Hazardous Waste
For many years, societies like towns and cities have been producing chemical waste. The disposal sites
where the waste of this society is brought is only picked with the factor of it being convenient and the
potential environmental impacts it could cause is mostly ignored. Engineering decisions used to be made with
the lack of planning, resulting to a bad product. These engineers usually solve disposal problems by filling and
dumping waste products out back.
Things changed when everybody realized that the air, water, and land should be taken care of for the
sake of each other and for the future generation who will use it. Governments have responded to this
concerns by giving out laws that protects this things from being polluted.
Hazardous has many criteria into classifying anything that is hazardous, different agencies use
descriptions like toxic, explosive, and radioactive to label a waste as hazardous. The federal government tried
to make an official classification of these hazardous waste in which they are separated depending on the
degree of instability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity. Radioactive waste are hazardous but it is not included in
hazardous waste because it requires a different handling, processing, and disposal.
Waste processing and handling is an important part on the journey of hazardous waste. This wastes
can either be stabilized or detoxified or somehow rendered harmless in a treatment process similar to the
following. Chemical Stabilization/Fixation this process is simply mixing the chemicals with another fluid that
can result into the solidification of both materials, this would trap the hazardous chemicals and pollutants into
the mixture. Volume Reduction from the word itself, a process would be made to reduce the volume of the
waste through incineration so it would not take up to much space on the disposal site, but concerns such as
air emission and ash production are taken into consideration because it has a potential to cause more
environmental problems. Waste Segragation in all kinds of waste this is a very effective method in handling
them, because if the wastes are separated into different types, it is easier to decide how to dispose them

because they will all have uniform reactions based on how they are disposed or processed. Detoxification there
are many process onto how to detoxify wastes this includes neutralization, ion exchange, incineration,
pyrolysis, aerated lagoons, and waste stabilization ponds. Degradation to degrade a hazardous waste means
to make it less hazardous. Encapsulation this means to encapsulate or put the hazardous waste into a
container.
Hazardous waste are transported across nation on different vehicles. Since transporting it would mean
it will be near other peoples because it will travel along the roads that the people use, It is a threat to the
public and to the environment if it is not transported properly. There are different ways to transport hazardous
waste, which include Haulers which are the trucks and workers who haul the hazardous waste, Hazardous

Waste manifest is like an organized way of transporting the hazardous waste because everything will be
recoreded including the contents of the waste, destination and if the waste reached its destination, Packaging
hazardous waste is very important in order to avoid its exposure to the public. Labeling and Placarding is also
important before wastes are transferred because it gives information about the waste, and warns if it is
explosive, flammable, corrosive, etc. So it would be easier to identify and decide how to handle such waste.

Accident and Incident Reporting any accidents and incidents must be reported immediately so that the official
can respond to the accident. It will also be recorded so that future similar accidents can be avoided. This
wastes, similar to other waste, can also be recovered, there might be useful chemicals that can be recovered
from the waste. Information Clearinghouse in my understanding are like a listing of chemical waste that can
be used by other organizations, and this is where they try to find it. Materials Exchanges this is different from
information clearinghouses because the waste waste produced still has potential users, this is where they buy
or exchange and accept waste.
There are siting considerations should be made for the location of hazardous waste management
facilities. It should not be near high groundwater tables or near bodies of water to prevent potential pollution
of it. Climate is one factor into choosing because a place with occurring hurricanes and tornadoes can destroy
or affect the landfills of waste. It should also have a stable geologic formation it should not have cracks and
fissure to avoid leakage of the waste. The place chosen for the facility should be away from wild animals, or

endangered species so that it could no longer give more harm to the ecosystem. The land used must be have
a low demand so that there are low chances of the land being used by humans, therefore no possibility of
direct human contact with the waste. Transportation of the waste should be considered because it is ideal that
the travel time from collecting the waste to the disposal site should be set to a minimum. Like the solid waste
disposals that we have already discussed, the design, operation and site closure of the landfill to be used for
the waste is a big factor and it is also the same as a landfill of a solid waste. The aviation also uses different
chemicals in its procedures. So it also has the potential to produce hazardous waste, so the aviation industry
should also be effective into disposing any hazardous waste they can produce so that it will not be another
environmental problem
