system:eithertheserun/pass
combinationsattackboxdefenders
ortheyattackperimeterdefenders.
Theseareprimarilysecondlevel
playerssuchaslinebackersordrop
safeties(posingaslinebackers).By
definitionaboxdefenderisadefenderthatisintheframeworkofatacklebox.
Now,eachcoachhashisowndefinitionofatacklebox,manyofwhichareexplainedinthis
report.But,forallintentsandpurposes,thiscasewillbebasedsolelyuponRPOconcepts
thatareusedtomanipulatethoseinteriorlinebackersthatmayhaveadualrun/pass
responsibilityinzonecoverage.Wellstartwiththemostpopularoftheseconcepts,the
Stick/Draw.
TheStick/DrawConcept:
ThemainpremiseoftheStick/DrawisaDrawrunconceptmixedwithaStickpassconcept
(simpleenough).Typicallyspeaking,thepostsnapdecisionismadebythequarterbackoff
theplaysideinsidelinebackerwhowilleithercommittotacklingtheballcarrier(onthe
draw)orworktoplaythestickrouteinthepassingconcept.
TheStickDrawisbyfarthemostcommonRPOusedbycoachesandapparentlythemost
efficientaswell.Infact,53.9percentofcoachessaidtheyaveragedbetweenfiveand
sevenyardsperplayonthisconcept.Sincethisentirecaseiscenteredonthe
Stick/Drawconcept,wewillbeginwithperhapsthemostimportantelementoftheplay,the
presnapidentificationprocess.Forresearchpurposes,themostcommonStickDrawroute
progressionisasfollows:

coacheswesurveyedchoosetoutilizetheStick/Drawoutoftripsor3x1sets,itsimportant
tonotewhetherornotthedefensepushesitscoveragetothetripsside.
WesternConnecticutStateUniversityusesanA,B,andCsystemtoidentifydefenses.We
foundthisinteresting,becausetheydonotreferenceplayersbypositions(suchasMike,
Sam,etc.)mainlybecauseitalleviatesoffensiveplayersresponsibilitiestoknownames.
Theyarejustbodies,accordingtoDrewOwens,offensivecoordinator.
Thesecondleveldefendersarelabeledwiththealphabet,Owenstoldus.OurCorners
arealwaysA.Ifwedrawupanyscheme,itspressA(meaningpresscorner)oroffA(off
corner).Thefirstguyinsideofhimthatsnotathirdleveldefender(highsafety)usuallyat8
yardsinisaB.Ifasafetyrollslate,wecallhimB.BisthefirstguyinsideofA,suchasthe

needawaytoidentifythoseplayers.TheQBmustknowifwerereadingA,BorC.We
dontneedtoknowwhattypeofpositionitis.Everyoneisaletter.Itsaperimeterwayto
identifydefenders.
InWestConnssystem,theletteroftheconceptmatcheswiththereadofthedefender.
So,forexample,theirStickDrawconceptiscalledCobra,whichmeansthequarterbackis
readingtheCdefender.TheyknowthatiftherearethreereceiversitsaCreadandifthere
aretwodefendersitsaBread,Owenstoldus.Thefirstletteroftheconceptmirrorswhich
playertheyarereadingbecausealldefensespushinsideout.

14yardcomebackrouteifheseestwohighsafeties.Hewillconverttoacurlatthesame
depthvs.asinglehighsafety.Thenumbertworeceiverrunsaninsidegoroute,forcingthe
keydefendertomakeadecisionbasedoncoverage.IfhesinkstodisrupttheGO,Stickis
