STORY TELLING
IMPORTANCE AND FUNCTIONS OF STORYTELLING

There are countless reasons why storytelling is important. First off, it can
contribute to spreading cultures and values. In order to do so, the stories told
should include information, moral values and knowledge. Storytelling is helpful in
instilling cultures among the society as it often gives a deep impact to the
audience. Moreover, storytelling is also a great tool for education, the audience
may inherit the elements of the stories through books, and put them into
practice in real life. Storytelling may also be a good influence to audiences for
charity purposes. After a certain touching or deep-meaning story is told, the
oxytocin level of the audience will rise, and they are usually willing to donate or
give their effort to charity, besides having the feeling of empathy or sympathy to
the people in difficult situations.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO PROMOTE STORY EDUCATION

AMONG PEOPLE?

Firstly, it is important to support good authors with their great writing and
books. To write a story that would blow peoples minds, authors not only need to
stress on values based elements and creativity, but they also have to include
real-life experiences, which indicates the authors should pour a lot of effort into
their writing. Thus, we shall widely spread the good books and writing, other
than supporting them collectively. The role of reading and storytelling campaigns
cannot be ignored. These activities will encourage or persuade people to start
listening to good stories or to read, and thus learning important and useful
things from them to widen their horizons. Also, we should never underestimate
an uncensored and well-funded library, as it can be a core or the stepping stone
of storytelling.

HOW TO BECOME A GOOD STORYTELLER?

To be a good storyteller, we have to take risks. Everyone has different opinions

and their own perspectives in media, and the opponents may criticize our stories.
If we are not able to create and tell our stories because we are afraid of getting
in trouble, there would be no progress at all in spreading values and cultures
through storytelling. Innovation and creativity have their own risks, and these
challenges are what storytellers should face. Next, storytellers should overcome
their fear of connecting with people in order to excel. If we are not creating a
rapport with our audiences, there would be no point in telling our stories as they
will never grad our points and objectives. Also, it is not necessary for
storytellers to tell or write only what they know, as boundaries are meant to be
broken. Besides, understanding the emotional context of situations and
experiencing the emotions of life is important to storytellers in order to be more
relatable to the audiences. Storytellers tell stories with important elements such
as life experiences and positive values. So, if we have this mindset where a story
is only meant to spread information, we are only an interpreter, but not a
storyteller.

HOW DO LOCAL STORYTELLERS AND AUTHORS NAVIGATE STRICT

CENSORSHIP IN MALAYSIA?

In Malaysia, the censorship policies are tough, and it is something which requires
our attention as storytellers. For example, the novel Fifty Shades of Grey was
banned in Malaysia even though it was published for 3 years. The reason is
because the book had contents related to sex and religion. As a matter of fact,
the contents were associated with the measures of the Malaysias government
and it is not easy to improve with our own force. So, will the authors and
storytellers still work on authentic stories while censorship is taken into
consideration? The answer is yes. The only thing they can do is hope to be lucky
with the publishing, as there are no other alternatives. Thus, if there is nothing
they can do about it, they shall do something worthwhile. They might opt to say
things in their stories in an indirect way, or to be cautious with choices of words
in order to avoid censorship. Anyway, storytellers and authors should be bold and
stick to their main and positive objective, which is to tell stories which are
meaningful and valuable, despite strict censorship policies in our country.

MALAYSIAN CINEMA

REDUX

Dato Kamil Othman is the director general of FINAS, Vice President

For Creative Industry Strategy and Policy and also the Director
General of National Film Development Corporation Malaysia. He has
been in media and film industry for more than 15 years.
At the Cooler Lumpur Festival, which was held at Publika, on
September 11, 2016, he stated that the Malaysian film industry has
been revived, all thanks to lots of successful local movies over the years.
Movies such as Ola Bola, Polis Evo and The Journey have been the
most remarkable movies in Malaysia and these movies gave a great
impact to the society. In fact, the number of movies which were
produced in a year have increased quite drastically within just a couple
of years time, with all the modern technologies that we have today.
The process of approving a film requires a lot of work and is quite
tedious, said Dato Kamil, during his explanation on the details in
movie making processes at the event. He also added that there are a lot
of film scripts which are still pending for approval by the gatekeepers in
Malaysia.
FINAS improves films by having film festivals that is open for the
public, so that they can get more opinions or suggestions from the
people. This also enables the younger generation to share their ideas in
script writing or movie making. By doing so, the future of our local
media or film industry would not be a thing to worry about. In the
festival, there are two departments: the brain (ideas) and the script
writers. They want the younger generation to learn about how films and
scripts are produced.
Besides that, Dato Kamil mentioned that the younger generation may
have a lot of fresh, innovative and young ideas compared to the ones
who have worked in the industry for years. He also talked a lot about
the International Film Festival. The local media industry is trying the
best to expose and promote Malaysias great films to the International
Film Festival so that these films can be introduced to the world and
popularized globally.
