from intermediate ports of call are excluded since the
region/country of origin of each incoming scheduled flight is defined as the place from which the
flight originates.

Singapore Outbound

All citizens and permanent residents departing by air and sea are included in the statistics.
