Broadband Requirements:
1. Any PC with at least 256MB RAM
2. Operating System recommended:
Microsoft windows Xp/Vista/Win7x86/64
All Linux distros Ubuntu, Susee, redhat etc
For Network with greater than 10 Computers
Windows server 2003/2008RTM2
Redhat/Fedora server
Install any one of the server edition OS in a PC and
use proxy server for sharing.
3. Recommended browsers
Internet Explorer8 or Firefox3
(without any add-on tools like Google, yahoo
toolbars )
4. Network Port
It is recommended to use a NIC card with 10/100
Mbps Ethernet Port normally available with all
latest PC otherwise you can use USB port of the PC.
Important: use a standard CAT5 wiring for
connecting all computers to a HUB/Switch or ADSL
Modem

1. Check the Wires

The leading-in cable (drop wire) from the junction

box (DP box) to your house should be as straight as
possible, should be of a single length without any
joints. The wires should not be coiled anywhere and
should be away from electrical lines. With these
types of irregularities, i.e with joints or coiled or
near power cables, your phone might work fine but
the DSL link may not hold and work satisfactorily.
2. Splitters and Parallel telephones
Never by-pass the splitter. The splitter does the job
of separating the high frequency ADSL signals from
low frequency telephone signals. If the splitter is not
installed correctly, the broadband connection is
likely to go down every time the phone rings. Any
parallel phone connections should be after the
splitter and not before it. The line from the
exchange should first enter into the splitters Line
jack. The phone should be connected only to the
phone jack of the splitter. The ADSL modem should
be connected to the modem/DSL jack of the splitter.
A two way jack may be connected to this phone
jack to install your parallel telephones. The wire
leading into the modem should not be running
parallel or close to electrical wiring.

Typical House Wiring

See the labels in the splitter box.

External line from exchange is to be

connected to Line port of the splitter.

ADSL port of splitter is connected to modem

adsl port.

No other devices should be connected before

Splitter line.
You can connect any number of phones in parallel
in the Phone jack of the splitter.

Positioning of Wireless Modem (Wi-Fi Router)

Though the wireless signals from the ADSL

Modem with wireless capabilities typically
operating at a frequency of 2.4GHz, can reach Wi-Fi
enabled laptop or PC within a range of around 50
meters, the brick walls and reflective surfaces will
weaken and bounce the signals respectively. It will
be better to place the Wi-Fi Modem (Router) on a
higher place to avoid physical obstructions.
Another main source of interference is
the cordless phone. Keep the router as far away
from the cordless phone or choose cordless phones
that use different frequencies.
To increase the wireless range, one can also
use a wireless repeater purchased from local
market. Before purchasing, ensure from the vendor,
it supports the Wi-Fi router you have.

Instructions to broadband customers

All telephone instruments/Fax/parallel

phones/EPABX / Caller ID should be connected to
Phone Jack of filter only.

If DSL Link is not steady check splitter

connectivity. Start browsing only after DSL link is
steady.

Do not reset modem; it will lose all present

configurations.

Switch off modem when it is not used.

At the time of lightning, please disconnect

exchange line from Modem.

When Operating system is re-installed, make

sure network adapter driver is installed. If USB
port is used install the driver from the modem CD.

Check Network adapter status here

(Start>run>sysdm.cpl>deviceMgr)

Wi-Fi Security:
The security options of wireless router should
fully be utilized to avoid someone from your
neighborhood accessing your modem. The wireless
signals might reach the neighboring houses, and if
the security options are not enabled, there is every
chance of misuse of your broadband connection.
Hence it is advised to check the security options are
enabled.
Customers can open the modem webpage as
stated earlier and check the wireless security
options. The very basic level of security is by giving
the wireless key, which will be asked by the modem
when a Laptop/PC is trying to access the modem for
the first time.
There are two types security key algorithm.
One is WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and another
WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access).
The WPA is more secured and recommended
by BSNL. The next (Advanced) level of security is
MAC filtering by which only your Laptop/PC will be
permitted to access the modem, even if someone
knows your security key.

How to enable wireless security?

Open the modem setup page as stated earlier
and check the wireless> Basic > SSID
(SSID-Service Set Identifier)
Change the SSID as per your desire
Eg: MyhomeBB
Click Apply/Save.
Now under the heading Wireless Security
Select > Authentication type : WPA-PSK (personal)
Type > Pre-shared Key: BsnL123456indiA
(At least 12 alpha numeric characters in WPA key)
Save/Reboot the modem.
Now configure your laptop or wireless PDA.
Access point or SSID or Network name= MyhomeBB
Password=Bsnl123456indiA
Network Type=Infrastructure.
Any other wireless profile already set in your laptop
may be removed.

How to access my email?

