Fall 2016

MEE 323 Computer Aided Engineering II

Homework #1
Assigned:August 26, 2016

Due Date:September 02, 2016, by 11:59 PM

Instructions:
Please create a folder named Homework_1 in your U:\ drive. Save all of your model data and a
copy of your homework report in this folder. You may use this word file as a template for your
homework report.
Homework Objectives:
Become familiar with sketching using Design Modeler in ANSYS. Create 3-D models from
sketches using various methods such as Extrude, Revolve, and Sweep.
Please answer the following question:
(1) Describe briefly the concept of finite element analysis. Also describe in your own words the
basic steps to be carried out in a finite element analysis.
ANSYS Exercises:
Read section 2.3 of the textbook it contains a helpful overview of the sketching tools available
in Design Modeler.
Question 1:
Two steel rods of diameter 25mm are joined to form a "T" part as shown below. A 10mm
diameter through hole and a 10mmx10mm square through hole are placed as shown (the 65mm
dimension locates the left edge of the 10x10 square through hole). Create a model of the part.

Fall 2016
(1) Show 5 to 6 figures of intermediate modeling steps including at least one sketch, and figures
of the part at every major step of the modeling effort (each
(each extrusion both to add material
and cut material).

Question 2:
Create a model of the structural steel anchor device shown below. All dimensions are in mm.

(1) Sketch the cross section shown on the XY plane and revolve the sketch about the Y axis to
create the model. Note that the center of the 5mm diameter groove is aligned with the outer
surfaces of the anchor as shown in the sketch.

Fall 2016
(2) Show a figure with the sketch with strong dimensions and a figure of the final model.

Fall 2016
Question 3:
Create a model of the clevis yoke shown below. The yoke is 4.5 inches in overall length, 2.5
inches at its widest point, and the opening is 2 inches wide.

(1) Create the sketch as shown and extrude symmetrically for 0.5 inches on each side (total
extrusion will be 1 inch). Show a figure of the final sketch making sure the sketch is fully
dimensioned (all strong dimensions). Use the Symmetry, Equal Length, and Equal
Radius constraints to reduce the number of dimensions that need to be specified.
Hint: Try using Arc by Tangent to create some of the fillets if the fillet tool does not work.

Fall 2016
(2) Create a sketch of the slot of the clevis yoke on an appropriate
appropriate perpendicular plane as shown
below. Extrude this sketch using Cut Material for the Operation and the Through All
option for the Extent Type in the details of the extrusion.

(3) Show a figure of the final model.

Fall 2016
Question 4:
Create the model of the Microgripper and glass bead from Section 2.6 of the textbook, the
dimensions of which are shown below. Create just one half of the model and use the mirror copy
tool (Create Menu > Body Transformation > Mirror) to create the other half.
alf.

(1) Show figures of intermediate steps including 2 to 3 figures during the sketching process.
process
Show a figure of the final sketch with all strong dimensions.

Fall 2016

Show a figure of the first extrusion (of just half the microgripper), and a figure of the final part
with the glass bead.
