CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Technology or the science of craft is defined as the collection of techniques, skills,
methods, and processes used in the production of services or in the accomplishment of
objectives, such as scientific investigation. It can also be the knowledge of techniques,
processes, etc. that can be embedded in machines, computers, devices, and factories
operated by individuals even without detailed information of the workings of such things
(Wikipedia). With its usefulness, this process or knowledge has been applied in different
areas, including in the field of education.
Technology can be a powerful learning tool. When used effectively, it brings
learning to great new heights, said by Mr. Esateban Cruz of Lincoln Land Community
College. With the continuous application of technology in education, learning and
acquiring information is just one click away, which gives a more desirable environment
for students and teachers. Doing homework, research, presentations, etc. are a lot easier
to accomplish, unlike before where it seems everything you do should be done manually.
Books have been turned into e-books, pencils became touch pens, and papers converted
into touch pads. Truthfully, using technology has been an effective way in attaining a
fruitful education. In fact, with the pervasiveness of technology in the field of education,
there are now terms like Educational Technology and ICT (Information and
Communications Technology) which has a connection regarding educational status and
learning processes.

Nevertheless, there are also researches that reveals that technology may cause harm in
the academic performances of students. Internet addiction, abusive, and improper
handling of gadgets are some factors connected with technology that could affect the
study habits of students that may also lead to the downgrade of their grades in school.
Tapscott (2009) and Sprenger (2010) stated that technology changes the way how
students learn. These contradictions found with the usefulness of technology to the
academic performance of leraners lead to the creation of this research. As the evolution of
technology goes on, this study aims to find out its effects in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng
Maynila students. It targets to not only to give knowledge of the advantages and risks
inclined with the use of technology, but also to provide recommendations that can help
the readers in how can we imply the science of craft properly and efficiently. Another
reason of the existence of this study is to acquire further knowledge of other impacts of
the use of technology in terms of social, health, and behavior.

C. Significance of the Study

Students - With this research, students will have more knowledge of how can
technology affect their academic performances. Moreover, this research can also
help in disciplining them in using technology if they discover the health risks and

other factors that may include in handling them.

Teachers - This study can help the teachers in understanding more about the
behavior of their students, and also the possible reasons behind the increase or
decrease of learners academic performance in regards to the influence of
technology. In addition, they can also ascertain if what method of teaching will be

more effective to use, the traditional way or with the application of technology?
Parents - Parents will have more information about the effects of technology in
the academic performance of their children, and also the other health risks it

includes that they should be aware of.

Government/Department of Education - This research could help the
government in abolishing the percentage of students who fail in school.
Additionally, they could discover if the use of technology will give a huge
advancement in the educational status of the country or not.

D. Scope and Limitation

This research will primarily tackle about the effects of technology in the academic
performance of students. It will discuss of what it can do to their understanding of
lessons, class participation, grades, study habits, and the way how they accomplish their
school works. Additionally, in the review of related literature of this study will give some
information about the problems involved in using technology in classrooms.
Even though this study has a connection with internet, social media, gadgets, etc.
It will focus more on discussing the effects of technology in student achievement as a
whole, and not about other subtopics that has a connection with it.
CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
A. Review of Related Literature
Pervasiveness of the Use of Technology among Teachers and Students
As the use of technology in education goes on, we can say that the rate of teachers
and students using it also increases. Different surveys have found out the number of
population that uses technology in education throughout the years.
The U.S. Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics
or NCES (2010) stated that rookie teachers will use more likely computers and the
internet in completing their task. Additionally, to those who teach in the utmost of 9
years of experience are more expected to use the computer and internet to
communicate with their colleagues compared to those 20 or higher years of
experience.

