Initial Sound Sort

Preparation:

Copy one set of pictures and one sorting mat per

student. Do not double side them, as the students will
be cutting out the pictures.

Suggestions for use:

Have students cut out the pictures.

Have students sort the pictures by their beginning
sound. Students can glue down the pictures in the
appropriate columns.
For an extension, students can write the word that is
depicted by the image alongside the picture.
Please note that each sort comes with two
different kinds of sorting mats. The first one
contains all of the letter categories on one page;
however all of the pictures will not fit on this
page. The second version contains each of the
letter categories spread out among 2 pages; all of
the images will fit on these pages making it more
convenient when students are going to be gluing

the images to the page. Please use whichever mat

works best for you and your students.