You can access the mail from the following websites
http://dataone.in (for dataone users)
or http://mail.bsnl.in ( for all other users)
Since mail-id given by BSNL is POP3 account it will
be convenient for accessing email through the
applications like MsOutlook, Outlook express,
Eudora or Incredimail.
Important:
1. Check the mail box periodically for important
system generated messages like usage alert,
password changed etc.
2. Restrictions in mail attachments:
Some type of file extensions as attachments are
blocked by server as these are most commonly
propagating virus. Few of the extensions not
allowed are gif, pif, inf, exe, vbs, bat, msi and scr. It
is safer to send a file with zip or rar format.

Configuring Outlook Express

Before proceeding, confirm your mail-id is in
dataone.in domain or bsnl.in domain.
Now, Open Outlook Express

How to control my usage?

Watch-out for bandwidth overhead:
Many applications like Windows updates, anti-virus
updates and other software updates will be using
the broadband connection in the background. Some
of these updates might ask for confirmation before
downloading, many may not even ask and will be
simply running in the background which will affect
your browsing /download speed. One can find-out
the applications which are running, by going to
the Task Manager (Press Ctrl-Shift-Esc keys
together to get into the Task Manager).
You may shut down such of those applications
which are running without your consent. But
beware that shutting down some vital applications
required by your operating system inadvertently
will cause hanging of your system. Windows
updates, Anti-virus updates etc could be scheduled
to run manually. This will help in utilizing the
bandwidth effectively.
The Nuisance & Danger of Viruses
You might some time feel that your broadband was
quite good some time back but it is slow now a day.

One of the major reasons for this is likely to be your

machine getting infected with a computer virus.
A Virus or Trojan could indeed be using up your
usage allowance as its likely to be downloading
data / advertisements etc
Adware, spywares too will affect your speed. Hence
it is very important to have a good anti-virus
software and spyware, adware detectors in your
system. Regular updates to these software and
Windows updates are also a must.
Aware of free wares
Many free software and tools are offered by many
websites. But be careful in selecting this software as
some of this software will overload your operating
system, some may act as spyware, and some may
eat away your bandwidth. A browser like Opera or
Firefox lets you switch off images, flash banners,
java scripts etc. which will cause your browsing
speed to be slightly higher. But if you overdo things,
many websites which requires these settings will
not open for you. Keep always an unmodified copy
of Internet explorer in such cases so as to use it
when some websites are not opening with your
other browsers.

Crossing the Free-usage

At present for Broadband customers (Customers of
bsnl.in domain) for certain plans; you will receive
intimation when crossing the monthly free usage
limit. You may kindly press the button, I agree to
continue to enjoy the broadband which is
chargeable as per your plan. However, we request
you to kindly switch-off and switch-on the modem
after pressing the I Agree button please.
Speed Vs data rate
Browsers and other file transfer agents tend to
show speed in terms of kilobytes per second, usually
with one or two decimal places. Thus, you may see
your browser report a "Transfer rate:" being "XX
KB/Sec", (along with the flying paper animation)
Given a broadband line speed, dividing by 8 and
taking off 13% for ATM overhead is a reasonable
estimate of the maximum likely data download
speeds (in bytes of data) you will manage to get.

Adsl line speed Vs Data rate

256Kbps
512Kbps
1Mbps
2Mbps
8Mbps

28KB/Sec
56KB/Sec
112KB/Sec
224KB/Sec
896KB/Sec

How to verify the speed?

Best way is to download a file from a good server
like cnet.com, microsoft.com, virtualbox.org etc .
You can also check the speed from the following
sites
http://dataone.in
http://speedguide.net
http://uk.abeltronica.com

Factors affecting broadband speed:

1. Broadband plan
Choose the right plan to suit your
needs. Unlimited plans are slower than limited
usage plans. If you want to download lot of content
at high speed choose fair usage plans means you
can download faster up to a usage limit then it slow
down to 256Kbps.
2. Computer setup
Operating system version Win7/Linux
Availability of Hardware resources
Firewall(hardware version is better)
Antivirus Kaspersky/Bitdefender/Nod32 etc
Download manager-Check speed settings
3. DNS issues-Contact NIB for getting right DNS
4. ADSL Modem
wrong MTU setting(use 1492/1452)
DSP chip used.
Type of IOS used in the modem
5. Internet infrastructure

Not all Websites offer same speed of download,

no matter how fast your connection is.
Internet Traffic- During busy hour periods you
may experience slower speeds.
Exchange contentionMaximum contention ratio set by BSNL is
1:25
BSNL divides the home user traffic from
business users across the network.
6. Line quality:
Check your line SNR & line speed. To do this,
first you need to enter into the Modems
webpage by typing http://192.168.1.1 in your
browser as stated earlier.
Now inside the modem setup page
Under the heading
Device Info> Statistics> ADSL
you will be able to see the SNR Margin and
maximum attainable speed. The SNR should
be higher than 20 though anything above 10
is just enough. If SNR going down below 10, it
is time to complain about the line condition
to our Helpline.