According to the study of CourseSmart and Wakefield Research (2013)

surveying 500 enrolled college students, 99% of them owned at least one digital
device, where laptop is the most common. About 10% check their devices for every
10 minutes and 79% of them find using such technologies save them time for learning
and studying.
Furthermore, based on the survey of ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students
and Information Technology (2015), with respondents of 50,274 students form 11
countries and 13,276 faculty members from 10 countries, 91% of the students owns a
laptop, and 92% of them has a smartphone. Consequently, teachers also supports less
traditional educational models: with 65% for open educational resources and 37%
badgers or digital credentials.
Effective Application of Technology in Education
Borrow et al. (2009) analyzed the effect of an instructional pre-algebra and algebra
program on students test scores in the US, and concluded that adopting an instructional
computer program can improve student achievement.
Based on 2012 ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information
Technology, 75% of college students says that technology aids them in achieving their
academic outcomes. Moreover, even in terms of communication, students finds
technology important, three out of 5 says its significant to have an online forum with
other students. Furthermore, in terms of their academic environment, students prefer with
more use of technology. 74% of students say that they have taken at least one course that
includes online components, and 64% of them strongly agrees that technology elevates

10

the level of teaching. 55% of students also wished that their teachers used simulations
and educational games more.
According to Pearson (2013) college students believe that tablets can enhance their
learning skills. Six out of ten (62%) students trust that tablets help them to perform better
in classes.
Gillium (2013) stated that regardless of what subject educators teach, integrating
technology gives students the opportunity to develop skills useful beyond the four walls
of classrooms. Technology, if integrated and balanced appropriately with the curriculum
and with student needs, can make teachers more effective as educators.
Meanwhile, in the survey results conducted by Elston (2013) teachers were likely to
most agree that technology helped them build their confidence. Moreover, they also
stated that the other benefits of using technology is that it enables them to access a wealth
of additional content or information. In addition, technology helps the students develop
real world skills.
While from the findings of PBS LearningMedia (2013) in pre-K-12 teachers, 74%
of them stated that technology enables them to reinforce and expand on content. Another
74% said they use technology to motivate students to learn, and 73% to respond to a
variety pf learning styles. Lastly, seven out of ten teachers or 69% of surveyed reported
that technology allows them to do much more than ever before for their students.
Furthermore, a study by McGraw Hill (2015) stated that 77% of students that the
science of craft helped hem improve their grades, and 62% said that technologies made
them feel better prepared for classes.

11

On the latest survey of ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information

Technology (2015), 93% of students believe that their laptops are important for their
academic success. Moreover, 63% of them, say that technology makes them feel
connected with what is going on in the institution, 52% with the other students, and 51%
to their instructors. Before, in 2013 25% of students says that they learn most with no
online components, last year, it lessened down to 12%.
Adekunle, Adepoju, and Abdullahi (2015) concluded in their research that the
utilization of computers had motivated students to commit to learning and participate
actively in teaching and learning activities.
Issues involved in using Technology in Classroom
In the article of Doering (2010), it stated there the top ten issues in todays
technology use in education: Accountability, funding, The Digital Divide, racial and
gender equity, role of distance education, privacy and safety, viruses and hacking, online
plagiarism, anti-technology sentiments, and information literacy.
Also, according to Porter (2013) teachers have problems in the unnecessary use of
gadgets of students during class hours. Educators are forced to perform the put that
away, unplug that, please log off statements every class period, leading to the waste of
discussion time.
On the survey of Elston (2013) 76% of her respondents (most probably, teachers)
find it difficult to prevent students going off on a tangent. Comments reinforce that
students are distracted by social media.

12

Klein (2010) concluded that technology is a tool that can enhance learning but cannot
independently be relied upon to increase student academic performance. Even Dror
(2009) and Honan (2010) assert that teachers often rely upon technology, rather than
using it for what is intended because of lack of training and poorly communicated
objectives.
B. Synthesis
This study is related to the thesis conducted by J. Mariah Brown in December
2011: Does the Use of Technology in the classroom increase Students Overall
Academic Performance? The review discussed the effects technology or
technological enhanced learning (TEL) programs on the overall academic
performance of K-12 students and the factors that can increase the effectiveness of
these type of programs.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
A. Research Design
As the advancement of technology in the field of education this research aims to
describe the characteristics, behavior, attitudes, and perception of the respondents in
regards to the effects of technology in their academic status. It primarily focuses to
answer the question what, instead of why or how. Without altering any factors of
the environment we gathered data and studied to find out the solution in the proposed
problems.
Moreover, the results of this study have been evaluated without influencing the
respondents according with the said topic, but only through a mere observation and
data collection. Although, this paper cannot be used to be a definitive answer to
something or prove a certain hypothesis. With the said statements above as a basis,
the design of this research is descriptive.
B. Research Local

