The UK leaves the EU

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience on UKs democratic decision to leave the European
Union
Central Idea: Born from the ashes of tragedy in Europe, the EU began to bring peace, stability
and prosperity to all members of this democratic union by allowing for money, goods/services
and people to move freely in this internal market.

The British are coming!

a. Paul Revere is credited with saying this phrase
b. It was to signal the militia of the approaching British Army
c. The situation is changing and the Brits are leaving the EU
Founded and maintained through the use of treaties the EU is given credit for
bringing more trade and less conflict
Winston Churchill had a vision for a United States of Europe
I learned about the power of the EU with regard to the worlds economy in an
international economics class and I have done extensive research on this issue since
the notice of UKs departure from this union
Today Id like to inform you on the how the EU came to be as well as the EUs
growth and what reasons the UK has for leaving such a prosperous union.

(Transition: lets start at the beginning of the EU, before it was what it is today)

Body
I.

How did the EU come to be after such great turmoil?

a. There were conflicts between European states leading to wars.
b. After WWII, not only was the European landscape riddled with destruction, but
millions upon millions of Europeans were dead
c. The slogan never again came to be after 1945 defining the want of the people to
never again be involved in a world war, so a union needed to be established
d. The EUs ability to unionize nations that are competing against each other around
Europe.
i. Trade, treaties and tariffs are established to benefit all who are involved.

(Transition: from meager beginnings to a well-defined growth the EU comes forward)

II.

Growth of the EU starts to show.

a. From six cooperating countries to twenty-eight countries
i. Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands
initially joined together.
ii. The UK joined the EU in 1973
b. A common currency is used by most of the union.
i. The euro is used by 19 of the 28 countries in the EU and by a staggering
338.6 million people every day.
ii. A common currency in countries involved in trade makes things easier for
everybody.
iii. Prosperity amongst the European nations shows as the GDP begins to
climb.

(Transition: Why the UK decided to leave the EU)

III.

The UK decides to leave the EU

a. A democratic vote of the British people vote in favor to leave the union.
i. A 52 to 48 percent margin to leave the EU
b. The euro decline since the 2008 market crash
i. The U.S. economy went into recession as did the European economy
ii. The European economy did not bounce back like the U.S.
c. Political sovereignty and economic regulation dominate the case for the Brexit
i. The British wanted the authority to return to the British parliament and the
peoples representatives.
ii. Immigration is unlimited in the Eurozone and the people of the UK dont
think the economy can handle that.

Conclusion
I.
II.
III.

While the vote of the people elected to leave the union this wont happen
overnight, if at all.
All great things are said to come to an end and perhaps other countries will follow
suit.
As I stated before the EU was founded on humble beginnings and showed
prosperity for all those involved, but the market crash of 2008 affected not just the
U.S. but the world and a lot of countries couldnt bounce back.