Known as The Peoples Caring Unversity, this research has been conducted in the
Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (University of the City of Manila) located at
Intramuros, Manila. PLM is an institution created by the Congress of the Philippines by
the virtue of Republic Act. 4196, also known as the University Charter. This law was
16

approved by the President of the Republic of the Philippines way back on June 19, 1965,
the same day the countrys national hero Dr. Jose Rizal was born.
Moreover, it is the first institution of higher learning in the Philippines to have an
official name in Filipino, showing the main goal of a true university, which is the creation
of wisdom, where there will be no short of total understanding as well as production of
wise men or pantas. The university, based on the studies is among the top five schools
nationwide in terms of board exam passing rate where it is one of the three public
universities in the top ten category. Now, it is considered to be the top 4 university which
companies give priority in hiring first grads based on the survey of JobStreet Philippines
February 22 to March 6 this year.
Additionally, Dr. Maria Leonora V. de Jesus is the said president of the university at
present. Concurrently, shaping skills of 10,000 undergraduates and 1,000 graduate
students annually, envisioned to be great men and women whose hands will chart out a
better future for the
beloved city of Manila
and their dear country,
Philippines.

C. Instrumentatio
n
Before distributing the online questionnaire, an outline of the survey has
been validated by locals and expertise. It is inspired by the Class Technology

17

Survey by ASSETT. Then, the researcher transferred the survey online through
https://app.surveygizmo.com/login/v1, and completely furnished it on March 8,
2016. The same day, she distributed the link of her survey through the social
media facebook.com. Finally, on March 15, 2016 she stopped accepting responses
and had gathered data with 34 respondents from the 2 blocks of BSCS-IT
freshmen in PLM.
The survey tackle questions which are related to the statement of the
problem. It is composed of 11 questions which are all necessary for the
completion of this research. The questions are connected with the behavior and
preferences of the respondents about the intervention of technology in regards to
their academic performance.
At any rate, a survey or a questionnaire is a research instrument consisting
of a series of questions to gather information from the respondents. They are often
designed for statistical analysis of the responses.
D. Procedure
The researcher first created the chapter I of the research, describing first
about the topic, identifying out the problems that will be answered by this paper,
giving out its significance towards people, and saying what will be the scope of it.
Next, through searching and surfing on the internet, the researcher
gathered different related literature for the chapter II finding out other researches,
journals, issues etc. which have connection on the said topic. It also involved the
definition the terms that have been used throughout the research.
As for the chapter III, the researcher discussed and written about on what
methods she used for accomplishing and gathering data for the research. She have

18

written in this paper of what process she used to evaluate the data from the
respondents.
Lastly, for the chapters IV and V, the researcher finalize the results of the
study. She included discussions with each of the question included in the
questionnaire, analyzed it, then summarized, concluded based on the findings, and
proposed recommendations for the findings that have been produced.
E. Statistical Analysis of Data
In selected questions, the researcher applied Descriptive Statistics in
Central tendency to evaluate the data that has been collected. The researcher will
summarize the quantitative data from the respondents. The main goal is to
describe all the results of the data that has been gathered. Though this method
requires the average and median, this research will only include the mode, since it
is only necessary factor.
For finding the mode, the researcher put up the dependent variables in
order and figure out the middle value. Lastly, the researcher gets the mode which
has the highest frequency in the set of dependent variables.
The researcher will find out which of the following options found in the
questionnaire has the most frequency to be chosen, from them she will draw out
conclusions and recommendations.

CHAPTER V
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION
A. Summary
Question No. 1: Majority of the respondents are from BSCS-IT Block 1.
Question No. 2: There is an equal number of male and female respondents.
Question No. 3: 15-17 years old is the range of age of the most number of
respondents who answered the online survey.
Question No. 4: Most of the students who respond to the survey got a GWA in
the range of 2.00-2.99.
Question No. 5: All of the respondents owns at least one technology.
Question No. 6: A greater amount of students always do (most likely) academicrelated things online.
Question No. 7: BSCS-IT freshmen of PLM likely use technology for leisure.
Question No. 8: Majority of the respondents use technology 1-2 hours for
academic purposes.
Question No. 9: Technology mostly has a positive effect towards the academic
performance of students.

27

Question No. 10: Greater number of students prefer to use technology-related

tools in studying.
Question No. 11: More respondents are in favor for their instructors use
technology for teaching.
B. Conclusion
From the gathered data, these are the findings or conclusions derived.
Though, question numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4, will not be discussed, since, they are
only for clarifying specific factors to ensure they are truly qualified to be the
respondents of the said survey.
Conclusion for Q5: BSCS-IT freshmen in PLM now have access to different
kinds of technology, like laptops, cellphones, desktop computers and the like.
Analyzing this, we can therefore conclude that they have knowledge of using
them and have access on different factors in relation with technology. For
example, internet, social media, video games, and so on.
Conclusion for Q6: The fact that the online society is greatly related to
technology, we can arrive for a conclusion that the use of technology is pervasive
in terms of doing researches, communication, etc. Majority of the respondents
always use online services in doing such things, which can also mean that they
trust that technology can help them accomplish their task and socialize with other
people, like their professors and fellow college students.
Conclusion for Q7 & Q8: If we compare the results of the data gathered in
questions number 7 and 8, we see that the time of technology for leisure is much
greater than using technology for academic purposes. We can therefore conclude

28

that technology can influence the respondents do things other than study, and
focus on enhancing their academic performances.
Conclusion for Q9: If we analyze the responses from question number nine.
Overall, technology has a positive effect in the academic performance of students.
Most of them agreed that they agreed that technology motivates them to study,
enhances their grade in school, and helps them do their school works on time. In
addition, in regards to their learning process and class participations, most of them
responded that technology helps them understand the lesson and makes them
listen in class discussions more.
However, there are also negative effects that technology have, where it
pushes the respondents to cram and procrastinate for academic-related purposes.
The gap of those who agreed that technology is one of the reasons for the
downgrade of their grades from those who disagreed is bothersome.
Conclusion for Q10: BSCS-IT freshmen students from PLM prefer the use of
technology in studying or preparing for their exams and academic activities.
Therefore, we can conclude that they find technology more comfortable to use in
studying, probably one reason is because it is easier to gather information on
technologyrelated factors like the internet.
Conclusion for Q11: Most of the respondents preferred for their instructors to use
technologies in teaching in classrooms. Hence, they could understand the lessons
more with the use of technology.
C. Recommendations
1. Technology is now pervasive in the current generation. Nevertheless, we
should remember to not abuse the use of it nor use it to perform illegal acts.
2. Now that malwares are deceitful, students that use the online services more
often should be careful, for viruses, scams and like.

3. Although technologies provide so much entertainment, students should not

dwell on it longer than necessary. We should use technology in accomplishing
more important things, like studying, and doing school works.
4. Use technology wisely and efficiently to improve your academic status.
Though technology makes doing school activities easier, it should not be a
reason to cram and procrastinate. Moreover, the downgrade of your grade are
much more reliant to your actions towards your study, and not other factors
like technology.
5. Whatever method you want to use in studying as long as youre comfortable
and can study well with it, its fine.
6. The government or educational

organizations

should

pursue

the

implementation of technology in schools. Now that technology is

continuously advancing, let us not waste the opportunity to use it for the
development of our countrys educational status.
7. This study may not be a strong evidence for the truly identifying effects of
technology in the academic performance of students. The researcher
recommends that for those who pursues to research the same topic or agenda
include a much larger number of participants, if possible, worldwide.
